Can Aarakocra Use Flight To Cast Spells?

Aarakocra characters can cast Levitate at 3rd level and fly by 5th, while Druids can wildshape into birds at 8th level. Spider-climb is available by 2nd or 3rd level for most spellcasters. However, flying creatures have no cover and can be attacked by ranged or spell-caster enemies. Once a wizard gets the fly spell (as early as level 5), the aarakocra is no longer special.

A 20th-level wizard can fly for a maximum of 190 minutes using every usable spell slot + Arcane Recovery + Signature Spells. They can use weapons and cast spells while flying, provided they have the necessary abilities or resources. They can engage in aerial combat, utilizing ranged weapons or a broom with no limit to use per day or duration of casting.

The Aarakocra race is generally the central catalyst of arguments, as they have the largest starting flight speed at 50 ft. The rules specifically state that they can fly so long as they are not wearing medium or heavy armour. However, they basically have nothing but flying, so if you nerf flying further, be sure to compensate with additional racial skills.

Some magical flight, such as a fly spell, don’t have this restriction. A 20th-level wizard could fly for a maximum of 190 minutes using every usable spell slot + Arcane Recovery + Signature Spells.

An Aarakocra Wizard can take +2 in Intelligence and +1 in Constitution, which is an ideal start for a Wizard. Even creatures that require continual action to fly, such as birds, learn to sleep aloft on the Elemental Plane of Air.

  • I loved the mechanics from weapon traits for natural weapons and dive attack, I will certainly add them as well. My personal nerf was dividing by half the speed if they wear light armor as this is also heavy for them and to make them squishier through AC, however that is not much penalty for sorcerers, wizards and monks (barbarians not as much because unarmored defense only gives higher AC than medium armor if you roll realy good stats) so I think that I will give a penalty of 1 HP for every level that is not on a class that has no armor profficiency or that has unarmored defense.

  • im gonna make an aarakocra character that chooses to clip his flight feathers in penance. doing so would limit his flight time and height severely, forcing him to mostly remain on the ground and only using flight when he absolutely has to. Id image hed also have some fall damage cushion. Id say half of the normal fall damage would be fair.

  • I have 2 fixes for flying. Give them base 20 flight speed and add or subtract 10ft based on your strength modifier, this would force spellcasters to take a dump stat and force thrown weapons over ranged weapons. My other fix is dropping it to 30 and having the wings attach to the arms like sirens in ixalan so they need free hands to fly keeping it as an exploratory ability only, limits spellcasting to vocal only,, also gives them a reason to use talons. I also gave both versions keen senses and -1 to con bc birds have thinner bones to fly.

  • You forgot broom of flying, uncommon, 50ft fly speed, no attunement. And I don’t have an issue with flight. If the world has flying creatures as common things, then the world has adapted to deal with it (lots of monsters fly even without PC racial flight). I give the opponents ways they’ve adapted to deal with flying creatures. And if there’s flying party members and the rest feel nerfed, they can have a broom. And it’s only a “problem” in big wide open spaces. I let the players have their fun, but still make it a challenge, and occasionally giving them stuff they can feel like bad asses and cake walk.

  • I am kinda a noob of the game so, as an Aaracokra ranger, what i proposed to my DM was simply to consider flying actions at the first levels kinda like a fly pell: doing so, i can fly whenever i want at full speed (50 ft) spending a spell slot; this ‘flying spell’ has increased duration from lv1 to lv2 slots and require concentrantion as well. For example a level 5 ranger has 4 lv1 slots and 2 lv2 slots, which give him the opportunity to fly a fair ammount of times, but spending slots he could use for other useful spells. As the ranger levels up, he gains more spell slots which directly increase his flying actions capability. We still have to decide at which level my ranger will learn to fly with no limitations (no spell slots). What do you think about this solution?
