Are Magic Johnson And The Los Angeles Lakers Co-Owners?

Magic Johnson, a five-time NBA champion and three-time NBA most valuable player, is currently part-owner of teams in four U.S. sports leagues. He was a minority owner in the past but sold his stake in the Los Angeles Lakers in 2010. Johnson is also a founding member of Guggenheim Baseball Management, managing entity of the MLB’s Los Angeles Dodgers, and is part of ownership groups of the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks, the MLS’ Los Angeles FC, the NFL’s Washington Commanders, and the NWSL’s Washington Spirit.

In June 1981, Lakers owner Jerry Buss announced that Magic Johnson had signed a 25-year, $25 million contract with the Lakers. At the time, it was the longest and richest deal in sports history. Johnson holds an empire of businesses, including part-ownership of the Los Angeles Dodgers and an infrastructure firm renovating LaGuardia Airport. Since his retirement, Johnson has been an advocate for HIV/AIDS prevention and safe sex, as well as an entrepreneur, philanthropist, broadcaster, and motivational speaker.

Johnson bought a 4.5 stake in the Los Angeles Lakers for $10 million in 1994, which he sold in 2010, right before NBA team values exploded. After selling his stake in the Lakers, Johnson invested $50 million in 2012 for a 2.3 ownership stake in the Dodgers. Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong, a Lakers season-ticket holder for 25 years, bought Johnson’s stake in the team for an undisclosed sum.

Magic Johnson’s love for his Los Angeles Lakers has kept him from considering ownership of any other NBA team. He says his current ownerships wouldn’t have happened without Jerry Buss allowing him to be part-owner of the Los Angeles Lakers. In 2012, he was part of an ownership group that purchased the Los Angeles Dodgers and rejoined the Lakers franchise as an adviser to Jeanie Buss.

In conclusion, Magic Johnson is a successful businessman who has a strong connection to Los Angeles and has made significant contributions to the sports industry.

  • JJ Reddick got a smug know it all attitude, can’t wait till reality sets for JJ as a rookie coach and he struggles and I want to see how he responds. The arrogant attitude JJ has ain’t gonna cut it, he got to be more humble. Every first year coach goes through growing pains. Joe Mazulla look like a deer in the headlights his first year vs the Heat in the ECF and admitted he did a terrible job as a coach after going down 0-3 to the underman Heat team but now Joe is one of the best coaches in the league. But Mazulla never came with arrogance, he came humble and earned the respect of his players with no real credential not being a former player and being an assistant coach for a Division 2 bball team. JJ dissing the old players like Bob Cousy calling them milkman & plumbers but JJ was never close to a superstar in his career and thinking he’s the holy grail of a HC wit no coaching resume, JJ needs to be humble

  • Not only does the “Plumber” have the resume to criticize Darvin Ham, nor did he possess the skill set or the I.Q. to coach these guys past Denver, Dallas, Minnesota, and Golden State! I have the upmost Love for Lebron, but shame on him for not standing up for Darvin Ham! Darvin maxed that time with aging stars and a very inconsistent and unpredictable supporting cast! This was a bad hire, I will wait to be proven wrong! 😮

  • I’m a Lakers fan, and I’m standing on business when I say, it was not all on Darvin Ham.. An it wasn’t all on Russell Westbrook.. Like Bron and the media tried to manipulate everyone to think that it was.. Lakers definitely got worse.. D’Lo doesn’t show up when it counts, and can’t play defense.. Austin Reaves is very good offensively.. But his defense is trash.. Rui Hachimura, we don’t know what we’re going to get out of him on a game to game basis.. And on top of that we didn’t get any free agents this summer.. Yeah we are in very big trouble this year.. I’ll be surprised if we make the playoffs this year, better yet the play in tournament.. Unless Rob Pelinka can make a big trade before the trade deadline.. Which I doubt very seriously

  • 0:00 Look back on Magic’s time as president of basketball operations for the Los Angeles Lakers. 2:00 Stephen A. Smith asks Magic about what led to his resignation. 5:25 Magic Johnson explains that he wanted to fire Luke Walton but Los Angeles Lakers executive Tim Harris wanted to retain him. 8:42 Magic explains why he resigned without telling LeBron James. 17:40 Magic Johnson identifies Lakers GM Rob Pelinka as the “backstabber.”

  • The Magic man, will he ever be replicated in modern day leadership in sports. In my sixties, I cannot recall a man with the physical talent, the ability to step back and make amends within his personal life, the ability to connect with teammates, the public, ownership, family. A man with integrity, demonstrating honesty, a desire to make everyone better, selfless. What an articulate, caring, intelligent forward thinking individual, just a pleasure experiencing his journey. Stay safe❤️🙏🏻

  • Magic Johnson and Larry Bird. You will not hear two more passionate players of the sport called basketball. The amount of class between these two men cannot be measured by any instrument on earth. I’m glad to have been alive to witness both of their careers, passion and skill set. Long live those G.O.A.T’s 👍

  • Magic an all-time great player. That’s obvious. Sometimes though great players don’t make great GM’s. It’s a far more complex job then he realized. Roster building was difficult enough in the old days. Now the contracts are more complicated, there salary cap ramifications, sign and trades, luxury tax thresholds, more advanced scouting, one and done college players, far more knowledgeable agents, plus player’s attitudes and dedication are different in the modern. He discovered all these things and said…. “let me go to the LAX, pick-up Lebron, get him signed and then tell Jeannie this is too much for me”. He’s an ambassador of the game, not a GM, at least by today’s standards….

  • Magic is Mr. Laker It’s no question that he’d do anything to make the Laker a winning team, with what he has, and what resources are available. I’ll ALWAYS believe in Magic. Magic also has too much class to stir up drama and make a big scene, but I understand he has to clear the air instead of letting rumors float around that’s hurting his reputation, and even does that with class and transparency.

  • Will always say this was a bad look for the Lakers. Pretty easy to look like a master GM the likes of Masai Ujiri or Sam Presti when you got player like AD forcing their teams hand to trade him for a cent on the dollar. In 3 yrs time when LBJ retires they’ll be right back in the post-Kobe world of Lottery-ville.

  • Magic slammed management and then he comes in and mad some head shaking moves and tried to throw Rob under the bus and have you noticed since he’s left there’s been no issues in the Lakers camp. Magic wasn’t cut out for the job and it’s ok, he wasn’t cut out to coach and that’s ok, but I won’t forget him trying to bring down Rob. Yes he is charming and all but that doesn’t make me see past the bs that went down.

  • A couple of things are apparent: first, Kobe didn’t like people who weren’t all in. Magic dividing his time between his business enterprises and the Lakers would look like Shaq doing movies and a rap career instead of being in the gym working on his game. If you read between the lines, we also see that Kobe was pulling the strings, not simply the coattails of Buss. So, you have a part time manager in Magic, who comes in and tells people what to do and leaves–not gonna work well in that triangle. What is clearly the last straw for Magic is that when it came down to it, Jeanie Buss sided with Kobe’s camp over Magic. Now Lebron is the last man standing with the power chip…

  • if there was ever a true ambassador for basketball and the lakers he’s it…great spirit, intelligent, humble….jeanie threw him under the buss so to speak…great loss for the lakers…you cant help but like and respect him….no wonder him and bird are friends…birds of a feather…he reminds me of bill russell another class act of the nba….great stuff…

  • Why was Magic listening to GOSSIP? That should have been beneath him. You hear it keep a watchful eye out, but you don’t let it shake you to the point of giving up and walking away from your job. You signed a contract, honor it. Also, you have to watch out for the people who bringing you these bones and leaving them. You must also ask yourself what’s in this for this person bringing me all this news? Why? Magic is a great guy and very very well as verse, he knows who to read people so he should have done what he did, and not took the job if it was going to cause all of this.

  • Clash of principles, ethics, and beliefs between old NBA Guards and the new NBA guards. Different pro basketball 🏀 times, folks. NBA viewerships has been down quite a bit for numbers of years now, especially recent years, and so hats off to the organization Old Guard like Magic Johnson to know his time to let go. Respect.

  • Jeannie Buss is the owner. Jeannie is very loyal to her friends, acquaintances and employees to a fault. This has hurt the Lakers, but it also has helped the Lakers tremendously, its a double edged sword. She gets this quality from her father, Dr Jerry Buss. Jeannie brought in Byron Scott, Luke Walton and also Magic all former Lakers. When things went south she was ripped for not being corporation businesslike and trying to be too old school. But actually Scott was a proven coach but the team just wasn’t right and Kobe was at the end of his career. Later Kobe blew out his Achilles’s and Jeannie stuck with him and gave him a huge final contract extension. Even though the team was losing, Kobe proved to be the only thing to keep interest in the Lakers. Also by showing loyalty and decency the Lakers also landed Magic and consequently Lebron and turned the tide. Jeannie’s loyalty to people also had a part in getting AD and ultimately got them back to the CHAMPIONSHIP last year. So Jeannie’s old school way of treating people right has been proven to be valid. Kobe brought the Lakers championships after Dr Buss’ death while under Jeannie’s watch, so when Jeannie gave Kobe that big final contract that set the tone for the future and made players want to come to the Lakers. I was in favor of getting rid of Rob Pelinka at one time but he has actually done a great job in helping shape the Lakers’ roster.

  • If you guys really want to know, and I know that most of you are not going to agree. But, I’m going to say it anyway. It was Kobe that was wielding the axe, so to speak. It was Kobe that was behind the whole thing. Magic is just not going to say it, especially with the fact of Kobe’s passing, and the sentiments involved. I always “knew that it was Kobe. Rob is the face, and the fall guy, in this scenario. Just as everyone on the panel knows, Rob did not have that kind of power. Rob was simply being “propped up” by Kobe. Kobe knew the power that Magic had as a former Laker, inside and outside of the Laker organization. Not only is Magic loved by the Laker organization, Magic is loved by Southern Californians, by California politicians, and by business people alike. And, that’s to say the least. Kobe wanted to break the Laker bond that Magic had with Jeanie Buss, and had with Jerry Buss. A simple scheme of “divide and conquer.” I saw it from the beginning, and I know that others saw it and others within the organization know, including LeBron. But with the death of Kobe, it would almost be like a “career suicide” to speak on it, or against it. If anyone has an inkling of a brain, it’s all right there in plain view. I was very much a Kobe fan, and I still am, to an extent, but I was and still am, a big fan of Magic Johnson, and that is as a former player, a businessman, and just a great overall human being. Kobe was one f the best to ever lace em up, he had become one helluva businessman, but he couldn’t outdo Magic as a “Southern California” icon, and humanitarian.

  • In my opinion Magic Johnson is the 2nd best basketball player of all time behind the GOAT aka Michael Jordan but I know alot wont agree with me but Magic played in a tough era just like Jordan in my opinion if LeBron went up against the BAD BOY PISTONS they would probably put LBJ in the hospital I mean LeBron would cry if Jokim Noah would even look at him but this is just my opinion I’m sure the LeBron lovers will talk about how tough he is

  • This is still hard to watch! Magic let his emotions get the best of him and as life long magic and lakers fan. Thankfully this is over Rob has been great and my childhood idol is in the DMV helping reshape our beloved Washington Team. Hopefully he remains to be a positive voice and not like this here because this is sad to watch one of my favorite people in the world blast his and our team and rob like this when as a man you hear this go speak to rob man to man because you had the power and your supposed to be help prepare him for the position naturally he is looking for you his job is directly affected by you and your title and sometimes friends hears things and take it wrong just saying low moment for magic attacking the lakers and rob who had no chance to defend themselves on this stage which was obviously a low blow. Still love magic but this was weak and beneath one of the most beloved and trail blazing humans In our lifetime

  • Looking back you can tell Jeanie more or less makes decisions based on emotion, and looking at the current roster you can tell that there’s a similarity between retaining certain role players vs not making the best possible trades. In all fairness Magic is making the correct assessment, he’s been an executive so Jeanie has more to learn from Magic than Magic has to listen to her, with all due respect

  • They should have listen to Magic! We won the Championship in 2020 because of the adrenaline of Kobe & Gigi’s passing and how it fueled a already good team but Rob Palinki should have been working with Magic instead of against him so now 2021 the Lakers should have had a Repeat and they are perusal the Finals from home!

  • I don’t know why YouTube have it where you can dislike a vid and it shows the number of people who disliked the vid but you can dislike a comment but it won’t show how many people disliked it. What’s the point of having a “thumbs down” by comments if it doesn’t display how many people disliked the comment? That’s stupid.

  • I always tend to come back to this…..Magic didn’t last one season with Bron……everyone is talking about Rob….nah if you remember when bron came to LA and they were losing he said that he knew what he was getting into….as soon as the deadline came the LAKERS traded everyone (Ball,Hart,Ingram) to win NOW….that was Rob? Nah I don’t buy it….it’s Rob and Bron I don’t believe the Buss family would disrespect Magic like that….MAGIC FUCKING JOHNSON???? Nah the backstabbing was Rob and Bron on the low….they went from restructuring to trying to win now…..they pushed him out….all of them Stars are stars and they always get a say……Magic isn’t trying to throw anyone under the bus no pun intended 😂 sad sad stuff…there are reasons why top coaches never clamor to coach Bron never not ever lol there are reasons for that…there are reason Bron gets called LEGM 😂😂 truly sad

  • Magic quit the Lakers as an executive and then they went on to win the bubble championship. Doing this tell all blame game did not impress me. Magic also quit as Lakers coach after about 5 minutes. Lol. Magic was a great great all-time great player but he was very spoiled to go from a great championship team at Michigan State in college to a Lakers team with unbelievable talent on it already he was very fortunate for him that he did not have to go the Christian Laettner route and go to the worst team in the league. I mean can you imagine if Magic had to go to Minnesota for the first few years of his career? Lol. It may have ruined his career as a did many others.

  • Magic ….you were to defend this House. Laker mentality: Perhaps in hindsight. He would say Dr Buss would have wanted Magic to fight. To look after his little girl Jennie. To rise and defend …..what you have created Magic. To succumb to Rob…..most would say. You should have calculated differently. Play the game you knew was happening. You had the administrative support perusal for you. 🤔

  • Magic was a great bb player and a great business man and he would have been a great President but the work environment became to toxic Magic is saying pple talking behind his back Pelinka back stabbing, if Magic could have stayed He could have helped buikd the lakers to become champions. Did not know Rambis was in management, Rambis was a former Player with the lakers. Much respect to Magic for leaving that toxic messy environment working wirh pple like that is to draining and distracting wish he could have nipped that in the bud. I wish Magic could have stayed but now understand why he left.

  • Magic is clearly out to make Rob Palinka reputation look bad. He does not like Rob Palinka. Magic is whining and is a quitter. Magic quit on the Lakers period and let down a lot of people. Magic Johnson quit period. Stephen A Smith is literally defending Magic Johnson by his directed questions to make Magic Johnson look good and defend his lies.

  • Looking back at this it was a disaster from the start. If Jeanie hired magic to run the show why bring in Pelinka. If she hired Pelinka why give Magic the President position. It seems Pelinka was the guy she wanted as the man and Magic as just a face. Jeanie also loved Kobe was why Pelinka got the position so Kobe ( before his death) was also going to be involved in the future. Magic wanted his star player Lebron and his coach Lue. If he stayed it would have been Pelinka/Kobe vs Magic/Lebron with Tim Harris sneaking around. Magic made the right decision to leave. Too many egos.

  • Hi edagdwg thanks You tube for sharing this story of what happens when you know God for yourself and live with yourself as a child of God pay attention to what you use your name for being yourself is all you can be he never let anyone tell him what to do he is always a man linda j.☮️🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏 God bless him always Linda j.❤️💯💯💯💯💯

  • Not really knowing the whole story this is sounding like the owner, head N in charge situation. Again, Magic being the head N has been called out and put in his place. Time still show us things really haven’t changed and we are just faces positioned but not really symbolic in a since of power or meaning. They treated him like a N and he didn’t like it got out and I think he sees there really isn’t any change. Lebron wasn’t told before hand because Magic didn’t want it to hurt his relations with the organization after he left. It’s what the previous generation has done, is doing to us now. Lies of how you get education, have more opportunity, to move up and things are better. No, those in that position have been more silenced then the ones at the bottom because they have a lot to loose and is it even worth it.

  • Isnt that the issue with most family oriented business though? Everyone wants a role but never master they role first? Players can’t be on court and referee. The man selling shirts can’t be in kitchen making hamburger 🍔. The ball boys can’t be the announcer. The tickets sales department can’t be outside doing security….

  • In my opinion Rob Pelinka needs to step down cause he does not know what he doing and let magic Johnson step in and get the job done right and get younger players… and Jenny Boss you know that your dad will be happy with Magic Johnson running the GM department step up and fire rob Pelinka now so the Lakers can move forward and start getting ready for next year …

  • late to the game…. came here after perusal The Legacy documentary series on the Lakers history…. what I’m not too clear on is how Rob Pelinka got from being Kobe’s manager to someone in the Lakers management..?? that doc series really made Magic looking like a loser chump with this move…so, I just needed to find out what really went down…

  • Magic a NATURAL LEADER n knows basic sound principle that each team member must stay in their lane. Jeanne did not enforce that basic. Women don’t HAVE the GIFT of LEADERSHIP. SHE was GIFTED to AIDE and ASSIST. Golda Meier ALWAYS looked whimpie n freakish in that leadership position as did Aquino n Bhut??? of Pakistan. It’s not any gender thing. It’s a divine practical thing. The women was created FROM the male body. Not any gender call. ’twas a divine call. She’s naturally equipped to support. Those who can’t see it, need study her capabilities extent. THOSE who won’t see it need study their SPIRIT and ask why. This is ALL about a DIVINE decision n he has every right sense BEHIND his decision n directions.

  • So, Magic quit because people were saying things behind his back. Sounds like the same thing that caused his relationships with Isaish to sour. He heard from friends that Isaiah was saying bad things (Isaiah asked around if Magic was gay because he was diagnosed with the Aids virus)….Causing Magic to side with Michael Jordan in keeping Isaiah off the basketball court. Sounds like to me that Magic has trouble going directly to his friends and confronting them about the gossip. Here, maybe magis should have sat down the people who were talking and told them how he felt directly. Otherwise, it makes Magic make rash and emotional decisions that he later regrets, like he did with Isaiah. Sounds like he’s too sensitive.

  • Magic found out what it’s like to have Judases or disloyal folks, when he got AIDS. His “Judas radar” has been up ever since. He worked extremely hard in hoop, in biz and he gave Lakers 5 titles & revolutionized NBA hoop & that first title he did ALL BY himself. It’s pretty much blasphemy for someone to be such a weasel… even if he looks like a coke head used car saleman…u still don’t diss Magic like that. So much nerve.

  • LAKERS R 1 of d worst team so far in terms of Hustle play! Basketball identity! Urgency! 3pts %! Understanding about approaching game! Team chemistry! Guards analytical thinking! Some players team spirit! Interest in playing most d game! Slow & jockeying in per possession! Lack of domination! Floppers! SOftness in defense! Crying every hard foul! & Coaching assessment on reactions + adjustments!!!!! Analyze this people!! Basketball players & coaching staff pls comment…

  • Magic I love you Brother one of my favorites I must say this you sound like a heartbroken ex who hasn’t gotten over the breakup you quit as a Head Coach, you quit as s President and they go on and win a championship I wish you had this much passion when it came to Isiah Thomas your friend being kept off the dream team it didn’t work out why you talking so much about it to this day get it over it and live your life

  • I see people applauding Magic and it makes me sick. Let’s remember he quit as a head coach and early in his playing career he was influential and had a championship coach in Paul Westhead fired. Magic quit on Jeannie Buss, he quit on Lebron and he quit on the whole organization. He was a great player in the NBA, but doesn’t have the patience to run a team in any capacity other than being a player. I hate the way he left.

  • Bad MOVE!!!! MEGA BAD MOVE THEY LOST THE MAJIC, GOING TO LOOSE KING JAMES. I WISH TBEM WELL BUT REAL TALK….. THE KING FEELIN SOME KIND OF Way. Whata REAL GENTLEMAN HE CUT THE DRAMA BUT I GURANTEE YOU THE KING JAMES IS EXITING NOTHING TO DP WITH MAJIC. KING JAMES WILL NOT PLAY WITH DISTRUST. I LOVE BOTH THESE KING. STEPHEN LOVE YOU AS WELL.

  • They tryna take from him and force him out to get somebody else in his position and why lie about his power he has y’all been tryna setup Magic Johnson up for failure to make him uncomfortable to remove himself or get him in trouble from what u told him he can do and now claiming the power wasn’t there to do so sounds fishy to me too much hating more love please God will bless

  • If he’s such a stand up guy and straight shooter why not bring up how back when he was running things in LA mid season calling up Ben simmons and telling him how he should fly out work with magic in the gym and any advice give him a call? Sixers management was furious and actually put a lawsuit against LA for this. The Lakers has always been a dirty Organization and magic is no different

  • DiMare Boys on this on the show here they want to compare you to Brothers that’s all they do is comparing y’all who’s better than this and who’s this we don’t rock that way we ball players respect ball players the white boys always got to put their Monkey Wrench in the game plan are you going to compare Kobe Bryant to Magic Johnson

  • Okay I would hate to be liking tea and get in an argument with him he’s from Detroit t is from Detroit and St to testify with you magic and Kyrie Irving about how nasty Orlando is and I was telling it to fort Jackson South Carolina if he is somewhere with Danielle Knowles oh Danielle Knox they are nasty too and he should testify me and him are always getting in the argument with me trying to treat him the best that I know how even when he can’t be my man I would really try to treat tea the best that I know how because he should separate from Orlando with those people here he’s helping with.
