Conspiracy mentality is a phenomenon that correlates with certain personality traits, such as low levels of trust and an increased need for closure. There is little to no evidence that conspiracy theory beliefs are associated with mental illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depression. Conspiracy theorists believe plots are behind many situations, such as the Apollo moon landing being faked or the White House forcing Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy.
Conspiracy theorists are not all simple-minded, mentally unwell individuals, but rather they turn to conspiracy theories to fulfill their needs. For many individuals, conspiracy theories do not control their lives or cause severe emotional disturbance. A national survey of 2021 U.S. adults asked about 15 psychological and political characteristics and beliefs in 39 different conspiracy theories.
Marginalized people made into villains by various conspiracy theories need access to quality mental health care provided by therapists who will affirm their experiences. David Morrill of Portland, Oregon, was involved in online conspiracy theory communities until a mental health crisis forced him to confront his beliefs.
A new study delves into the intricate psyche of conspiracy theorists, attributing their beliefs to a mixture of personality traits and motivations. For mental health practitioners, it is important to understand and mitigate the vulnerability that a mental disorder creates to extremists. People can be prone to believing in conspiracy theories due to a combination of personality traits and motivations, including relying strongly on their intuition.

Was really hoping you’d talk about how to deal with fanatical conspiracy theorists. It’s okay to prepare and be ready for bad stuff (ie the end of days). However, when you think that you know the “truth” and everyone else is blind, and you make your children think they won’t live to be married or have children, you’ve gone too far. It’s difficult to deal with this attitude when your married into the family and they all believe it to an extent.
All I’ll say is, listen to both sides repeatedly. Don’t just be convinced and assume the other side has no explanation. I thought the denver airport theories seemed incontrovertible until I saw the debunk. The one who states his case first seems right, until the other comes and examines him. Proverbs 18:17
If you get super-juiced when you think about a subject…they got you! If they shout from the rooftops and tell you that only they know the truth…they got you! If you don’t hear both sides of an argument, and some admission that the other side has a point…they really got you! Frightened, lonely, and struggling people are the best targets for this stuff. Protect your loved ones from falling into the trap.
1. Gods word says earth does not move, Science says earth is moving in multiple directions at once. 2. Gods word says there’s a dome firmament above us, science says there is space above us. 3. Gods word says God spoke everything into existence, science says nothing created everything. 4. Gods word says we are created in the image of God, science says we come from the image of monkeys. 5. Gods word says God is seated above the firmament on his throne of glory, science says there’s nothingness above us. 6. Gods word says one sun, one moon, and stars were placed in the firmament, science says there are multiple suns which are stars, and multiple moons around “planets” 7. Gods word says that they are “wandering stars”, science says that they are planets that we will live on one day to escape earth. 8. Gods word says the floodgates of heaven were opened and the waters above came down and flooded the earth, science again says there’s nothingness above us. 9. Gods word says there is an up and a down “heaven and hell”, science says up and down are relative and do not really exist “heaven and hell do not exist” 10. Gods word says that God finished all of his creation on the 6th day and rested. Science says the universe is still expanding to this day.
Tell that to Dave Ramsey and the rest of the anti Covid and anti vaccine and the rest of the people. Dave says no to political on the show yet has been spewing it from the start of 2020. Edit: I thought this was going to be a show about combating conspiracy theories not embrace them. Bye bye Ramsey company, I’m done with your promotion to conspiracies.
Is it possible to have a relationship with someone who is a conspiracist? My partner started becoming a conspiracist about four years into our now ten-year relationship. I find some of these conspiracies disgusting, e.g. Sandyhook never happened and the current climate global warming is due to climate control techniques. My partner is highly educated.
People are really taking offense to this. No one is being accused here…Perhaps some people here are investigating because they have been accused of believing what people in their lives label “conspiracy theories.” I hope people are able to look at the stuff that sparks that defensiveness. Anyways, thanks for the article. I appreciate learning that we all hold at least one conspiracy theory. Validation and normalization is important, so I will be much kinder to my friend who may be drifting into a psychotic episode.
