Which Magic Bands Are Special Effects Capable Of?

MagicBands are a type of plastic RFID bracelet used by guests at Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort. They come in various types, including park-specific bands like the Magic Kingdom 45th Anniversary MagicBands, which have special effects at both entry and FastPass+ touchpoints, and resort-wide bands like the Moana MagicBand, which only have special effects at entry points.

Limited Edition MagicBands, such as the Black Panther and 2018 Valentine’s Day MagicBands, offer unique special effects at entry touchpoints. These bands use short- and long-range RFID technology to make visits to Disney World more convenient and exciting. Some limited edition MagicBands also create special effects at tapstiles, such as changing colors or playing specific sounds.

MagicBand+ allows guests to engage in Disney experiences like never before by reacting to select park interactions with lighting effects and gesture recognition. This design features an additional feature that allows guests to become bounty hunters in Star Wars: Galaxy’s.

In general, all MagicBands make normal green lights with sounds at touch points, but limited edition bands can make special effects randomly at certain touch points throughout Disney. A MagicBand+ comes alive with color-changing lights, haptic vibrations, and gesture recognition, enabling “magical surprises” in the parks.

Did you know that Limited Edition magic bands, aka the ones sold in the boxes, make special effects at the touch points? Here’s a …

Do limited release MagicBands have special effects?

Touchpoints, a ring with an outline of Mickey Mouse’s head, are located at park entry points, Lightning Lane entry points, PhotoPass locations, and point of sales locations. When a guest walks up to one, they place their MagicBand’s circuitry location against the center of the ring to engage the system. The ring and outline light up green if access is granted, and blue if cast member assistance is required. Some special edition MagicBands with graphics printed on them cause the touchpoints to light up different colors and make different noises instead of the default green.

Handheld MagicBand readers are used at sit-down restaurants for point of sales and by PhotoPass photographers to link photos. These handheld readers do not have the light-up features of the touchpoints. The MagicBands are also used to connect guests’ on-ride photos to their PhotoPass using the long-range ultra-high frequency radio without guests having to use touchpoints to associate the pictures to their account.

The MagicBands also allow guests to interact using a system called Storymaker with screens in rides or queues, such as It’s a Small World, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster starring Aerosmith, Haunted Mansion, and Expedition Everest.

Can I still use my old MagicBand?

Guests can reuse their Disney band from a previous visit at Walt Disney World, but the ability to receive Disney PhotoPass attraction videos and select photos may be limited. Disney bands are not available for purchase before arrival, but guests can purchase them from their Disney Resort Hotel or World of Disney. They come in limited-edition and custom designs. Guests without a Disney band do not need to visit the Front Desk upon arrival to their Disney Resort hotel.

Instead, they can use the Online Check-In/Direct-to-Room service through the My Disney Experience App for a seamless experience. The app allows guests to sign up for room ready notifications, use the app as a digital room key, and access features like park entry and charging purchases to a resort room.

Are Disney MagicBands being discontinued?

The first version of MagicBands, the MagicBand2, was discontinued and no longer available. The MagicBand+, which is now the most readily available, can be found in limited quantities on shopDisney. com, My Disney Experience, and stores throughout the Walt Disney World Resort. The original MagicBands have lost their functionality as they are about 10 years old or older. The MagicBand2 batteries last up to two years, with some guests reporting longer life. The MagicBand+ is rechargeable, which is a welcome update to the MagicBand family. To find older-style MagicBands, consider using a popular online auction website.

The MagicBand+ is a waterproof device suitable for use in pools and water rides, making it ideal for theme parks, water parks, and Disney Resorts Collection hotels. The classic MagicBand, also waterproof, comes in various designs and is available in parks, resorts, and on the Disney Store. The main difference between the two models is the rechargeable nature of the MagicBand+, which can be used indefinitely, and the rechargeable nature of the classic MagicBand, which lasts about two to three years.

The MagicBand+ also unlocks special interactive experiences throughout theme parks, such as lighting up and syncing with nighttime shows like Happily Ever After, Fantasmic!, and Luminous The Symphony of Us, making the experience even more immersive.
