The chanticleer fell out of favor due to its similarities to a chicken, and in 1955, a campus-wide selection process picked a Knight to be the new mascot.
By 1955, the Scarlet Knight had become the official mascot of the school. The Scarlet-garbed knight, riding a spirited white charger, represented a new era at Rutgers University. Being the Scarlet Knight has its perks, such as selfies, high fives, and fist bumps everywhere. Sir Henry, the Scarlet Knight, is seen at all football games, home men’s and women’s basketball games, tournaments, bowl games, and numerous sporting events.
The color of Scarlet originated when it was proposed as the new mascot for Rutgers University. The Rutgers-Newark campus mascot, a fox named Scarlet Raider, has gotten a new look, but the transformation won’t be complete until students wear the Scarlet Knight Stone Mascot Collegiate Legacy Statue.
