Sybill Trelawney, a Seer and descendant of the renowned Seer Cassandra Trelawney, taught Divination at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. She was the first in her family to possess the Inner Eye gift since Cassandra. Sybill struggled to find work due to her ancestry, as she was unable to predict mortal peril for Harry Potter.
During a lesson, Sybill made several seemingly ridiculous predictions and two real prophecies about Neville Longbottom’s grandmother. Neville was unsure if his grandmother would be well, but she predicted that she would be ill. However, this prediction never happened. Many of her predictions were false, but some were true.
Trelawney survived the Second Wizarding War and continued to teach until the 2010s, continuing her tradition of predicting the deaths of her students. One of the most interesting predictions she made was the idea that when thirteen people dine together, the first to rise is the first to die. Professor of Divination, Sibyll, seemed to have a talent for predicting danger, death, and other unfortunate events.
In the Harry Potter films and books, Sybill made several seemingly ridiculous predictions and two real prophecies about her grandmother. Although most of her predictions were implied to be nonsense, they often fulfilled. One of the most interesting predictions Trelawney made was the idea that when thirteen people dine together, the first to rise is the first to die.
Despite her clumsiness, Sybill Trelawney’s predictions and her ability to predict danger and death are not considered genuinely clairvoyant.

Harry is spooked by Professor Trelawney’s Prophecy!
Was the prophecy about Neville?
The Lost Prophecy in Harry Potter reveals Voldemort’s motives for trying to kill Harry as a baby and foreshadows his defeat of the Dark Lord. The prophecy, created by Sybil Trelawney, states that the one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord would be born at the end of July to parents who had defied Voldemort three times. Both Harry and Neville Longbottom fit this description, but Voldemort chose to apply the prophecy to Harry. The Prophecy is introduced in the Order of the Phoenix, where the Death Eaters attempt to obtain it to deliver it to their master, Lord Voldemort.
Harry questions the Death Eaters about the Prophecy’s importance, and Lucius Malfoy responds with “Haven’t you ever wondered why the Dark Lord tried to kill you as a baby?” This revelation reveals Voldemort’s motivations for attempting to kill Harry as a baby and foreshadows his defeat.
Was Professor Trelawney ever wrong?
Professor Trelawney, a renowned psychic, made numerous minor predictions, including the deaths of students that never came true. Her predictions seemed to be based on her Inner Eye, possibly causing her to appear all-knowing. For instance, she told Neville Longbottom to take a blue cup after breaking his first one, which Neville did. She also predicted Neville would be late for his next Divination class. She warned Parvati Patil to beware of a red-headed man, who sat behind her.
Parvati and her sister Padma, who were dating, ignored them at the Yule Ball. Two years later, Ron started dating Padma’s best friend Lavender Brown, who subsequently ignored Parvati. She also predicted a flu in February and herself losing her voice. These predictions were made by Professor Trelawney, who was a renowned psychic.
Why did Dumbledore let Trelawney stay?
Professor Trelawney was granted the position of Tessomancy after making a prophecy that impressed Dumbledore. Divination was an elective subject available in third-year students, and students studied various methods to scry information about the future, including tea dregs, crystal balls, visions, Astrology charts, smoke patterns, dreams, tarot cards, and interpretation of prophecies. Guides and textbooks allowed students to discern or translate the meaning of observed symbols. The true purpose of the prophecy was to protect Trelawney from Lord Voldemort.
Why did Hermione not like Professor Trelawney?
Hermione Granger has a fixed mindset, which she has developed by giving up on things she doesn’t believe she is naturally good at. She quit Divination, believing Professor Trelawney was a fraud and the subject was useless. Hermione also gave up on Quidditch, only getting on a broom a handful of times after one lesson. This approach is flawed as it is impossible to be good at everything the first time.
To achieve success in any area, one needs to develop a growth mindset, which believes that intelligence, essay writing, exam performance, maths, and Quidditch are changeable and can be improved with effort, smart strategies, self-belief, and supportive allies.
The flaw in the narrative is that Hermione only had one Quidditch lesson in first year, and she couldn’t learn it out of a book. To achieve success in any area, one needs to develop a growth mindset, which believes that intelligence, essay writing, exam performance, maths, and Quidditch are all changeable and can be improved with effort, smart strategies, self-belief, and supportive allies.
Is Harry or Neville the chosen one?
The prophecy was not just based on birth date, but also on other conditions that both Harry and Neville fulfilled. Harry was marked as his equal by Voldy, and he became the chosen one. The prophecy stated that the one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord would be born to those who have thrice defied him, and born as the seventh month dies. The Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not. The chosen one would have parents who had defied Voldemort thrice, and only Neville’s and Harry’s parents had defied Voldemort thrice in the entire area.
Why was Cedric’s death so sad?
The crowd celebrated the return of Cedric, but upon realizing his death, they realized that he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Cedric’s death was tragic, but the disregard for his life made it even more devastating. He was the epitome of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, and he became collateral damage.
In the Harry Potter movies, Sirius Black’s death feels particularly cruel, especially towards Harry. For years, everyone believed Sirus had betrayed his friends and gotten them killed, a false claim that he had to suffer for in prison. Harry learned the truth about his godfather in Prisoner of Azkaban, but he had to go into hiding. Despite their communication, they never lived together as they had hoped.
During the Battle of the Department of Mysteries, Sirius duelled with his cousin, Bellatrix Lestrange, and she fired a curse that caused him to fall backwards into the Veil, killing him. After being framed for murder, spending twelve years wrongfully imprisoned in Azkaban, and the rest of his life in hiding, Sirus’ story came to an unfair end.
Did Trelawney predict Cedric’s death?
In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Trelawney makes two predictions: one at the beginning of the year and another before Christmas break. Both predictions come true, with the first prediction predicting Harry’s entrance into the Triwizard Tournament and his meeting with Voldemort in the flesh. The second prediction accurately predicts Cedric’s death, as she was standing next to him when he was murdered and brought Cedric’s body back to Hogwarts.
In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Trelawney does not make any true predictions, but she warns Umbridge of grave danger under duress, possibly due to Umbridge goingading the Centaurs into chasing her down. The entire book revolves around Voldemort obtaining the prophecy made sixteen years earlier, which is heard in its entirety at the end of the book.
The prophecy states that the one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh month dies, and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not. Both must die at the hand of the other, as neither can live while the other survives.
Did Professor Trelawney predict Dumbledore’s death?
The Harry Potter series, a beloved fantasy world, is a popular and beloved series that began with J. K. Rowling’s debut novel, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The series tells the story of “the boy who lived” and Lord Voldemort, the darkest wizard. The popularity of the novels led to a big-screen adaptation, with Harry and friends taking over film from 2001 to 2011, with the final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, divided into two movies.
The movie saga was as loyal to the source material as possible, but there were many characters, spells, events, and other elements that had to be left behind for different reasons. Some of these cut moments live only in the books, such as the Christmas dinner in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Sybill Trelawney, a professor of Divination at Hogwarts, made prophecies concerning Lord Voldemort and had the power to defeat him. Despite her eccentric personality, her talents as a Seer were often put into question, and many of her predictions turned out to be accurate.
Some of Sybil Trelawney’s superstitions, such as predicting Albus Dumbledore’s death during the Christmas dinner in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, turned out to have some truth to them.
Why did Trelawney say Umbridge was in danger?
In her first lesson with Harry’s class, Trelawney foresees Neville Longbottom breaking her teacup, but it is argued that the power of suggestion makes him shatter it in nervousness. She also tells Lavender Brown that her pet rabbit will die on 16th October, which Hermione Granger logically points out is not an unexpected death. Trelawney also tells the class that one of them will “leave forever” around Easter, which turns out to be Hermione dropping her subject and Dolores Umbridge, who is determined to get her fired, by telling her she is in “grave danger” to save her job.
Neville breaks two teacups, and Sirius Black, who the students fear would break into Hogwarts, manages to do so on 16th October. Hermione leaves her class, and Umbridge is attacked by a herd of centaurs. Trelawney’s fortune-teller practices involve more than just guesswork, as she enters an entranced state during a job interview with Albus Dumbledore at the Hog’s Head and makes her first prophecy. Dumbledore explains that Voldemort’s actions make the prophecy come true and lead to his undoing, as he believes Harry has the “power to vanquish the Dark Lord” and casts the killing curse at him, marking him as his equal.
Were Trelawney’s predictions correct?
Sybill Trelawney, a Seer and a descendant of the renowned Seer Cassandra Trelawney, made numerous prophecies of events that came true. Her most famous prophecy was about the defeat of Lord Voldemort by Harry Potter’s hand. Sybill struggled to find work due to her ancestry and began making false predictions. In 1980, she arranged a meeting with Albus Dumbledore to acquire the position of Divination professor at Hogwarts School. Dumbledore declined her offer, but later gave her first prophecy after going into a trance.
Prophecies were usually given by a Seer involuntarily in a trance-like state, with them speaking in a different voice and not remembering the event. They were placed in spin-glass objects called Prophecy Records and placed in the Hall of Prophecy in the Department of Mysteries. Prophecies were protected with anti-theft spells, one of which induced madness. Only those who the prophecy referred to had the authority to move them, but once they had, the prophecy could be stolen without consequences. Sybill Trelawney made two prophecies, both of which came true.
Is Trelawney a true seer?
Snape’s decision to turn on Voldemort and help Dumbledore was made possible by a prophecy made by Sybill Trelawney during her job interview with Dumbledore. This prophecy resulted in Voldemort killing James and Lily Potter and Harry Potter becoming “The Chosen One”. Sybill’s powers as a Seer were proven during her job interview, which is considered one of the most important moments in the Harry Potter saga. This prophecy changed the course of many people’s lives, including Snape, Harry, Voldemort, and Dumbledore.
Without this prophecy, Snape might have remained a Death Eater, Harry could have grown up with his parents, and Dumbledore would have devoted his life to preparing Harry for his fate. Sybill Trelawney proved her Seerness through her job interview, earning her a spot as a Hogwarts professor.

The book is even more creepy. “It will happen tonight. The Dark Lord lies alone and friendless, abandoned by his followers. His servant has been chained these twelve years. Tonight, before midnight… the servant will break free and set out to rejoin his master. The Dark Lord will rise again with his servant’s aid, greater and more terrible than ever he was. Tonight… before midnight… the servant… will set out… to rejoin… his master…”
It was phrased very differently in the book, but frankly I prefer this version. Firstly, it’s way more dramatic. Second, it’s more concise. Lastly, it conveys the same information, but maybe a little more vaguely. Here’s the original text followed by the script: “It will happen tonight. The Dark Lord lies alone and friendless, abandoned by his followers. His servant has been chained these twelve years. Tonight, before midnight… the servant will break free and set out to rejoin his master. The Dark Lord will rise again with his servant’s aid, greater and more terrible than ever he was. Tonight… before midnight… the servant… will set out… to rejoin… his master…” “He will return tonight. tonight he who betrayed his friends, whose heart wrought with murder shall break free. Innocent blood shall be spilt, and servant and master shall be reunited once moooooore.” Both predict Sirius being exonerated; Pettigrew coming out of hiding to bring Voldemort back; innocent blood (Cedric’s) being spilt; and Voldemort returning.
I saw this the first time and was quite scared but once it was over and she had returned to her old self the feeling of fear was entirely reversed, if you asked me I’d say she was hired by the hogwarts specifically to help harry with this strange self possession ability I don’t even know if she knows she has this power.
Personal Thoughts on Trelawney and Divination as a whole : While Prof.Trelawney is indeed a Seer(Wizards and witches who has the ability to see into the future),it seems that she has little control over her talent, and over time she failed to remember everything when she entered a trance and give out prophecies. Which,in my opinion, the reason why Prof.Trelawney was not a good teacher for this subjects. As for the Divination Class as a whole,it is said that being able to look into the future is quite a rare talent even for wizarding world. Not to mention the Seers might have varied degree of control over their power. I personally doubt this subject should be open to “non-seers.” To me,it is like teaching muggles magic.
Wish she had actually predicted Voldemort’s return. I don’t even understand this prophecy, he will return tonight, like return from where? He was always there, I guess saying return sounded cooler or something, but saying the Dark Lord shall return is such a simple thing to have said, more impactful and makes more sense
