It is difficult to say this but although there are many talented and interesting people in Film and Music industry at present and near past there is no one who stands out or will stand out in that Unique and Singular way like Doris Day or those of her time. One or two notes and one knows who is singing. I cannot say that of any singer of the present or last generation, and I do know music and acting. Thank you for this and Thank you Doris for all the pleasure and joy.
I am one of the lucky ones to receive an autographed picture of her made out to me, and a beautiful letter thanking me for the gift I sent her for her 96th birthday. I wrote a story about her and I and how we went on a Sentimental Journey. That was the name of her first hit. In the story, as part of the sentence structure, I incorporated 150 of her song titles. She couldn’t imagine how long it took me to do it. I cherish both the picture and the letter, I loved her my whole life, and still do.

It is truly rare, in my experience, to find someone as beautiful with an unbelievable voice as well. My father was a big fan of Doris, in fact the first song I can remember hearing was it’s magic. Here we are, 68 years later, and I love her with all my heart. Love you, Doris, you will forever be the greatest!!

Her voice is instantly recognized – that uniquee sound – classy – passionate – the best! She probably was one of the most unassuming actress in Hollywood. Made bad choices in husbands – but when you fall in love you don’t see with clear eyes. I am 84 and have seen all her movies and have sheet music (I play the piano) for so many of her songs. Doris Day. I fell in love with her voice at the age of six or seven as a child living on Oahu. Doris was really the first woman I ever had a crush on. I’ve long had the utmost respect for her as a woman, a singer and actress, and, above all, as a truly superb example of humanity. Doris Day made our world a better place. Just saw the Movie… Romance on the High Seas..with Doris Day…saw her singing this song I just fell in love with this sweet romantic song. I had to come here to find it and hear it again..Now it’s one of my favorite songs of the past.. Doris has the most beautiful voice I’ve ever heard. Being the romantic that I am this song sent me over the moon. I’ll be coming to YouTube often to hear it.
Even as a little girl, I fell in love with the powerful singing voice of Doris Day! I’m saddened to learn her time had come to say goodbye, though she was gifted the richness of living into her 90s. Doris is just exceptional. Not only she had this superb technique and this incredibly beautiful, rich, pitch-perfect instrument, but she was also always emotionally connected to what she was saying. I mean, you just feel you’re the one shes talking to, you’re the one she loves and you just cant help and love her in return. I really like this version better than her earlier million seller. I was born in 53 – so I was a little kid in the 50’s – it was a great time to grow up ! This is not the original single which proved a gigantic #1 hit worldwide but a re-recording she did when Columbia was planning a greatest hits album. She loved working with Paul Weston and in fact her best work was her “Day by Night” album with him. There was a third recording of the song done for the soundtrack for the film it came from, “Romance on the High Seas.” Doris was known for her remarkable recording technique. She always came prepared, knew the songs and could do a perfect performance in one take. I have a lot of her Columbia outtakes and they are as a flawless as the takes which were used. She did “Secret Love” in one take, bicycling in from her home, doing the song once and being told she never could improve on what she had done because it was perfect. She got back on her bike and went home.
She is white & had it all. Nevertheless she was not, due to her sugary stardom in Hollywood, respected as one of the greatest American singers, on the level of the of such dames as Billie Holiday, Ella, et al.
