Are Magic Mushrooms Prohibited In Australia?

Psilocybin, a hallucinogenic compound found in certain mushrooms, is the main psychoactive ingredient in magic mushrooms. When taken, it converts to psilocin in the body, providing its psychoactive properties. Australia has become the first country in the world to legalize the use of psychedelics to treat mental health disorders. However, the cultivation, manufacture, possession, use, selling, or supply of psilocybin or magic mushrooms is illegal in Australia. Penalties for possessing or supplying psilocybin can carry up to two years imprisonment or more.

Australia has become the first country to recognize psychedelic substances as medicines after the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) approved the psychedelic substances in February. From July 2023, authorised psychiatrists can prescribe psilocybin for treatment-resistant depression. An activist couple persuaded regulators to clear MDMA and psilocybin for medical use, which became magnets for controversy.

Australian psychiatrists will be allowed to prescribe the active ingredients in magic mushrooms and ecstasy from July 1, bringing a range of risks and therapeutic benefits. Psychedelics include psilocybin, MDMA, LSD, ayahuasca, peyote, and other drugs. The Drug Misuse and Trafficking Act 1985 categorizes drug quantities with increasing penalties. Magic mushroom spores and grow kits are not yet available in Australia.

  • I recently tried shrooms for the first time at 43 years old and it was the 3rd best and most meaningful experience of my life after being spiritually saved and baptized. They are a gift from God. They will change your life for the better. My depression is pretty much gone after 2 shroom trips. I’m kinder to people and more aware of how they are feeling and my ego is pretty much non existent at this point.

  • Absolute nonsense. We self administer drugs every day (caffeine, paracetemol, ibuprofen, alcohol etc) and these dont lead me to want to take opioids any more than if I’ve taken a few grams of mushrooms. Its such a shame there are still people who are in positions of authority pushing back on the inevitability of people using these fantastic tools for self therapy until they are rightfully legalised. Psychedelics have completely changed the way I view this reality for the better and they literally saved my life.

  • Medical/psychological studies are demonstrating certain psychedelics can be helpful in treating certain mental/psychological illnesses. Psychiatric Therapy is necessary along with the psychedelic substances for success in treating certain illnesses and symptoms. “Psychology Today Feb 2023” has an article for those interested.

  • One fact that wasn’t mentioned in response to the gentleman’s point about the statistics on ODs in this country is that psychedelics, specifically Ayahuasca (orally active DMT) and Psilocybin Mushrooms, have been shown through scientific research as well as loads of anecdotal evidence to be promising potential treatments for addiction and alcoholism. So in that sense, psychedelic medicines, once widely available for ceremonial and therapeutic use, could serve as an incredibly powerful tool in fighting the overdose crisis we have on our hands, a tool needed now more than ever due to the increasingly prevalent use by dealers of fentanyl and xylazine to adulterate their drug supply so as to maximize profits.

  • I watched your episode on micro-dosing mushrooms and although I have never done it I did have some comments. Mental illness is simply falling through the cracks in this country. I have a BSN and for 14 years have been caring for patients with severe mental illness in a Nursing Home governed under the division of aging (the average age of these patients is maybe 40-50) as these ill people have no where else to go. We get no extra training and the patients have no Psychiatrist to adjust their meds & b/c they are governed under the division of aging the PCPs are forced to continue doing GDR’s, causing these poor people to become so ill. I say severe b/c these patient could not function in society with the care offered anywhere close to my hometown. My point following the show is this: you mention ” Masking doesn’t resolve the real issue.” I am sorry but that was laughable. My patients NEVER get to the bottom of their “real” issues and I would love to have you spend one day in my facility seeing what is truly happening to people with mental illness. These people will never have good counseling, meditation, inpatient care, & they certainly have no P&P Center available to them. I see these horrible s/e causing extrapyramidal effects but still can not get an oral THC med for a patient with tremors so severe they weigh 90 pounds. I guess it just sounds like you feel this whole world can afford top notch care and Tx and you will not even explore the thought of these other meds. Studies or no studies, look at the terrible s/e these approved psych meds are already causing.

  • i hear a lot of good stories on mushrooms, unfortunately mine isn’t with mushrooms. Mines is with DMT, and it wasn’t a lot, just a small hit, and made me realize psychedelics are a lot stronger than i thought they were. I got heavy, felt the air leave my body, felt my mind expand in a weird way that i just somehow can’t explain, and the only thing that kept me grounded in the first couple of seconds was that this was only a 10 minute drug, and it only lasted like 3 minutes from the small hit i did, but then after like 10 seconds i felt a wave of peace so reassuring so euphoric so cliche but yea, I can’t do it again cause it’s illegal in arizona

  • The only entry drugs are illegal. Grew up in a meth house and outright all the kids I seen coming to get weed, ended up with harder stuff pushed on them. Not sure about all the psychology of it, but it’s definite a way it happens escalation/gateway/entry wise. My buddies and I were all drunks, so we didn’t need to buy weed etc from those types, so didn’t talk to them/get offered anything harder.

  • Ha! There are persons in Calif who believe they are new discovers, they believe the mushrooms are new discovery for getting what they want, claim to need. I’m 70 yrs & lived the psychedelic hippie era, remember when my friends first got high on weed. The smell of weed I’m allergic to, makes me vomit. Never did mushrooms. So, Prince Harry leaves his family & travels to have a good time with special friends where they enjoy mushrooms. I’ve witnessed the dangers of illegal drugs, my cousin & my nephew committed suicide while on them. I’ll never do that as I have people who depend me on to be sober & alive for them.
