Solar geoengineering, a technology that involves blocking the sun’s energy, is not an attempt to “block out the sun”. Instead, it is a riff on a naturally occurring process where about 30 percent of the sun’s energy is reflected back into space by clouds and ice. The Natural Resources Defense Council, an environmental nonprofit group, states that about 30 percent of the sun’s energy is already reflected back into space by clouds and ice.
The claim that a nine-day winter stretch of overcast skies could be evidence of a widespread government plot to block out the sun and poison people while mitigating climate change is inaccurate. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) proposed a space-based solar geoengineering study in 2022 as a compromise that would be safer for Earth. A YouTube video suggests that vapour trails in the sky are evidence of “global elites” attempting to “block out the sun”, but they are actually contrails caused by the sun.
Republican lawmakers introduced a bill to ban solar geoengineering, putting aerosols into the atmosphere to block some of the radiation from the sun. However, this claim was largely false and has been previously debunked. Solar radiation management (SRM) is the most intensely planet-altering form of a broader set of unproven tools that fall under the banner of SRM.
In an influential cli-fi novel, a desperate government pumps aerosols into the atmosphere to cool the earth by reflecting sunlight back into space. People with a deep distrust of government want to preemptively ban the use of aerosols to reduce heat from the sun. The bill would prohibit technologies that could modify the atmosphere, but lawmakers’ comments about it toed a line between fact and fiction.
