The 82nd annual Magic City Classic, the largest historically black college and university (HBCU) football game in the country, took place at Legion Field in Birmingham. Alabama A and M and Alabama State played in the matchup, with the Bulldogs of Alabama A and M looking to reclaim their title after the Hornets defeated them. Alabama State managed to snap a three-game losing streak by winning the game 42-28.
The Bulldogs used key plays in the first half and the beginning of the second half to pull away from Alabama A and M. Davis hit Kisean Johnson from nine yards out, and Jacory Merritt scored on a four-yard run to give Alabama State a 17-14 lead. Victor Barbosa kicked a 37-yard field goal.
Alabama State and Alabama A and M battled in a competitive first half, but the Hornets pulled away in the second half to take the 31-16 victory. The Alabama A and M Bulldogs now lead the series with a record of 44–41–3 all-time.
In 2022, Alabama State University won 24-17, while in 2021, Alabama A and M won 42–28. The Alabama State University football team capitalized off big plays, scoring off a punt return, blocked field goal, and a Hail Mary, as the Hornets won their 2021 Magic City Classic. Each school took home a payout of $739,575.
