I watched the Leah rimini Scientology documentary series and as a Jehovah’s witnesses was surprised to see how eerily similar we were. The shunning especially, heartbreaking what control the shunning policy exercises over People and how it breaks Families apart. Part of being and leaving a cult is also having to admit to yourself that you were wrong. Especially when you were taught to think you were the one and only to have the “truth”. But all these cults think that. And then to admit “it was a lie”. Wow hard pill to swallow.
I had a friend who fell in with a guy who was selling supplements. Within 2 weeks of meeting her, he was living at her house and setting up “parties” to introduce his product line. I was skeptical, but went to one of the parties. After his presentation—which seem innocuous enough—I innocently asked him how he got interested in health and wellness. Most people love to talk about themselves and their interests, but this guy immediately got defensive and angry. He shot back at me, “what do you mean, how did I get into this??” and walked away. It was so bizarre that I knew for sure he was deliberately scamming her. Healthy, on-the-level people don’t need to lie and exaggerate. They don’t mind answering followup questions and will readily share specific data or sources of information that help prove their position. Normal, innocent people want to have their day in court to justify their innocence. Healthy people will gladly state their goals and preferences because they want to be understood. When someone doesn’t do these, or starts talking fast, bouncing between points, changing the subject… then DO NOT trust them.
As a kid raised in evanglicalism, leaving church at a young age and then leaving the faith shattered my entire world, but I feel like I saved the most vital parts of myself and my identity. I recognize all these tactics and affirm all the solutions to brainwashing. I began to suspect those who told me not to listen to the critics because they were agents of Satan, and got curious as to people who had left the church. Above all, being curious, asking “What ifs” is what saved me. I stayed curious about the world and people different from me, which made me more open to learning and resistant to fear. When you have insatiable curiosity you find fear less appealing and it becomes less effective. Curiosity is an underrated virtue.
I was a career soldier born into the US Army by my father, a career soldier. I have traveled twice around the world, speak French and German and bits of other languages. The USA, in my experience, has the strongest and most effective propaganda and indoctrination program in existence since the rise of Naziism in the 1930s. No cult has 6000 nuclear weapons to guard and forward their insignificant, on a relative scale, agendas. They affect a few thousand lives as the most. We, the American nation and cult ure (cult ure intentional) have destroyed nations, destroyed cultures, and profited grossly in the name of righteousness. Little is more effective at swaying one’s opinion than a gun against the temple. It would be OK if the result wasn’t rising inequality, pointless wars, and rising global violence. The excess is visible. Obesity, a home filled with useless objects, and declining satisfaction and happiness regardless of all that came with the American birthright.
This is important work; but like many time misses discussing the complexity of children born into cults. Imagine if all the social forces in your life were trying to keep you in the cult? Imagine if you didn’t have a pre-identity but all you knew was being mind-controlled and coerced. Imagine if you had no money, resources, connections, education, and had been abuse from birth. Imagine if you had significant mental and physical health issues and even disabilities due to being trafficked, and medical neglect. How easy would it be to “think for yourself” and leave the abusive community?
I can answer that question about how do you know if you are brainwashed? You don’t question authority, allegiance to blind obedience, end all critical thinking, believe the leader at the top cares about you, advocate your conscience and free will, even if it means take poison. The enemy are always those that resist of course.

Also, I appreciate it all the more that Steve correctly condemned authoritarian political cults, in addition to pseudo-religious cults and other cults. I have thankfully never been part of a cult, I have a lifelong disgust of all cults and I have the deepest sympathies for those they abuse and manipulate. I understand many former victims of cults, likely Steve included, might not find it easy to talk about their experience, either out of embarassment (“How did they trick me ?”) or out of fear (direct threats and harassment by cultists), but it’s all the more important they talk about this, and society be supportive of those who tell the truth about cults and the danger they pose to individuals and all of society.
A source does not have to lie to brainwash. The information given can be completely true but partial. This is the primary type that I have trouble with. It is impossible to disprove and perspective cannot be gained unless it is researched independently. If a nonbias or alternative perspective is not given within the first page of a Google search, people who are not knowledgeable will accept and often defend perspectives they should not. Critical thinking has become rare. Other popular types are authoritative and Group /identity conformity. Combine these and it is likely to succeed for the majority.

Everyone on the planet were given the opportunity to witness or participate in Global Mass Formation Psychosis about four years ago. I did my best to inform those in my circle of what was actually happening without alienating friends and relatives. I discovered that propaganda was not so much about individual brainwashing, but more about the peer pressure of not following along with the herd (to the slaughter).
One tactic that I’ve seen these mind controllers or cults use is massage. I believe that these covert hypnotic scripts are induced into the person is by getting them extremely relaxed with light touch massage. They will often run their knuckles up and down your spine which will create a state of complete bliss, relaxation, and trance. This is called the “autonomous sensory meridian response.” I had this happen many times, just before strange or weird events would happen. Often I would experience things such as “street theatre.” It was like I was being led by hypnosis or some sort of mind control to see this street theatre, but I could not understand what I was supposed to get from seeing this nonsense. I would be very cautious about letting somebody do this. This seems to open up your brain in a way so it can be exploited.
But unfortunately, perception is reality. Imagine confronting someone -who you are convinced of being brainwashed, but multiplied by the complexity of them, having the same opinion of you… there are so many angles one could take, for example – the power trip you must feel when you keep getting degrees in things that are ultimately nonsense, changing nothing other than your own inflated self ego, speaking from “authority” and superiority to others. Most places to live it’s not popular. However in Utah / Idaho where I live 1. people go for ‘social’ reasons. 2. Born into it and expected because that’s just what their parents, grandparents did. So there is social pressure. 3. Advantageous socially in business to get connections. 4. There are culture things that are not actually part of the “gospel” or God’s teachings. 5. People will even ‘pretend’ to be someone, that they are not??? For what purpose! I experienced married to someone living a double life for 8 years, and it was very bad. 6. But you also go because you love the gospel. There are those who do. ❤ You will get the full gamut anywhere. So Yes a lot of people issues… But it’s not why I joined. I did not join “The People” I joined Gods Church. And though people continue to disappoint, and I may continue to become more of a hermit from these hurts. There are good Christian people that believe in God and Jesus that are part of this church, along with those that are pretending, or just lazy, or in between or straight out bad. So because of the bad behavior of those do we discard those good ones? Bad people belonging to a religion does not make a religion bad. It makes the person bad. I was sent to a Mormon boarding school where I endured spitting kicking being locked in closet without food and burned with cigarettes for not conforming. I don’t really have a mental illness. My mum just snapped and tried to kill me and had me locked in a psych unit at 18 because I had chronic fatigue syndrome from drinking unsafe water. She didn’t like that I couldn’t move out of bed for 6 weeks in her house (2.5 years of sleep in total). The medication made me hallucinate, I was homeless and she’d swapped my medication for fake medication.

So, you feel hopeless, angry, disorganized and not making connections with the majority who agree with you on important issues. It is divide and conquer. I was pleasantly surprised by the “live and let live” attitude that most of the respondents showed. I expected a lot of them to say that other religions should be illegal, and really none of them said that. Most of them started out sounding pretty dogmatic, but when pressed they acknowledged that people of other religions have the right to their own beliefs.

They are tolerant of other religions, and they actually understand that Christianity, Judaism, and Islam believe in the same one God. Muslims think of Jesus as a prophet. The people who were actually asked about this (only a couple were) didn’t care and were accepting of it. As a professor of Literature and Social Bias, I have to call out this interviewer for his ignorance. Yes, the Founding Fathers were Deists, but that doesn’t mean that they weren’t religious, or would not have described themselves as Christians. They did. Deists believe in the same God, but that God isn’t involved in people’s daily lives. They believed in a “Spectator God, ” meaning that God created the world, gave humanity free will, and then set the world in motion, and is just observing it. They compared God to a watchmaker who created a beautiful watch, wound it up to start ticking, and is now just perusal his creation. They believed that the proof of God and God’s divinity can be seen in nature and in people, and that Evil, too, can be seen in people. Their beliefs do structure the Constitution quite a bit, and they all also wrote a significant number of works that discuss all this. In all their writings, including the Constitution and The Bill of Rights, they make a lot of references to God, and God-given human rights.

Studies show that less than 5 percent of Americans actually attend church regularly. I can’t even begin to explain how furious is makes me that people say my religion states we cant kill kids, but instead of enforcing better gun laws, we let kids who have been born, who have grown for some years, and who were in school be mowed down and forgotten within weeks of a shooting.
