The Apple TV’s “Learn Remote” functionality does not work immediately when using the LG Magic Remote. However, the LG TV has a feature that allows its remote to serve as the universal remote of various inputs, such as selecting DVD. You can use a supported TV or receiver remote, a network-based remote for home-control systems, or an infrared remote (commonly known as a universal remote) to control the LG TV.
To pair your LG Magic remote to an Apple TV device, you need at least an Apple TV 4K and run Universal Remote on the LG TV. If your LG TV is a 2018 or later model, the LG Magic Remote is compatible with Apple TV+ and allows for both motion control and voice. The LG AN-MR21GA Magic Remote has possibly more shortcut buttons than any other major TV brand, with a six-pack of buttons on the lower end of the remote.
To set up universal control on the Magic Remote, connect your Apple TV to the port you connected it to. Use an LG DVD player, remote type 9, and go to your Apple TV and select add a remote. To teach the remote buttons, keep clicking the button over and over until the remote will learn it. If you hold any number on the remote keypad, it will add the current input as a shortcut and work if you are in Apple TV.
If your LG Magic Remote (MR21GA) is no longer controlling your Apple TV, try setting up universal control on the Magic Remote and turning on HDMI-CEC/SIMPLINK. Full control of Apple TV4K from Magic Remote now works.
The Apple TV is officially not supported by LG (per their phone support) and Apple appears as a valid make when selecting a remote type. You can control an LG TV with an Apple TV remote using the LG ThinQ app or Apple’s TV Remote feature for seamless smart home integration.
