Which Schools Use Mustangs As Their Mascot?

Southern Methodist University, California Polytechnic State University, Midwestern State University, Western New Mexico University, and The Master’s University and Seminary are among the colleges and universities that have chosen the Mustang as their mascot. Mustangs are important symbols of school spirit and pride, often used to differentiate one school or sports team from another. The Mustang was first adopted as the official mascot of the school in 1917 by a group of female students on the faculty and students. The official school mascot is a mustang named Gunrock, which dates back to 1921 when the US Army brought a horse named Gun Rock to UC Davis to supply high-quality stock for cavalry horses.

Students line up at their respective colleges and walk to the Spirit of the Mustangs, where they touch the nose of the Senior Mustang to symbolize the end of their undergraduate studies. The live mascot was ceremonially named Chase, after former Cal Poly president Margaret Chase, and served the university, boost school spirit, and provide learning.

Midwestern State University has had its mascot, Peruna IX, since 2006, and Mustang High School, often shortened to MHS, is the only secondary school of the Mustang breed. The Michigan Helmet Project offers an online catalog of images representing helmets worn by Michigan HS football teams. Mustangs are also known for their strength and intelligence, making them a popular choice for schools and sports teams.
