Can Aoo Be Taken With Pathfinder Spells?

AoO (Action of Opportunity) is a reaction that occurs before the triggering action completes, not after it’s done or after a single action is spent. It can be triggered by failing a concentration check or using a spell with a ranged touch attack. To avoid an AoO, a character must cast defensively and pass a concentration check.

When casting a spell, using a Spell-Like Ability, or reading a scroll within a threatened area, a character automatically attempts to cast defensively to avoid an AoO. In Pathfinder: Kingmaker, the system will take the first attack of opportunity available. Casting a spell with a casting time of 1 swift action doesn’t provoke attacks of opportunity.

All actual spells can trigger an AoO, but casting a spell without casting defensively will result in one attack of opportunity from each single enemy in the player’s threat range. If a spell is cast while in the threat range of an opponent, the game forces the player to make a critical hit, which doesn’t count toward Attacks of Opportunity.

Spell-like abilities (Sp) work like casting a spell in that they require concentration and provoke attacks of opportunity. Casting defensively won’t provoke an AoO, but if you fail the Concentration check, your spell fizzles because you’re too focused on avoiding attacks. AoO allows you to make an attack, but it does not allow you to cast a spell.

The DC to avoid an AoO is 15 +x2 spell level, making low-level spells easier to use in melee. In WotR, if Acrobatics (Mobility) is used, the DC is 15 +x2 spell level.

How do you avoid AoO in Pathfinder?

Pathfinder rules allow characters to move 5 feet safely without risk of AoO (Avoidance of Occurrence) without a roll, but they must perform a “5-Foot Step” instead of a normal move. This step allows for Full-Round actions after or before the move. If an enemy has a melee Reach longer than 5 feet, leaving the threat area is the risk. When casting a spell, using a Spell-Like Ability, or reading a scroll within a threatened area, players automatically attempt to cast defensively to avoid an AoO.

The Concentration check (Casting defensively) rolls D20 + caster level + casting modifier (Int, Wis, Chr), with the DC to avoid an AoO being 15 +x2 spell level. In WotR, if Acrobatics (Mobility) is toggled on, a second chance at avoiding the AoO is given. If hit by the AoO, a Concentration check is performed to see if the spell/scroll/ability is successful, otherwise the spell slot, scroll, or use is lost.

Can you cast the same spell in AOS?

A spell may only be cast by one friendly wizard per turn, unless it bears the “UNLIMITED” keyword. It is not possible for the same wizard to cast the same spell more than once in succession, even if it is designated as “UNLIMITED.”

Do spell-like abilities provoke attacks of opportunity?

Spell-like abilities can be used defensively to avoid attacks of opportunity, but they can be disrupted like a spell. They are subject to spell resistance and can be dispelled by dispel magic. They have a limit on their usage, while those that can be used at will have no limit. For creatures with spell-like abilities, a designated caster level defines the difficulty of dispelling their effects and any level-dependent variables.

The caster level doesn’t affect which spell-like abilities the creature has, but sometimes it is lower than the level a spellcasting character would need to cast the spell of the same name. If no caster level is specified, the caster level is equal to the creature’s Hit Dice. The saving throw against a spell-like ability is not affected.

Can you cast a spell while grappled Pathfinder?

It should be noted that spells can only be cast while grappling or pinned if they lack any somatic components and possess at least one material component. Nevertheless, a concentration check (DC 10 + grappler’s CMB + spell level) is necessary to prevent the spell from being lost.

What provokes Attacks of Opportunity Pathfinder?

Attacks of opportunity can be provoked by moving out of a threatened square or performing certain actions within a threatened square. Moving out usually provokes attacks from threatening opponents, but avoiding such attacks can be done using the 5-foot step and withdraw Action. Performing a distracting act in a threatened square can also provoke attacks as it diverts attention from the battle. However, even actions that typically provoke attacks may have exceptions.
