Are Birthday Candles Suitable For Spells?

Birthday candles are a versatile and inexpensive tool for spellwork and witchcraft. They can be used in various ways, such as making wishes, lighting up cakes or pie, singing a song to raise energy, and blowing them out. Candle magick is one of the simplest forms of spellcraft, allowing anyone with a candle and a lit match to perform it.

Birthday candles are ideal for candle magic, as they are small, convenient, and come in many colors. They can be used in spells, rituals, placed on altars, or even put on birthday cakes. Fire, color, scent, and botanicals all work together in candle magick to connect the intentions.

Chime/spell candles, also known as bell candles, burn in about an hour. Birthday candles can be used as a cheap, quick-burning substitute for bell candles. To cast a spell from A-Z using candle magic, follow these basic steps:

  1. Choose your candle. Birthday candles are available at many places, such as supermarkets, baking supply shops, and market stalls, for a lower price than at pagan shops. They are great for performing spells and rituals, as well as for other purposes like tea lights, tapers, and jars.

  2. Set your intention. Birthday candles can represent a special number for your spell, such as three candles to represent the number of years in a person’s life.

  3. Use the herbal blend to dress additional candles, add the herbal blend to a foot soak or bath, or carry the herbal blend in a sachet.

  4. Avoid blowing out your candle like you do birthday candles. Instead, use a budget-friendly candle that can be used for witchcraft purposes.

In conclusion, birthday candles are a versatile and cost-effective tool for spellwork and witchcraft. They can be used in various ways, including making wishes, lighting up cakes or pie, and setting intentions.

Cakes were common birthday celebratory foods in Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome, with circle cakes made from flour, nuts, leavened yeast, and honey. Ancient Greece celebrated birthdays with moon-shaped cakes on the sixth day of every lunar year, offering them up for Artemis, the goddess of the moon. Candles represented the moon’s shine and were considered the first “birthday candles”. Birthday cakes evolved over time, with German bakeries starting to sell sweet cakes for birthday parties of young children in the early 1400s. By the 1700s, German children were greeted with a cake with candles, multiple layers of cake, icing, and decorations. Granulated and confectioner’s sugars were commonly used to create these cakes, with candles representing hope for another healthy year. In 1881, the first account of blowing out candles in Switzerland was recorded, with each candle representing a year of life.

Trick candles, also known as magic candles, are novelty candles that can relight themselves by igniting magnesium inserted into the wick. This allows the paraffin vapor from a blown out candle to ignite itself. However, they were banned in Canada in 1977 due to potential fire risks. Consumers may throw these candles into the trash, believing they have been extinguished, only for them to relight. The National Candle Association recommends immersing the candles in water before discarding them. Trick candles are not safe to use outside of Canada, and they pose a significant health risk. To avoid this, consumers should be cautious when using them and avoid using them in public places.

How do magic birthday candles work?

Trick candles are a type of candle that use magnesium powder, a highly reactive metal, to ignite at temperatures as low as 800 ºF (430 ºC). When the flame is blown out, the hot embers from the wick ignite the magnesium powder, producing tiny sparks that ignite vaporized paraffin hydrocarbons, which relight the wick. The magnesium found lower down in the wick doesn’t burn because it is protected by paraffin.

Trick candles are simple to make, with video instructions available on YouTube. However, experts caution that the simple fun of these candles belies the potential fire hazard. Barbara Miller, a spokeswoman for the National Candle Association, warns that people may throw the candles in the trash, causing their trash to catch fire. Despite this, trick candles are fun to blow out repeatedly.

  • Growing up I wasnt allowed to touch anything on my mothers altars….not even candle drips so I would use bday candles she kept in the kitchen junk drawer and she was a smoker so lighters & matches were in abundance….now after decades I still use bday candles….I am just glad that now in Party stores there are more amazing varieites & sizes than when I was a kid….GREAT article….YES…bday candles are very powerful 💜

  • this is amazing, thank you. i just remembered that i saved a birthday candle from a guy i had a huge crush on, i took it from his cake and kept it (i am very sentimental) from about 20 years ago, i have it hidden away, that candle is going to manifest some very special things, i am not going to use it any time soon xoxo

  • Great article on candle magic. I am always afraid of leaving a candle burning and they take an awfully long time to burn down so I usually have to be close by and watch them. I snuff it out if I have to leave and do other things. I have used the birthday candles and I like them much better and I do stay with them and pray and send my intentions while they are burning down. I find it much safer and feel like I’ve gotten a lot of energy into them. Thank you for the helpful article and I’m happy to see my birthday candle idea wasn’t crazy after all. 🕯💙

  • This was incredibly validating because I started candle magic recently and was inspired to use birthday candles because a lot of spells require a candle to burn down completely. I didn’t think I was the first person to think of it, but I hadn’t noticed anyone else do it yet. I started with a banishment of negativity from a job I just released and it was amazing. I did it the way you did, so that may have been what made it work so well. There are so many colors! I even have silver and gold. The trickiest color to acquire has been orange. Maybe that can change in October? 😉

  • I love this. I wondered how you would secure the candle. I have thought about making a birthday candle holder from clay but this is better. I remember my granddaughter (now about to have my second great grandson)watching me do candle magic and then later on saying “light the candle and say the words mammaw” lol

  • Llewelyn is great, I love their books. Summoning spirits by Konstantinos is what got me into magick originally 😁 I didn’t know you were associated with Llewelyn that is SOOO awesome! I been wearing a king solomon seal for magick knowledge and I found myself on a couple new YouTubers and books, so I’ll take that as a synchronicity

  • I love this idea! I’m doing this today ON my birthday. So here’s to money coming my way. By the way, what do you do with the remaining items (basil, coins, leftover wax, ash from the incense, etc.)? I’m considering putting those in a red flannel cloth bag, tying it all up, dressing it with some money drawing oil and carrying it with me.

  • 11:43 I’ve had 60 years to think of this, why didn’t I? It’s a great idea! At my age I no longer have the time or energy to put into a candle. I’m at the point where I prefer to use mental magic which isn’t always the easiest. And the 7 day candle spells are impossible at my age. Cats prowling, adult children, forget it. Life was easier when I was single, with just a cat.

  • I started out using birthday candles because they’re generally inconspicuous and affordable as well as colorful. Tea lights are now my go to. But for awhile I thought I needed the chime candles and the big pillar candles to get my point across but those birthday candles do pack a punch! They came through for me so many times and I didn’t have to wait around very long for it to burn down. Can’t forget that they are travel sized too and pack nicely into a small altoid altar. And they’re just plain cute especially dressed in herbs. ❤

  • I know this article post is 2 years out, but curious because I have several used-once-only birthday candles in a drawer.. I’m thinking an energy cleanse would take care of that. But now another thought, what about a numbered birthday candle for a money spell. How awesome would it be to try that out? Maybe write a short incantation adding zeros behind the number? I’m going to try it! So exciting coming up with your own energy work.

  • This worked! Our dog Billy couldn’t be around our cats and had issues with other dogs as well. We didn’t want to rehome the poor little guy so I decided to try this spell. It took a few months, but I have to say, it packs a punch where you need it! He can now roam our house and he leaves the cats alone. He’s even better on walks when we see other dogs. Thank you!! 🖤🖤🐈‍⬛

  • Rosemary and Thyme,… I’ll have to do some shopping. I was going to do some creative thinking and save one of those frickin vampires and put in a tiny potion looking bottle from the dollar store and add a little baking soda, cayenne pepper inside. Then use your new moon banishing spell ingredients and do that as well (even though its not a new moon lol), charge the candle, and the flame, and use some of the wax and stick on top of the bottle and do a sorta bottle spell/candle spell. I just still might… All ready threw away a leather couch infested. Trying to save the loveseat which wasn’t too bad, with baking soda and hairdryer, Raid,… (exhausting).

  • Great Little article. I am a fan of Tea Light Candles as I do not like snuffing out Taper Candles or leaving the Candle unattanded for too long, however, access to a variety of colours can be difficult so I have to use White. Along with the White Tea Light, I do lay and use the appropiate Crystals, Oils, Herb/Spice, Incense and even a Tarot Card with the Tea Light. Would using the named items with a coloured Birthday Candle be more effective…or is my current practice with a White Tea Light Candle appropiate in your experience? Thanks.

  • You know what’s really funny? I just pulled out a pack of birthday candles I bought months ago and started using them a couple days ago and I’ve actually been using them this exact way! I think it’s funny how I just started doing that and I just found this article (never saw that article before now either)! Thank you so much for sharing! I’m so happy I found you here <3

  • I have someone “a karmic” sending negative energy my way..she went to a root worker and had magic done on me.. since I’m on a tight budget, I can’t afford certain things at the moment but I have bought 2 black candles lite them to send the energy away but I need more candles because she just won’t stop! & I found some tea light black candles on eBay i wanna try them out.. do you think that will work?

  • I am considering getting into magic when I am older, and I will probably do candle magic since it seems to be the easiest to work with. Can’t do it now since I am living with people that don’t believe in magic and they would think I am crazy for doing it, so I will wait until I am older and living out on my own.
