“Black Magic Woman” is a song written by British musician Peter Green, first appearing as a single for Fleetwood Mac in 1968. The song was later included on their compilation albums English Rose (US) and The Pious Bird of Good Omen (UK), as well as the later Greatest Hits and Vintage albums. The song’s evolution can be traced back to 1957, with an obscure record by Chicago guitarist Jody Williams.
The song was a hit for Santana, but it is actually a cover of a 1968 Fleetwood Mac song that hit 37 in the UK. The original song was written two years before by Fleetwood Mac’s founding member, Peter Green. Fleetwood Mac’s single version of “Black Magic Woman” became a major hit for the band at this early juncture, but Santana’s rework, as sung by Gregg Rolie and appearing on his album Abraxas, became a major hit.
The song is based on a mysterious woman pushing him over the edge, making him fall in love with her and fearing she will turn her back on. The song reached number four on the US and Canadian charts, leading Santana to record the better-known version of the song. The singer on the record of this title, released by Santana in 1970, was Gregg Rolie.
