Are Magic Mushrooms Accepted In The State Of Washington?

Psychedelic mushrooms, also known as magic mushrooms, are currently classified as a Schedule I controlled substance in the US. However, this law is not as significant as it might seem, as each state can supersede these laws. Seattle recently decriminalized mushrooms and other psychedelics for non-commercial uses, making the city headlines. Under the United States Controlled Substances Act, psilocybin is currently classified as a Schedule 1 drug.

In Washington, psychedelic mushrooms are illegal in the state. The University of Washington School of Medicine is conducting a trial to evaluate the therapeutic value of psilocybin for treating co-occurring PTSD and alcohol. A bill sponsored by Sen. Jesse Salomon would allow people 21 or older to take psilocybin, the psychedelic drug in magic mushrooms, in a licensed service. Two states have legalized medical uses of psychedelic mushrooms, but Washington state lawmakers want more information on the benefits before following suit.

A study on the therapeutic value of psychedelic mushrooms for treating addiction and trauma is on track to begin at the University of Washington School of Medicine. Washington psychonauts will have to wait at least another year before therapy using psychedelic mushrooms is broadly legalized in the Evergreen State.

The House passed a bill Tuesday that could lead to the legalization of psilocybin services, possibly following Oregon’s footsteps. Psilocybin and other psychedelics are listed on the Controlled Substance Act’s Schedule 1, along with LSD, peyote, and marijuana.

  • “Not motivated by external factors like profit margin” says the therapist who wants guaranteed patients in his office seeking help by wanting the intake of psilocybin monitored by therapists. Is he going to “monitor” all these new patients for free? What a hack. Legalize it all for home use. If it doesn’t affect neighbors, leave people alone!

  • There is a huge body of anecdotal (and some double-blind studies) supporting the use of psilocybin for cluster headaches. From personal experience, a few pretty high doses* force my variant migraines into COMPLETE remission for between 2 and 5 YEARS; I have done this about 8 times over 30 years, repeating each time they recur. — * three doses over a week, counter-intuitively descending.

  • Answer to end of article questions: Basic psilocybin research by the common person + google shows the world how harmless as well as similar to brain chemistry psilocybin is. Basic #2 : safety is backed by the longest hostory of usage . Basic #3 psilocybin is a tool capable of way more than personal healing . Safe everdeepening excursions are possible with increased dose . Cheers to all from WA

  • I would absolutely HATE a dr being present when im on mushrooms, but psilocin is Not going to help out everyone with issues such as severe panic/anxiety you dont want to be on a stimulant….that being said i understand why a dr being present should be optional b/c bad trips or taking too much happens and could really cause some problems, and i could never see this being used for something such as Schizophrenia ……..the good out weighs the bad shrooms safe as it gets and if it helps it is another tool so i am all for it as i have gained from them

  • If safety is one’s priority they will be depressed and out of the flow state. It’s about getting rid of all the paranoia and letting go. Safe people drink alcohol which has no medical use (although it’s debatable) so to say mushrooms are psychoactive and risky is such BS because alcohol changes body chemistry too. So what? Mind your own business and have fun being rigid and depressed

  • Not afraid to share my insight on talking about this as this could be potentially more of a profound and life changing experience instead of Cannabis, as Cannabis is most often used for pain relief and to uplift ones euphoria and loosen up tense muscles in people with various physiological illnesses, as of now, psilocybin is somewhere in shades between an experiment and clinical trial, I’m happy to share this comment as someone with sometimes flashes of bad mood and the world not feeling as if it is immersing or engaging, or having a happy introspection, this comment is meant for educational and informational purposes only, i’m not encouraging or recommending use of any substance without supervision of a doctor.

  • USA is supposed to be about legally being able to pursue happiness. Anyone who is against the legalization of psychoactive substances is obviously inexperienced. Take mushrooms 30 times and then come back and comment. Don’t stop at one time because you have a bad trip but be brave and keep moving and you’ll eventually see your folly. At least try micro dosing for 3 months and then tell us. Be a scientist, not a dingaling

  • we’re slowly progressing more and more, slowly easing back on the hypocrisy. In time, not only will psychedelic mushrooms, “magic” mushrooms be legal recreationally but cannabis, mushrooms and yes, booze, will be permitted for 18 plus adults, not this stupid 21 plus crap. Yes, if you are old enough to vote, get married and even join a war but told you’re not old enough to drink a beer or smoke some weed, then it is clearly hypocrisy.

  • What is a good “microdose” when I was over 200 lbs 10 years ago, I used to trip and took a minimum of 3.5g at a time, but the other day I tried to microdose with just .5 and felt more anxious than anything (I’ve lost over 100 lbs since I last tried mushrooms so I’m sure bodyweight plays a factor). I’m just trying to find the right micro dose for me! I do not want to trip or feel anxious.

  • In fact, all the mushrooms should help the scientists to find better drugs with lesser side effects, rather than repressing drugs. It is stupid. All these Mushrooms should make an effort that better drugs are available which give you more euphoria, more joy, and no side effects. Now science is capable of doing it.

  • I don’t understand why no one wants to talk about LSD ? The mother of all psychadelics. I think of all of the brilliant minds its inspired, and the entire counterculture revolution it spawned. Its as American as Apple Pie. And with responsible adult usage this state of spiritual prosperity and can be revived

  • Some of the interactions I’ve had with people that support legalizing shrooms is different from the image they try to paint. I’m trying to find out about them but there are things that worry me. Most shroomers cont walk past a shelf of them in the wild without picking and eating every last single one of them and they will go wild eating them everyday until they are gone.

  • And what types of people will use these??? Hoorayyyyyyy. Just what we neeeeeeed. Drugged up, angry, desensitized to violent article games, armed people who are already mentally unwell from just about every world event the past few years and lost their job and got looked at “wrong.” What could possibly go wrong?

  • Yup. Just what Seattle needs. More drug use. (Sarcasm!) I’m no prude. I tried too many drugs when I was young. Heroin, cocaine, LSD, crisscrosses, mescaline, crack, (clean 25 years this June!) The only thing I ever stuck with was cannabis. It does no harm, it is not addictive. Seattle doesn’t need to legalize more drugs. It needs leadership that cracks down on crime and fully funds police and shows them some respect for a change. Start building tiny home complexes for the homeless, and give them incentives to address their issues. By the way – back in the 80s, when you destroyed the 5 big low income housing projects – Yesler Terrace, Rainier Vista, Holly Park, & the 2 in West Seattle that I can’t recall the names of – what did they think was going to happen? Well THIS is what happened: All the poor people got shoved out, the city took those properties and built houses and a few apartments on that land. The result being that the city and developer got RICH, while all we got was SCREWED. 😡
