While Not In Use, Should I Switch Off My Magic Mouse?

Magic devices do not stay on when not in use, but rather power down after a period of time. To turn off the Magic Mouse, press a key on the keyboard or mouse button, and it will shut itself off if inactive for a period of minutes, even when the power button is in the “on” position. However, 2 minutes of charge should be enough to use it.

To connect your Magic Mouse to your Mac mini using a cable or Bluetooth, and perform common gestures such as click, scroll, and zoom, you can do so yourself. To reset the mouse, you can do it yourself, but it will switch into low power idle automatically (disconnected).

You cannot charge the Magic Mouse and use it simultaneously. The Lightning port is located on the bottom of the mouse, meaning when you want to charge it, you have to turn it over and plug it. Some people suggest manually turning off the Magic Mouse when the iMac sleeps, while others believe it does not matter.

The Magic Mouse comes with built-in power-saving features that help preserve its battery life. Manually turning off the Magic Mouse using its on/off switch can significantly prolong battery life. When the Magic Mouse won’t be used for lengthy periods, it’s important to save power by switching it off. This habit has been passed down from the battery-power-sucking Mighty Mouse.

It is also possible to turn off the Magic Mouse while charging, but according to Apple, for the fastest battery charging performance, be sure your device is switched on.

  • I just downloaded Mac Monterey on my 2015/2016 mac retina pro and it automatically turned off my trackpad and I don’t have a mouse. That was SO frustrating and so of course I scoured the internet looking for solutions and found nothing valuable UNTIL I saw your article and gave it a try. I am SO GRATEFUL I did. This was easy-to-understand instruction, valuable and actually worked! You saved me time, money and headache. Thank you so very much for sharing your knowledge with us. Thank you!!!

  • Dear Gary. Since I bought my first Mac (Mac mini M1) last December 2020, for the first time I lost my mouse in the configuration. Thanks to this article I was able to use the keyboard and restore my Magic Mouse connection. Your articles are very interesting and helpful and I like how clear you explain the things and how straightforward you are on the topics. Thank you so much for your help.

  • Great article, Gary. This is a good thing for all Mac users to know. That said, as you said at the very end, it’s a good idea to have a spare old keyboard and mouse (or trackpad) around just in case. This is kind of taken care of already if your Mac is in an environment with other Macs; you can borrow a spare easily. Otherwise, keep a spare somewhere – and keep spare batteries around if either of the primary input devices is wireless!

  • I must thank for your information regarding the mouse operating keyboard.Yesterday my keyboard suddenly stopped typing several letters I used Apples help to solve the problem to no avail the first answer was the keyboard broken so I bought a new one at considerable expense this did not solve the problem even with Apples again. I found your article using the keyboard viewer as you describe all the letters are available so I can put in passwords etc.Thank you very much,do have any idea what my problem is please?

  • Thank you soooo much!! None of these worked for me as I turned off my Bluetooth because my airdrop wasn’t working and of course all off a sudden my mouse doesn’t work. YIKES!! BUT, while perusal your article, I thought to take a spare mouse from my laptop (not my Apple mouse) and plugged it into my desktop AND IT WORKED!! So I was able to get my Bluetooth back on!! HOOOOORAY for extra mouses!! Thanks sooo much for posting!!

  • Gary, this article answered a question I have been having, as I try to fix a problem with my iMac. Thank you for producing such excellent tutorial articles about how to use a Mac. I have now watched about 20 of your articles, subscribed, and will continue to watch more to learn more. Your presentations are very good, nicely illustrated, clear in instructions, spoken at a good pace for learners, and helpful. Thanks!

  • I wish I had known this a week ago. On upgrading to Big Sur I found on day 2 that the keyboard didn’t work so I couldn’t sign in. Very frustrating. I tried my 2nd keyboard which was bluetooth but the system change had cancelled the connection. A virtual keyboard would have saved the day, assuming I could have got to system preferences to turn it on. I ended up having to take it to my local service and paid £40 for the privilege of getting up and running again.

  • Oh you absolute LEGEND! Cursor/mouse had been lagging/freezing for a week, then finally decided to stick in the top left corner. I was trying to use recovery to reinstall Monterey (which I wish I’d never upgraded to in the first place) but couldn’t get to the continue button using voiceover. Nowhere I looked talked about mouse buttons! You rock!

  • I have just got my new iMac and have trouble with the mouse. I did what you suggested with the option key but now it seems it won’t turn off? I have managed to get the mouse into the search bar to find where I need to go in accessibility but the keys that I had used for mouse tracking are not recon\\gnised? I try to type short cuts shrt is the best I can do the o is missing?

  • Great tips! I can personally attest to the need for keeping an old USB keyboard hanging around. One time I inadvertently shutdown Bluetooth. Bam! No keyboard / no mouse. I had to borrow my neighbor’s keyboard to restart Bluetooth. Made me wonder after the fact why Apple would even allow me to turn off Bluetooth in the first place.

  • My magic mouse works with my other computers, just not this 2016 iMac that is in Monterey. I stopped using it a while ago when this happened because I couldn’t find a way to make it work. I saw your article then, and put it aside until I had the time. I don’t have the Pointer Control in the left side of System Preferences, and nothing has worked. Any thoughts? Thank you!

  • I need to have my MacbookAir screen at face height but must have the keyboard/trackpad much lower to avoid back and shoulder problems. What’s the best accessory to get to achieve this? I bought a wireless keyboard #ISJ-DJC03 but realized that I dont have the ability to move a cursor around the screen. What’s the right thing to type on that also moves the cursor on the screen? Thanks!

  • I like your articles and I like how you explain things. I would like to know if you found the solution to the Mac’s Bluetooth. I have an Imac and have had connection problems for a week. The mouse and keyboard are disconnected every 5 seconds. I have tried everything that has been published on the Internet but I still have not been able to solve it. Maybe you know how to do it. Regards, and thank you very much.

  • Do you have a solution for the Accessibility option popping every time I try to use the down arrow? Since I pressed every single key you instructed me to (before you said those methods may not work), it just caused all types of issues with my keyboard. Is there any way to reverse it? I can’t even type in the letters I,J,K,M,U,O and I’m sure I’ll find other annoying problems with my keyboard.

  • Gary, quick question… this article is helpful, yet I am missing an explanation; when I use Accessibility for using a keyboard as a mouse, keyboard is not working ( right side with letters I O P JKL…) unless I switch it off. Is there a possibility that this works at the same time? thanks for your articles, I believe that your website is The most valuable website on Youtube.

  • my problem is curser shows and will right click but wont left click with a mouse or using the trackpad,… tried the command shift ? and the help menue came up but was not able to get to system preferences..just help and could not actually click on items in help menu…something weird going on…able to right click and move curser with mouse or trackpad but that’s it……and the fixes you kindly showed do not work either.

  • Off topic but hoping you can help. Hi there. Do you know an easy way to export the titles and perhaps authors from Audible and Apple Books? I have four different accounts with over 600 bucks and was looking for a central place to catalog them. I was thinking excel or notion. I have not found a quicker way to do this other than one at a time with manual entry. Hoping you can help. Thank you for all of the great content! Have a great day.

  • I have a mac mini and I’m trying to re pair my Magic Mouse to the max mini after using it with my iPad Pro. My max mini screen is stuck on the login screen and the Bluetooth menu has popped up. My Magic Mouse is showing up but the max mini has been “attempting to connect with mouse #1” for an hour. I’ve shut down the max mini, unplugged. Tried everything you mentioned in this article and I have no luck. I charged the mouse, and even paired it with the iPad again to make sure it works and is charged. I also disconnected all of my devices from WiFi and Bluetooth . Any idea what I can do? my Magic keyboard doesn’t seem to be connected either .

  • Great info. Thanks for doing this article. Would you by any chance have a user FRIENDLY article on how to reset the Administrator Password on my barely used older iMac running Snow Leopard? It is virtually new with very little usage, and I’d love to get a more recent OS installed. However, it will not accept my password. All articles I have seen require changing code w/Snow Leopard and that is intimidating. The iMac works fine with the software installed, however, I cannot add new software with no password and again I’d like to upgrade to the newest OS that would still be compatible with my older model. Thanks. Philip From NYC area

  • I couldn’t click on my MacBook Pro. I took it to the Genius Bar and he was baffled. I connected a USB mouse with no clicking success either. Apple will declare it obsolete at the end of the month, so I will buy a new one, but I can at least prepare it for recycling. This was the emergency article I desperately needed. Many thanks!

  • Does anyone know how to turn on the ‘Use Keyboard Navigation’ if you don’t have a mouse handy? Ironically you need that option on in order to be able to tab to it to turn it on or off. Bearing that in mind, it seems really stupid to have it off as default, because now I can’t turn it on to be able to tab to where I need to get to, to fix the problem I’m having.

  • I have never had this issue with my iMac Keyboard, but today when I start my Imac, I had to change the batteries, the light of my keyboard it shows that is looking for a connection, and the computer says, “there isn’t a keyboard connected”, all the articles I am seeing solve the issue but they have access to the system, but I can even have access to put my password so I can fix this on the system preferences, any Idea???

  • Hey garry, hope you will read this message because im so pissed of with mac because in windows by pressing control and scroll up or down we can zoom the content zoom in or out but in mac there is a option but it zoom(maginifine) the whole screen which i dint want if you have any solution for it please please reply.

  • Your clip caused my stress levels to go down tremendously, that combination of keys to reach a mouse click was a ton of help. If you can direct me to a clip that will solve another problem with another Mac, and that lock pic with the line support/help/etc…I will donate to you. You will be the first of a donation…I tried everything to unlock it, even called tech, no help, the utility page was showing up sometimes, I took it in to apple, they screwed it up more, now I cannot even get to that page.

  • New to Mac here. I have a no-name Bluetooth mini keyboard, and a Logitech Trackball. No wired keyboard of any kind. I’m trying to do initial startup/setup. When I turn on the Mac with the Unifying receiver for my Trackball, the language menu pops up with a woman’s voice instructing me to press the return button. I restart the Mac after removing the Unifying receiver and putting my mini Bluetooth keyboard into pairing mode. Now the Magic keyboard & Magic mouse prompts are on the screen. Mac isn’t detecting the Bluetooth keyboard. Guess I have to wait for my Magic keyboard to arrive tomorrow to get My M1 Mac Mini up and running.😕

  • SOLVED: If you have a wireless keyboard (iMac Bluetooth keyboard), then connect it to the iMac using your iPhone cable, after your keyboard is working, type command, space and search Siri, then tell Siri to turn on Bluetooth. WALA, solved, you have your iMac mouse and iMac keyboard working normally. TIP: Never turn off Bluetooth on iMac.
