How old is Ryu in Breath of Fire?
Breath of Fire II is a fantasy game set 500 years after the events of the original game. The main protagonist, Ryu Bateson, is a 16-year-old boy who finds himself alone in the world after his father and sister disappear and townspeople forget who he is. Ryu is a member of the Dragon Clan, which allows him to transform into powerful draconic beings with destructive abilities. He makes his way as a “Ranger”, a sword-for-hire, alongside his friend Bow, a thief and member of the Woren clan of cat-people.
Throughout the game, players recruit additional characters at different points in the story, including Katt, a member of the Woren clan of cat-people, Rand Marks, Nina Windia, Sten Legacy, Ekkal Hoppa de Pe Jean, Spar, and an optional character in the form of the immortal sorceress Bleu.
The story begins with Ryu, who lives in the village of Gate with his sister Yua and father Ganer, a priest for the Church of St. Eva. Years earlier, Ryu’s mother disappeared when demons erupted from a hole in a mountain on the outskirts of town. After visiting the dragon, Ryu returns to find his family missing and no one remembers who he is. The townsfolk send him to live at the church with Father Hulk, who has seemingly been acting pastor for years.
Ten years later, Ryu and Bow live together in HomeTown as members of a Rangers guild, tasked with finding the lost pet of Mina, princess of the Kingdom of Windia. They reluctantly complete the task, but upon their return, Bow is charged with stealing from Trout, a local rich man. Ryu and Katt escape the town the following night, while Bow remains in hiding.
To gather information, Ryu travels to Coursair, a town with a large coliseum, and becomes a challenger against Katt, the coliseum’s most popular fighter. Ryu gains Katt’s trust by foiling the coliseum manager’s plot to poison her and stage the fight. They allies with Nina, a student of magic and Mina’s older sister, to defeat the gang’s leader, who is also a demon in disguise.
In the port town of Capitan, they encounter Ray, a wandering priest of St. Eva, and assist him in rescuing villagers from Capitan’s dry well. Bow’s hideaway is rebuilt into TownShip, and Ryu meets a Shaman, who taps into his latent ability to transform into a dragon, revealing him to be part of the Dragon Clan thought missing for hundreds of years.
What are Ryu’s abilities in Breath of Fire?
Ryu, the central protagonist of the Breath of Fire series, is a skilled swordfighter and skilled fisherman. He is a member of the Dragon Clan, often one of the few in the modern world. Ryu appears in every game except for Breath of Fire 6, where his younger sibling fills the role. His name is usually customizable by the player, but he is always referred to as Ryu in all Japanese media. Ryu’s name translates to dragon in Japanese, hinting at his Dragon Clan heritage.
The series’ recurring female protagonist, Nina, can be translated as “fire”, meaning “dragon fire”, which was prominently featured in the logo of the first two games. Ryu’s name was undefined in the international SNES version of the first game and in the manual for the SNES version of the second game. When no name is selected when a new game is started, Breath of Fire II defaults to Ryu as a name. He is referred to as “Zack” in the North American GBA release of the first game.

Any character can learn a skill if there is at least one free slot on their Skill List. Skills have different chances of being learned, and Fou-Lu can learn skills from Ryu’s Special list. Master skills can be learned by fulfilling specific requirements for that master.

Ryu, an orphan adopted by Gouken, began training under Ken Masters and eventually became a friend with the Master family. At 23, Gouken believed Ryu had matured enough to travel the world and train independently. Ryu travels to Thailand for Street Fighter 1, where he defeats twenty Muay Thai fighters to attract Sagat’s attention. Ryu barely wins their fight with a Satsui no Hado-infused Shoryuken, scarring Sagat and giving him a grudge against Ryu.
Ryu’s journey continues in Street Fighter Alpha, where he faces M. Bison’s Shadaloo and his struggle with Akuma and the Dark Hado within him. Akuma introduces the concept of the Satsui no Hado, a dark force that takes over when certain fighters are willing to kill their opponents to win. Ryu is troubled by this, but Ken and Sakura help him move on. Bison is interested in the Dark Hado and brainwashes Ryu as a potential new body. After Sagat jolts Ryu back to his senses, he temporarily destroys Bison.
Ryu’s story in Street Fighter 2 is unclear, but it is assumed that Akuma kills Bison in the final round to fight Ryu again. In Street Fighter 4, Ryu struggles most with the Satsui no Hado. He gives in to the Dark Hado and becomes Evil Ryu, needing to be calmed down by his fellow World Warriors. After destroying one of Seth’s clones, he unleashes the Satsui no Hado on the corporation’s BLECE superweapon.

Agni is the most powerful dragon transformation in Breath of Fire, revealing Myria’s true form for the best ending. It grants Ryu 999 HP and a flat 999 damage attack, ignoring potential modifiers. It is considered a fusion spell, leaving only Ryu in battle until the transformation ends. Transforming into Agni requires no stunned party members and Karn not in any of his fusion forms. The ability’s use is not restricted if individuals are outright missing from the party, such as those not yet recruited. This means that the transformation can be used with less than eight party members if the game is glitched or hacked.

I did NOT know that Typhoon had additional effects based on where you were! Also, I loved the old idea of holding down a button to cause a Special damage version of a spell (dunno if it worked but it’s what I did and SEEMED like it worked). Like, Bolt X getting more intro lightning bolts before the BIG one, or Hail not just having the ice wolf, but an entire series of ice puppies afterward. Just to let you know that yeah, that was a Special hit.
I think the retranslation was a commendable effort but he overlooked the fact that those who would be playing are most likely people that were familiar with the original English version. Fixing all of the grammar and spelling mistakes and using truncated names is good. Changing the names of characters and spells not so good. Bow>Bosch and Spar>Aspara was fine but Katt>Lin, Memeko>Honey Babaderlu>Bunyan bother me. Then there are the spells; need to watch this article to know what they even do.
