Can You Cast Spells Quickly Using Your Hands?

Quick-Play Spell Cards in Yu-Gi-Oh! can be activated from the player’s hand at any phase of their turn, and either player can activate Set Quick-Play Spell Cards during any phase in either player’s turn, except during the turn they are Set. However, players cannot activate Quick-Play Spells directly from their hand on their opponent’s turn, unless a card effect states otherwise.

Quick-Play Spells can also be Set from the hand during the Main Phase of the player’s turn, but cannot be activated in the turn it is set. As Spell Speed 2 cards, players may activate Quick-Play Spell Cards from their hand at any time during their own turn (except the Damage Step, unless ruled otherwise), but cannot activate them from their hand during the opponent’s turn.

In Yu-Gi-Oh!, quick-play spells work similarly to instants in Magic: The Gathering. Players can play them from their hand at any time during their turn, but if they set a Quick-Play spell, it becomes a “trap” until your turn ends. On your opponent’s turn, it must be set first, much like a Trap card.

Players can activate Quick-Play Spell Cards from their hand at any phase of their turn, and either player can activate Set Quick-Play Spell Cards during any phase. However, they cannot activate them from their hand during the opponent’s turn, except during the draw phase or standby.

In summary, quick-play spells in Yu-Gi-Oh! can be activated from the player’s hand at any point in their turn, but they cannot be activated during the opponent’s turn.

  • I’m not going to lie – one of the changes they have made in 5e to spells that I personally love was combining a lot of similar spells into one single one (and the ability to upcast spells with higher level spell slots and many spells get naturally stringer doing that, so no more “Cure minor wounds”, “Cure wounds”, etc. now it is only “Cure wounds”, but the caster can use higher level slots to cast it to make it more powerful). I remembered looking at the description of Bigby’s hand in the 5e Players handbook and it is one 5th level spell, that allows you to cast either of the hand forms, so it provides quite a bit of flexibility (and the hand actually has AC, but 5e AC works differently than old editions, so it can’t be copied directly). BTW its damage in 5e is quite close to your homebrew 😀 It deals 4d8 damage if cast as a 5th lvl spell and adds 2d6 for each spell lvl above 5th.
