The heart chakra is often associated with string instruments, which can imitate or extend the human voice. It is the seat of love and is governed by spiritual laws and principles of consciousness. Each of the seven chakras is a center of energy, with the root chakra being the most powerful.
The root chakra’s sound is LAM (pronounced “lah-mmm”), which activates and awakens the root energy center. According to yoga philosophy, the ruler of Muladhara is the root chakra. Chanting the chakra vowel sounds softly and clearly is essential for cultivating greater harmony, happiness, and wellbeing. The final audible syllable is M (pronounced “Mmm”), known as the deep sleep state, and the last two syllables are m-(ng) (pronounced as a prolonged “mmmm” sound).
Chakras are centers of energy, originating from Sanskrit and meaning “wheel”. They are resonating and stimulating three powerful chakras: Muladhara Chakra, the root chakra of the human body, and the Brow Chakra Sound. The Brow Chakra Sound vibrates on the Note of A, with a tone of MM, representing ultimate reality consciousness.
To strengthen your chakras with sound, explore using mantras, bija seed syllables, vowels, and mantras. The fifth chakra, which is located at the throat and has sixteen petals, is blue and has sixteen petals. Repeat this vowel spiral at least three times, ending with Ahh at the Heart, to notice how it resonates within your body.

Wonderful! YES, yes. I like how you step-by-step uncover the practice of AUM. I find myself making a bit of tweak…in my experience, MMM (hum) is primary. I enjoy feeling the power of The Great Mother, when beginning with MMM, opening to Ah (MA) and flow back to MMM. In this way, I feel MA at head chakras, flowing AH down and back again. I understand this way may be incorrect. But still, it will not stop me from following my natural heart.
This was exactly what I have been looking for and that is the explanation and why we do it to activate chakras, it makes so much sense and I am truly grateful that you shared your knowledge. Can you explain why Yoga, and other similar modalities are activating in our bodies and how they help the flow of energy through our bodies. I am so grateful to come across this although it was from 3 years ago. ❤❤❤
Have been chanting on and off for a number of years and I have been missing the first part of the chant just doing om. It really make much more sense to me now having watch this article. When I do the first part I can feel it in my stomach, first chakra. I am focused on it moving up through my chakras. I didn’t even realize that this was what it was about, like that it was meant to stimulate the chakras. Thank you so much. X
Thank you very much for teaching us the correct way to chant Om. I’am a westerner and although I’ve been chanting Om everyday for years, you have shown me that I have been doing it upside down. I didn’t know that I needed to first concentrate at my lower chakras and end at my crown chakra. It’s a lot more powerful doing it your way. Om!
Very informative. Yogi for 20+ years, however, have lived in an apt with thin walls so have never given voice to the chant, just done it in my head. Currently, don’t have neighbors so have attempted this. Have respiratory issues which prevent really deep inhalation but doing best I can. Need lots of practice. Thanks for this very beneficial demonstration!
Very nice explanation. May I add a point here please. The three sounds are to be of equal length because they represent wealth/prosperity (AA…), wisdom (woo…) and energy/ power (mmm…). We need to have these three in equal measure to have a balanced life. There is a fourth part as well, which is silence of equal length too..
It’s such an important part of Yoga and at the same time so hard to find a good explanation. Thank you for putting such a good energy in this article, I had the feeling to be with you in the room. I have finally felt something was happening in my body, and I felt why it was good to do it several times, thank you so, so much <3 I send you peace wherever you are 🌸
