Last Supper painting is a symbol of Christianity for most of the world, don’t tell me the author of that Paris Olympics opening piece was so dumb not to see how it would come off to Christians and most common folk who don’t have a degree in art. Seems more like a lame loophole excuse, regardless what it really was based on.
There are very few surviving examples of paintings from ancient Greece for a number of reasons. Leonardo da Vinci’s mural, The Last Supper, painted 1495-98, IS NOT a replication of any painting, Greek or otherwise. According to Dutch art historian Walther Schoonenberg, “The tableau vivant or ‘living painting’ in the opening ceremony of Paris 2024 was of The Feast of the Gods, by Jan van Bijlert from 1635,” Schoonenberg said on X. The painting might be echoing Leonardo’s mural, but it too is not based on any ancient Greek painting. The scene from the Paris Olympics actually did not mean to represent or was not inspired by the last Supper, but rather by the Olympic Gods, hence Olympics. If anyone knows history, Olympic Games were introduced every four years in Ancient Greece and during that time wars between different Greek city-states were frozen/banned.

Despite expecting that it would create a firestorm they ran with it. The purpose of art is to attract positive attention, but negative attention is much better than none, so the result was certainly mission accomplished.
The “Feast of the Gods” paintings that the artist claims to have been referencing (and I don’t particularly doubt that, as they’d be a lot more thematically relevant,) as best as I understand, came from 200 years afterwards. If there was an earlier one that Last Supper was based on, I can’t find it.

To be specific, the scene at the Olympic opening was inspired by the painting “the feast of the gods” by dutch painter Jan van Bijlert which is posterior to Da Vinci’s Last Supper by a couple of centuries. So not a greek painting, but a dutch painting of a scene from greek mythology. Which means that in the 17th century you could use the motif of the last supper to represent a Dionysian banquet without any bigot freaking out about it, and here we are 5 centuries later.
I think just saying The Last Supper painting was based on another painting so it couldnt be a reference to The Last Supper is a bit opaque. Surely there was no one involved in the tableau who couldnt foresee any possible allusion to The Last Supper. I had a discussion with my brother, who is a pastor. He was very upset about the Olympics depiction. I told him that Jesus wouldn’t even recognize The Last Supper was about him and his apostles.
