This issue is usually caused by recording a mono source (one mic or one guitar) onto a stereo audio track. To avoid this, ensure that when adding an audio track to your DAW, you set it so that the input is mono. Scarlett mixers seem to only send left channel audio when running stereo. The fast and easy fix is to down sample your mics audio track to mono in SLOBS.
One day, I suddenly only heard out of the left side, and I have not been able to fix it since. I’ve tried setting the recording to mono, but nothing changed. I’ve tried setting the recording to mono in both FL and FL.
When you record within your chosen recording software (DAW), you may hear the recorded audio through only your left or right headphone/speaker. A common question is “How do I get my mic/guitar?” The Focusrite requires consistency in USB connection. You have to manage devices in Windows and change all USB hub settings for power to always on.
In this video, the author teaches how to fix audio issues using Focusr. They mention that audio is only coming in on the left, in FL, Windows Media Player, and Youtube. It’s normal on Focusrite almost all audio interfaces. You only have one mic plugged in, so it records as mono on the left channel.
A workaround is using a different recording application (such as GarageBand) which will let you select a mono input (rather than stereo). The issue is not just an issue within the Focusrite 2i2 headphones.

Why can I only hear one side of my Focusrite?
To prevent the inadvertent recording of a monaural source onto a stereo audio track, it is necessary to set the input of the audio track to mono when it is added to the digital audio workstation (DAW). Some digital audio workstations (DAWs) permit this action to be carried out when a new track is created, whereas others necessitate that the input be configured subsequent to the addition of the track.
In some common digital audio workstations (DAWs), the user should select the input that the microphone or guitar is connected to and ensure that the icon displays a single circle, indicating that the input is mono.
Why is my recording only on one side?
To circumvent potential audio complications when capturing audio in a stereo format, it is imperative to ensure that the input to your track is configured to “Mono” and that your input number is set to “1,” or the corresponding value you are utilizing. This will correctly position the input at the center of the stereo output, thereby ensuring that the audio is played to both sides. This will prevent the occurrence of audio output on a single side when recording in stereo.
Why is audio only playing on left side?
Stereo listening to a single-channel sound source may be attributed to one of three potential causes: a fault with the laptop or the jack socket, a fault with the jack plug on the headphones, or a faulty cable connecting the laptop to the headphones.
How do I reset my Focusrite audio interface?
Once restarted, close all other apps and leave open Focusrite Control only. Click ‘File’ >’Restore Factory Defaults’ >OK – this will reset the interface to factory settings. If prompted to choose a Preset, click off that window instead.
- Reset the interface every session to cancel any previous routings.
- Check the 3 green lights are on when your laptop is plugged into the interface. If the USB light isn’t on, chances are you’ve got the wrong USB cable plugged in.
- Ensure the yellow speaker cables are plugged into LINE OUTPUTS 1-2 at the back of the interface. If they’re in LINE OUTPUTS 3-4 (easily done) then the interface ignores the master volume control and sends out audio at max gain, bad for ears and gear!
- You can watch a Focusrite Control 1-minute quick tour here.
If you open Focusrite Control and it shows No Hardware Detected please read this guide. If all of the above doesn’t help, please double-check all steps shown in this guide.

Why is audio only playing in one ear?
To ensure proper audio quality, check the audio settings on your smartphone or computer and ensure the stereo balance is centered in the center. If using an external audio device, ensure the balance is in the center. Stereo sound transmits different sounds to left and right speakers, so check if the device has the option to switch between stereo and mono sound. If using wireless Bluetooth headphones, unpair them by turning off Bluetooth, then reconnect them and see if the issue is resolved. It’s also important to ensure that the headphones are in stereo mode, not mono mode, when using wireless Bluetooth headphones.
Why is my audio only in one ear?
If you notice one side of wired earphones being silent, ensure they are connected properly and snap all the way in. If using a smartphone or computer, check the audio settings in the Settings menu to ensure the stereo balance is panned in the center. If using an external audio device, check the balance on the device itself. Stereo sound transmits different sounds to left and right speakers, so check if the device has the option to switch between stereo and mono sound and ensure you are in stereo mode. This will help ensure that the issue is resolved.

Why is only one side of my record working?
Should one be unable to discern the audio from either the left or right channel of their records, this may be attributed to either a loose connection or an unbalanced cartridge. The left and right channels are located on the sides of the grooves. In the event that the stylus is unable to track correctly, it may fail to register one side entirely.

How do you reset the audio system?
To reset an audio component, disconnect it from the power source, wait 30 seconds, and then plug it back in. This is crucial because most electronic technology contains capacitors, which hold a reserve of energy while plugged in. The power-indicator LED on the front panel can take up to ten seconds to fade away, so it’s essential to wait long enough to ensure the device is truly powered down to correct the problem.

Scarlett Solo 4th Gen We’ve added a setting to the Scarlett Solo 4th Gen which combines both input websites to allow applications that can usually only receive one input to receive both inputs (line/inst and mic). Some apps have a limitation which means they only accept the first input from audio interfaces. On the Scarlett Solo 4th gen, the microphone connects to Input 2; some customers have reported that they’re not able to use their mic with these apps. To enable this feature in Focusrite Control 2: Open Preferences in Focusrite Control 2. Enable the tick box next to Combine Input 1 and Input 2. Or to enable it via the hardware: Press and hold the front panel ‘Direct’ button for three seconds.
If anyone can’t find the settings due to Windows being annoying, I think I found where you can change the format of the Interface. It worked for me on Windows 10. 1. Go to your bottom right speaker on the desktop and right click on it. 2. Click on Sounds. 3. A small window should open. After it has opened click on Recording in the top left. 4. Right click on your Interface, which should be located in the list. 5. Select Properties. 6. Click on Advanced, which is located in the top row. 7. Change the Default Format to the setting you want. This fixed things for me and I hope it will do the same for you!
Having a different issue, i don’t know if you can help😪 i usually record my vocals and they sound decent. Today i replugged my scarlett 2i2, started recording some vocals, while recording they sound amazing, when i wanna play them back they sound muffled and far and just weird. This never happened to me before. i just can’t seem to find the solution. Thank you anyway ❤
this may not work. (For me Windows 10 home) selecting 1 website in my sound settings kept my audio recording software CS6 and Audio Director 365 from hearing the microphone. Open your Focusrite Scarlet controller software and in preferences select “combine input 1 and input 2” Note: if you are recording two separate websites in a DAW you’ll need to change it back obviously.
Mainly I’ve got the Focusrite scarlet audio interface for a zoom class I am in. So this will help for that when I am using the solo 2 version? My other question is when I have my headphones plugged into the audio interface and I’m using it with my keyboard to transcribe tunes that I’m listening to on youtube….how do I make it so that I can’t hear my keyboard on the outside and only through my headphones? Right now I can hear it on the headphones and on the outside too. I only want to hear the sound coming from the headphones as well as hear the article through my headphones. Thank you!
I am using Cubase and this did not fix my problem. I only have sound from my Neumann U87 on the left ear. Any suggestions? So weird problem. Makes no sense to me. In advance thanks for reading my comment. Hopefully, someone can gujide me to solve the problem. In the meantime, I keep on troubleshooting and research this epic issue. TC
Just picked up the solo gen4, by default, it was detected in windows, and only recording right side. after installing the software it changed the mic input to “analogue 1+2” and has combined both websites.. in 2 website mode, it only records the right side, in 1 website mode, it doesn’t pick up the XLR mic at all!! wtf is wrong with focusrite. WHY would they force combine the front and rear inputs into one website.
Had this issue but with live output from a dynamic mic only playing out of one side. The mono 6.5mm mic jack plug has only the tip and sleeve with no ring so even if your input socket is “stereo” the physical layer cannot put any signal into the right website as you’d need to feed the tip and not the sleeve (common) into the right website where the ring would normally be. In the particular instance the twin speaker cabinet is setup to take a stereo input @ 8 Ohms being driven by a 25+25W amp. While it is possible to bridge the speakers to either 4 or 16 ohms, that would cut out one side of the amp and either load up the one remaining side or reduce the output and also lose any minor stereo separation that the cabinet can produce, it’s a much better solution to simply get signal to both websites. The quick and dirty workaround was simply to take the tip and split it to a L/R output direct via a homespun splitter box but this somehow seems suboptimal as you’re effectively halving the impedance ratio and thus creating a higher load on the mic. While it worked in practice and is a nice simple passive solution, it would seem to me that to do it right would require some kind of additional impedance probably resistive in the splitter box to correct the output to input ratio, particularly if you are feeding into various preamps with various input impedances. Same thing if splitting after preamplification, you’d still be changing the impedance ratio and while it probably isn’t a big issue with 20:1 or higher ratio’s it could be a problem when dealing with 10:1 or lower ratio’s.
This used to be a very common problem for neophyte contributors on Youtube. Many didn’t know they were posting articles with sound coming through to only one ear. Very annoying! I discovered that if I would pull my 3.5mm headphone jack out a millimeter or two, suddenly the audio comes through to both headset speakers. I wanted to help those people, but not knowing what hardware they were using was a problem. All were posting from the mic built into a low level camcorder, as far as I know.
This didn’t solve my problem, but helped me understand what was going on, and eventually I found the solution. It was really silly, on audio->device, my 2 output websites were all set to website 1, so it’s no wonder how I could just hear through the left side of my headphones only, I wasn’t using the second website! In the end, this article still helped me, so thank you! PD: I use Reaper, so maybe it varies a bit in other DAWs.
Hi, I’m having this exact issue with using an M-Track duo connected to my phone through a USB -C hub. I’ve had to export thr audio from the footage in my camera roll, send it to my PC, use audacity to convert separate the stereo track, delete the empty track, duplicate the track with the audio, combine them as stereo, then send back to my iPhone to sync back up with the footage. Do you know how I can skip all this? If I get a single input interface, will it record the mic onto left and right, or will it do the same? Alternatively, maybe there is a conversion app or DAW that will allow me to do everything on my iPhone rather than sending it to my pc to use Audacity. I’d appreciate any insights you may have.
To fix this for your pc camera/voice recording, right click on your speaker symbol in the task bar, go to sounds, then go to recording, right click on your audio interface (for example Analogue 1+2 Focusrite USB Audio), click on properties, go to levels, click on balance, and turn off level 2 (or whichever isn’t in use).
So I have a LG already built-in amplifier subwoofer speaker set but also bought some rocket monitor speakers with their own amplifier wired them to my LG but I had to get a balance converter to make it happen. The problem is when I cut it up too loud my speakers and go out until I cut it back down now the converter seems to be blown. What can I do to fix this issue?
Is there anything that can be done with smartphones? I have honestly wondered how some streamers are able to use their smartphone for things like tick, tock live streams or whatever while using their microphones. Same with mine. I want to be able to record articles of myself while practicing doing voice over but it gets stuck in the left website and I haven’t figured out how to fix it on my phone. I can only get it to work on my computer because of the more advanced software capabilities
Question: When I go live on Facebook or when I record in Quicktime the sound always comes out the left side. I understand how you just told us to fix the issue by changing to a mono setup however how do I make it mono when I when I am recording to Facebook Live or when I am recording in Quicktime on my Mac? Facebook doesnt give you the option of a mono setup nor does QuickTime. So how do I get it to come out on the right and left side if I dont get the option of choosing a mono setup?
Good Evening. I have been facing the following problem for a few days now. For the recordings of the guitar I use the Reaper but the sound is heard only from one monitor, ie track and guitar as I play from a speaker. The paradox is that on YouTube or any other media player both monitors are heard only when I open Reaper it becomes monophonic. Obviously he wants some adjustment, I have searched, I have broken my head but I have not found anything. I use an audio interface the Behringer umc 204HD and the driver I downloaded for this particular card was the Behringer 4.59, does he want another driver? Anyone who knows something please welcome help. Thank you!
SUPER helpful! I have a Senn MKE600 that I love but it’s mono. My Sony A7 R4 only has a stereo jack for the mic. I could not find a cable, that would record both websites directly into the camera so I made one. It only cost me $11. Works well, saves a little time in post… youtu.be/ESDEeFpE81E
