Can A Sorcerer Use Two Spells To Focus?

Twinned spells allow sorcerers to cast a spell on two separate targets simultaneously, but not all spells can be twinned. To do this, sorcerers must spend sorcery points equal to the spell’s level. Twinned spells do not create two spells, but rather allow sorcerers to hit more than one person with the same spell, like slow spells or multi-target spells.

Twin Cast is the lone exception to the rule, as it does not cast the spell on a second target. The metamagic just adds a second target. Concentrating on the spell doesn’t do anything except maintain the difficult terrain, which means that you get almost all of the spell’s effects in one turn.

Sorcerers have the Twinned Spell feature, which allows them to cast a spell on two targets. However, this has a rather inconsistent and broken interaction with Concentration spells. Twinned spells can be Twinned, such as Haste, Witchbolt, and Hunters. Concentration spells can be Twinned, but only one spell is being cast, but you are affecting two targets. This is the same as concentration; you don’t get two concentration checks.

Be prepared to let your sorcerer re-pick a metamagic if you rule that they can’t twin concentration spells. Twin Spell with Witch Bolt will break concentration immediately after casting, so it’s only useful if you intend to use it for a single target.

In summary, twinned spells allow sorcerers to cast a spell on two separate targets, but not all spells can be twinned. Twin spell metamagic simply changes a spell that targets one creature, but only one spell is being cast, and you are affecting two targets.

This can occur subsequent to the casting of the other spell, thereby designating the subsequent round as the lethargic round.

  • Extended mage armor: It’s actually a great strategy for divine souls. As a divine soul, you can grab spiritual weapon to weaponise your bonus action, twin spell for twin cantrips as your action and then extend, not only for extended mage armor before rest but also extended AID before rest! Not to mention since Tasha’s, aura of vitality is now a cleric spell. So, extended aura of vitality will do a total of 40d6 over two minutes.

  • Not much of a tactic, but I’ve only rolled up a Sorcerer once; Divine Soul. It felt great when more than one party member went down and got them both back up with a twinned bonus action Healing Word. And twinning a good concentration spell such as Phantasmal Force, making the two targeted creatures see each other as enemies is kinda hilarious to watch them fight each other.

  • The way i would rule twin spell is any spell that is only capable at targetting one creature the moment you cast the spell can be twinned. So i personally would not allow scorching ray cause you are capable of hitting up to 3 creatures I would allow dragon breath cause at the moment you are casting it you are targetting just one creature with the ability to use dragon breath. That they can target more creatures with the ability is part of the spell effect after it was cast

  • Twinning Earthen Grasp is not possible because the target is a 5-foot unoccupied space, not a creature. One could argue that the hand can target a creature once it is summoned, but the spell target is actually a space, not a creature. 🥸 If you allow Maximillian’s, then the player could also bargain for twinned Bigby’s as well, which shouldn’t be possible.

  • Quicken is very important to have early. You absolutely must have it at level 7 so you can quicken polymorph on yourself and then attack as a giant ape. Before that, you will use quicken to turn a combat around by doing something silly such as feed a teamate a healing potion to bring them up from unconcious and then thunderstep with them away

  • Imo, as soon as a spell has the ability to target multiple creatures (whether you do so or not is irrelevant), twin spell is no longer valid. So eldritch blast is fine until 5th level for example, as soon as you get multiple rays it can target mutplie creatures. This is the same for magic missile and scorching ray.

  • It’s not necessarily a “Sorcerer Exclusive”, but if you know an ambush or dangerous situation is coming up, casting Jump in advance and having a fire source on your person (I always have a lit pipe with my Sorc), you can cast the Smoke option in Pyrotechnics and then use the jump option to completely clear the area in a single leap, leaving enemies behind. Guess twinning it on two other members of your party and letting them go first with the fire source could be a cool Sorc only version of the trick.

  • I think distand spell is a good tool for low level play because it gives you more options to deal with enemies at different ranges without having to pick spells specifically for their long range. Keep those limited slots for exactly the spells you want, and make them work even if the enemy it a bit too far, or you don’t want to get too close. Good article, thanks!

  • Don’t want to be the annoying rules lawyer but since minor illusion specifies that the object can’t be bigger than 5 foot cube it might be difficult to use it in combat effectively … so if your DM is strict with that you might want to use that action for a damage dealing cantrip, depending on what role you play in the adventuring party.

  • Although this depends heavily on the nature of the campaign and the composition of the party, I still think heightened spell is a solid choice for a sorcerer’s first two metamagic options. There are some solid first and second level CC and save-or-suck spells like Hold Person or Suggestion. Yeah, it does take up all three of the sorcerer’s SPs, but when you really need to temporarily take out an enemy, it’s a great choice.

  • Flaming Sphere is great use of your action economy early on if you don’t want to spend a lot points on quicken. It offers some battlefield control by forcing enemies to reposition or take damage, and sometimes giving allies opportunity attack. Not to Mention you can ram it into a creature once per turn as part of the bonus action move. Plus I feel it can still be useful at later levels, but is probably out classed by a better concentration spells that 3rd level spells and higher

  • What about weapons? A l.crossbow with 14/16 dex a good alternative? As wild magic sorcerer does mage armor is less attractive cause pot. effects happen at irrelevant moments? Is it worth to ho for high dex so i dont need to go for lots (mage armor. shield & misty step/mirror image) of known defensives early?

  • Mage Hand requires a separate Action to utilize from the Action taken to summon it, unless you are an Arcane Trickster. Therefore you could not Quicken a spell, cast Mage Hand, and then deliver a potion all on the same turn. You could Quicken cast Mage Hand as a Bonus Action, though, and then deliver a potion as an Action. This actually might be a good use of these resources if an ally is dying.
