Can You Cast Smite Spells On Your Horse?

While mounted on your steed, you can cast any spell that targets only you and your steed. However, smite spells do not target “only you”, meaning your steed does not gain the benefits of those spells. The Find Steed spell states that while mounted on your steed, you can make any spell you cast that targets only you also target your steed.

Smite spells target you as a buff, but they do not target you. They are cast from a range of self, but you are not the target of the spell itself. Staggering smite and thunderous smite are the only ones whose possible secondary effect doesn’t last for the spell’s duration; the former lasts until the end of the spell.

The RAI clearly intended that any spell you’ve cast on yourself will also be cast on your Steed, so a Smite-type spell that you carry a charge on would be considered a Smite-type spell. PHB’s Find Steed requires the shared spell to only target you, which explicitly means you can’t do Range: Self (X Feet) spells like Cone of.

Find Steed is a 2nd-level paladin spell capable of summoning a steed or mount, including a warhorse, pony, camel, elk, or mastiff. The steed is intelligent and can summon any spell that targets only you. The only way to share a Smite spell with a Summoned Steed is if something is not defined as a “Target” (caster or creature being struck by the spell).

Blinding smite and wrathful smite impose a significant status effect for the duration, but the save can be repeated each turn. Blinding Smite has a range of self and refers to the creature you attack as a target.

In summary, while mounted on your steed, you can cast any spell that targets only you and your steed. However, smite spells do not target you, and no offense spells can be cast on the Steed.
