The Extort trigger occurs when a spell is placed on the stack and paid its costs. This ability is on the stack above the originally cast spell, but can be countered. When you cast a spell, you may pay a single white or black mana to trigger the extort ability. However, you cannot pay an extra (W/B) when you cast an extort spell.
Extort transforms spells into sources of damage, and every time a player casts a spell and pays the extort cost, they can make their opponent lose life. You can only extort once every time you cast a spell, as Extort says “you may pay W/B” not “you may pay W/B any amount of times”.
Extort is primarily found on black and white cards and allows you to drain your opponents’ life while gaining life yourself. Countering a spell does not negate the abilities it triggered. A player doesn’t have a chance to cast a counterspell until after finishing casting their spell.
A spell that is countered is put into the graveyard instead of doing its effect, and it is essentially negated. Counterspells or permission spells may or may not negate spells. My Body as a Shield does not negate spells, but you can negate its effect.
In summary, the Extort trigger occurs when a spell is placed on the stack and paid its costs. Players can only extort once per spell per extort trigger, and countering a spell does not negate the abilities it triggered.
