Can You Use The Magic Keyboard With An Apple Pencil?

The Magic Keyboard for iPad allows users to attach an Apple Pencil without any issues. The iPad magnetically attaches to the keyboard, leaving the charging pad for the pencil fully available. The Magic Keyboard has a Track Pad, not a mouse, which is useful for taking notes and sending handwritten notes to OneNote. To keep the Apple Pencil secure, an OEM Microsoft Surface Pencil Loop can be used.

Both the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil attach magnetically to the iPad while it’s in the Magic Keyboard and provide a passthrough connection for the Smart Connector. However, older versions of the Pencil are not compatible with the same iPad models that use the Magic Keyboard. The new iPad does not support the second-generation Apple Pencil or the Magic Keyboard but is supported by the “Magic Keyboard Folio” and the first-generation.

The Magic Keyboard seems designed for people who don’t care about the other important iPad Pro accessory – the Apple Pencil. To use the Apple Pencil while using the Magic Keyboard, a compatible back cover must be used. The Smart Keyboard Folio offers a typing experience and easy flipping over for writing with the Apple Pencil.

However, it is not possible to use an Apple Pencil with both the Magic Keyboard for iPad and the Magic (folio) Keyboard. To add either or both, users must contact Apple and provide serial numbers and purchase information. Without these details, the iPad will not be covered.

  • *My simple method* (nothing extra required) 1. grip ipad on bottom corners (which are hanging in the air) 2. drag it down and fit it on the edge of the keyboard (between the spacebar and touchpad); there’s a small indent and it fits just perfectly 3. when you’re done drag it back up Perfectly stable, no need to flip anything, no need for phone, no need for accessories, etc. Only caveat is that ipad still seems to think you have keyboard even if you cant really type in this position but thats not a problem for me; it’s just so fast to switch back and forth between it anyway. Bonus: Do this in bed if you have a lot warm sheets and other things in the way and the “V” shape caused by angling tablet towards you in this configuration is a lot easier for holding the tablet when you just want to watch youtube or movies (it just works better then a flat stand). *For very light drawing needs* (signature, etc) 1. just pull the entire keyboard (with ipad in its normal position on it) towards you so it’s as close as possible and then do your drawing 2. push it back into comfortable typing position when done *For heavy drawing* (ie. you just want to draw and nothing else) 1. GET A IPAD STAND (very heavy thick metal ones! 45 degree angle or HIGHER) with arm that pushes forward (1 pivot is fine, but the longer the arm the better! you want at least half ipad with in length minimum). 2. Place stand base on the table on the EDGE (if not even partially outside it) 3. Place ipad on stand so it’s lifted up from table at least half it’s size (or around there) and floating in front of you at a confortable 30 or 45 angle (ie.
