Do Buddhists Accept That Witchcraft Exists?

Buddhist texts acknowledge the existence of witchcraft, but they have either banned or discouraged it. The Vinaya states that if a Bhiksu continues his practice after breaking the precept, he would be expelled. Witchcraft, from a Buddhist perspective, encourages grasping and manifesting desires, which aligns with Buddhist teachings. Buddhism serves as a spice to their witchcraft catalogue, similar to spiritual shopping in America and astrology.

We often believe only Buddha, Bodhisattvas, gods, or fairies have magical or supernatural power. However, ghosts and demons can also possess magical power. Despite research on medieval Chinese Buddhism, the witchcraft role of bird totems in Buddhist history has not received sufficient attention. This paper aims to fill this gap by discussing the possibility of being a Buddhist Wiccan.

Witchcraft is about building personal power, which aligns with Buddhist teachings. It also involves learning and respecting nature, which aligns with Buddhist teachings. The history and practice of Buddhist magic are explored, including how magic was used to spread Buddhism, solve problems, and spread Buddhism.

Tibetan Buddhism is a perfect mixture of witchcraft, shamanism, alchemy, astrology, and traditional Buddhist meditation. Buddhist teachings focus on happiness, while witchcraft and other beliefs have no place in the practice or beliefs. Wicca allows for customization to suit one’s belief, and similarities between Wicca and Buddhism include an emphasis on life and respect for all living beings.

Can Buddhists believe in gods?

Buddhists believe that human life is a cycle of suffering and rebirth, with enlightenment (nirvana) allowing one to escape this cycle. Siddhartha Gautama, the first person to reach enlightenment, was born in Nepal and realized the suffering of life. He renounced wealth and adopted the life of a poor beggar, meditating and traveling. Eventually, he settled on the “Middle Way”, a way of life between asceticism and wealth. Gautama achieved enlightenment under the Bodhi tree, and the Mahabodhi Temple in Bihar, India, is now a major Buddhist pilgrimage site.

Buddhists teach about the Four Noble Truths: suffering (dukkha), origin of suffering (samudāya), cessation of suffering (nirodha), and path to the cessation of suffering (magga). They believe in a wheel of rebirth into different bodies connected to karma, which refers to how a person’s actions in their present or past lives can impact their future. Buddhists strive for serenity amid chaos and place a high value on ethical conduct and compassion, reflecting in ideals of service and community.

What is the biggest sin in Buddhism?

The Ānantarika kamma, a serious Buddhist doctrine, is characterized by the act of killing one’s mother, father, Arahant, Tathāgata, and causing schism in the Sangha. Even Amitabha Buddha abandoned hope in his 18th Vow, stating that if a sentient being recites the Buddha’s name ten times but is not reborn in Sukhavati, they will not attain enlightenment. However, there are exceptions for those who have committed the five terrible offenses and vilified the Sublime Dharma, as they cannot be reborn in Sukhavati.

Do Buddhists believe in supernatural things?

Buddhism, a religion, has beliefs that could be considered supernatural, such as rebirth, karma working over multiple lifetimes, heavens and hells, devas and Māras, miracles, merit transfer, and psychic powers. However, Buddhist teachers in the West and Asia did not require faith in unverified beliefs. Instead, they encouraged deep awareness of one’s experiences and beliefs.

Natural Buddhism, which includes teachings free of supernatural ideas, can be considered an equally valid form of Buddhism as supernatural Buddhism. The Book of Eights, an early text that supports a naturalistic approach, is considered an early text that supports a naturalistic approach to Buddhism. As the fourth book in the Sutta Nipata in the Khuddaka Nikāya, the Book of Eights provides a foundation of teachings that does not rely on any ideology or supernatural beliefs. It discourages concern with future lives and wishes for any state of being, and does not mention ending cycles of rebirth as a goal of practice.

What do Buddhist believe in evil?

Buddhists believe that human actions like greed, anger, and ignorance contribute to evil and hinder their spiritual growth. They accept that suffering is a natural part of life and that the Buddha’s teachings, which include the three people he saw leaving his palace, are a reflection of this reality. These teachings were imparted to his first disciples after he was enlightened, and are a summary of the truths he taught about suffering in life.

What does Buddha say about Jesus?

Historian Jerry H. Bentley suggests that Buddhism may have influenced the early development of Christianity, drawing parallels between the births, lives, doctrines, and deaths of Buddha and Jesus. High-level Buddhists have drawn analogies between Jesus and Buddhism, such as the Dalai Lama’s statement in 2001 that Jesus Christ lived previous lives and reached a high state through Buddhist practice. Vietnamese Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh affirmed core Christian beliefs such as the trinity and the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ in his book Living Buddha, Living Christ. Bokin Kim sees Christ as the Buddha Dharmakaya, similar to Gautama, who was just a historical manifestation of the transhistorical Buddha.

There are fundamental differences between Buddhism and Christianity, including their monotheistic nature and rejection of the notion of a Creator God. The Nicene Creed, the most widely used Christian creed, states that “We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible”. However, the notion of theistic creation is generally foreign to Buddhist thought, and the existence of God is a fundamental barrier between the teachings of Christianity and Buddhism.

Mahayana Buddhism expresses belief in the saint-like state of a Bodhisattva, but this differs from the notion of Creator God in Christianity. In general, Buddhism sees empty space as eternal and without a starting point of creation.

Do Buddhists believe in chakras?

Chakras are esoteric ideas and concepts about physiology and psychic centers that emerged across Indian traditions. The belief held that human life exists in two parallel dimensions: the physical body (sthula sarira) and the psychological, emotional, mind, non-physical (sukshma sarira). The subtle body is energy, while the physical body is mass. The psyche or mind plane corresponds to and interacts with the body plane, and the body and the mind mutually affect each other.

The subtle body consists of nadi (energy channels) connected by nodes of psychic energy called chakra. The number of major chakras varied between various traditions, but typically ranged between four and seven. The important chakras are stated in Hindu and Buddhist texts to be arranged in a column along the spinal cord, from its base to the top of the head, connected by vertical channels.

The belief in the chakra system of Hinduism and Buddhism differs from the historic Chinese system of meridians in acupuncture. The chakra relates to the subtle body, wherein it has a position but no definite nervous node or precise physical connection. The tantric systems envision it as continually present, highly relevant, and a means to psychic and emotional energy.

These ideas are not unique to Hindu and Buddhist traditions, but they have overlapping concepts in other cultures in the East and West, known as subtle body, spirit body, esoteric anatomy, sidereal body, and etheric body.

What is forbidden as a Buddhist?

What is forbidden as a Buddhist?

The five precepts, also known as the five rules of training, are the most significant moral system for Buddhist lay people. They are commitments to abstain from killing living beings, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying, and intoxication, and are meant to develop mind and character for progress on the path to enlightenment. These precepts form the basis of various parts of Buddhist doctrine, both lay and monastic.

The precepts have been compared with the Ten Commandments in Abrahamic religions or the ethical codes of Confucianism. They have also been connected with utilitarianist, deontological, and virtue approaches to ethics. However, by 2017, western terminology had mostly been abandoned by scholars. Some scholars argue that the precepts can complement the concept of human rights due to their universal nature.

The five precepts were common in the religious milieu of 6th-century BCE India, but the Buddha’s focus on awareness through the fifth precept was unique. As Buddhism spread to different places and people, the role of the precepts varied. In countries where Buddhism had to compete with other religions, the ritual of undertaking the five precepts developed into an initiation ceremony to become a Buddhist layperson. In countries with little competition, such as Thailand, the ceremony has had little relation to the rite of becoming Buddhist.

Undertaking and upholding the five precepts is based on the principle of non-harming, compassion, and belief in karmic retribution. People keep the precepts for personal development and fear of a bad rebirth.

Does Buddhism believe in magic?

Early Buddhism incorporates magico-religious practices, where both magic and religion engage with supernatural phenomena beyond the natural world. Buddhist ideas about magic can be traced back to the historical Buddha’s supernatural acts, which are commemorated at four of the eight major Buddhist pilgrimage sites in northern India. The Twin Miracle, performed at Śravastī, reveals the Buddha’s complex attitude towards the miraculous.

The Dhammapad-Aṭṭha-kathā, the fullest version of this story, describes a layman suspending a bowl high off the ground and challenging anyone who claimed to have experienced it. This event reveals the Buddha’s complex attitude towards the miraculous and the importance of these ideas in early Buddhism.

Do Buddhists believe in demons?

Buddhists have preserved indigenous religious beliefs and practices, including the presentation of Mara, the manifestation of spiritual evil, in early literature and the decoration of early stupas and entrances to cave temples with local deities. This justified the continuance of the cult of local deities and has been employed in varying degrees in every Buddhist land. A pantheon of minor deities continued to take in new members wherever Buddhism was established.

The Mahayana and Vajrayana traditions welcomed these local deities and admitted some of their cults into the liturgies in honor of buddhas and bodhisattvas. Favored deities include Mahakala, the great black divinity; the mother goddess Hariti; Kuvera, the god of wealth; and Hayagriva, a fierce horse-faced god powerful in driving off unconverted demonic forces.

In Japan, the identification of buddhas and bodhisattvas with indigenous kami (Japanese: “god” or “spirit”) has included both great gods and the kami of local territories. In other cases, local gods and demons have been conquered, converted, and taken into the pantheon or relegated to the periphery. For example, in Tibet, it is believed that Buddhism was established in the 8th century only as a result of the wholesale subjugation of local deities.

What is the unforgivable sin in Buddhism?

What is the unforgivable sin in Buddhism?

The Dhammasangāni identifies five unpardonable sins in Buddhism: matricide, parricide, slaying an Arhat, slaying a Buddha, and causing division among priesthood. However, Buddhists acknowledge cases where committing an act considered sinful is not considered a sin. Sin in Buddhism refers to the evil elements that defile the mind and hinder enlightenment. The term “pāpa, apuñña” (sin) does not have a special connotation in Buddhism, unlike major theistic religions like Christianity, Judaism, or Islam.

In Buddhism, sins are individual actions that contradict the will of God or the Supreme Being. The mind (manas or citta) is considered the most important factor in determining the moral quality of an action. If an individual acts with an evil mind, suffering follows as a consequence.

  • I’m very glad never had busy my mind thinking, if someone made or makes black magic against me. I am just confident enough, no bad action from outside will aproach my being, because the light, the love and the thankfulness for the life in my heart are strong and are my best protectors. I don’t have such a karma to attract those destrutive actions from bad souls outside. I reject everyone and all with any intentions to hurt me, the light inside me is my strongest Guru. I’m very thankful for that! ✨️🙏✨️ May light and love always protect us all! 🌟💖

  • I believe this exist and can be very harmful to a person even to the point of death. But ive always asked, how can a human being have access to such a power to distort and destroy a innocent person(s) life without there knowledge? Shouldn’t the creator automatically intervene if he sees a person under this type of demonic influence? Ive seen alot of people die horrible deaths due to word curses placed on them by witches/warlocks. How is that fair to a sovereign beings existence?

  • Umm, after going through a very serious episode along these lines, I finally (via self diagnosis) realized the essence of what was needed: ie ‘Do not (I repeat,do not)go down the ‘slippery slope pathology of the supernatural, paranormal, occult, black magic, spiritual materialism, et al PTSD in extremis.’ Indeed, as warrior seekers, we must, I humbly feel, become perhaps what we were even before we were born : Planetary Master Heroes -without any sidetracks. TBC. Oh, the humanity! Thanks for the upload. NAMASTE .

  • There are many Vietnam story about this love magic. My father has a friends who he study with him in Vietnam military school during the 80s. His friend has a girlfriend in a mountain region of North Vietnam. However, when he decides to break up with her in later years and came back to the city after his services time is over in the army, he always get unknown sick and act as he being possess by something that is wild and demonic. When he goes to hospital for checkup, no one able to cure sickness because no doctor could find the cause. He becomes crazy to the point that he murmured that he want to go back to the girl like a wild animals. He lost his mind. He only cure of his sickness after returning to the mountain villages to live with her ever since. The thing is this is my father, who is a former military officer in Vietnam army and has strong skepticism of existence of supernatural. However, he said that he witnessed this situation with his own eyes. It make this scenario really bizarre!

  • Thank You! it is true and it works…and if you offend your guru or and make amends…you are forgiven…but you have to apologise. The Dalai Lama was the one who explained why you, “take refuge in the 3 jewels. One reason you take refuge is because you are unskilled in such matters. You take refuge until you have developed your skills in such matters. You take refuge, everyday and of course every meditation with any buddha, includes taking refuge. Hence, you are doing it everyday, once. I however, myself am going to do, 100,000 recitations to further strengthen what I have accomplished so far. TD

  • Interesting point about things only attacking if our karma allows it. I had some issues with alcoholism when I was younger which was tied up with a lot of pain of loss, this ended one day when a thick dark shadow appeared. I ran from it, but blacked out for several hours only to wake up covered in cuts and bruises feeling like I’d been picked up and dropped repeatedly. I’ve heard of lots of similar stories from other people who have had issues with substance abuse. It’s like you have to lower yourself enough then these dark entities can attack. In many ways I’m very grateful to it, it frightened me so much that the addictive behaviour just ended there and life has of course only gotten better and better since then. Interesting lesson that even the darkest entities have the capacity to enlighten us and even they deserve our compassion.

  • Evil is defined as the absence of Good! Before its all Darkness and the first word God has uttered before all the subsequent creation is Let there be Light, then after He created the Heavens and Earth He created the plants and animals and lastly man in His own Image and likeness, an act of Love. So God is Light and God is Love these two are the very essence of why God is Good k!

  • i am a Buddhist but my family isn’t well know to the depth of it. And from last few months, i am getting more spiritual and knowing that Buddhism includes it. Also, idk i saw a reel predicting that, there might be a women probably, who did black magic on me, she is known to me, she is jealous of me, and she is ruining my life. If That is real, I am sure, i will get through this without using any other religion’s rituals besides mine. Trusting the process❤

  • In the Caribbean alot of women use black majic to keep men and jobs, it’s like almost compulsory now. Just saw a witch doctor advertising this exact thing on Facebook before coming across this article and there’s many women and unfortunately only women who liked and followed the post. In some Caribbean countries it’s even advertised on the TV so you can imagine how normal it is to them….such a shame

  • If you got nausea, you have to take a nausea pills, not taking flu shot. This is how Mantra and Darahni works for different types of negative Karma that must be those as karma, but the real name is to subjugate Demonic Force in this context). In terms of Karma World as Spiritual, If you harm someone through the negative Karma, It will pay you back with Three times because our world consist of three Realm( Formless(Arupya), Form(Rupa) and Desire(kama)).

  • The fact that you sent the harm back is a little damaging I have found out in my own experience. It caused chaos for me as I had no idea where the harm was coming from. So if everyone has a reflective reaction to harm, then the harm will bounce around chaotically hitting many people as opposed to if you had just nullified the harm, it would stop in its tracks, then and there, and harm no others. It’s an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind kind of lesson I learned. It is also very hard to stop the chain reaction of people getting hit by reflective protection. Also, I have found that if someone from the spirit realm may not reflect back to you in the timeline you think it’s going to happen. In my experience, the timeline was all over the place. Referring to my experience with the Xtian and Voodoo deity Bondye.

  • I also think that living people.(..not ghosts or spirits)..but living people…can curse us with black magic…if for instance you reject a woman who wanted you or your love? But didnt get it? With resentment they curse us….i can feel this …and the only thing i can think of is to try forgive… forgive the hatred and the curses of mass media aswell that wants us to hate and distrust. Which is a tough task because an awful lot of the people work to maintian the media! Everyday . …as if they want to continue to feed the social anxiety and depression in humanity….thru the repeated use of media.. The cults and covens behind mass media have barely been mentioned by anyone…ever!!…but it’s there .

  • I was targeted by some one used phone mirror also .my family perps have been years now my guides protect me telepathy I had rose quartz protect me unknown at time I was been set up Also shop theatre set up be called names in public .I don’t wish any harm to them I handed over to universe francansense essential oil for protection 💜

  • Thank you, Lama Tsem Rinpoche. May you be blessed with a swift return. Months back I had personally been involved in a magical group, and have history of black magic being used in my family. When my life was seemingly on the brink and unnatural situations kept arising, Sengdongma/Simhamuka and Tara manifested into my life. Thank you for the teachings, explanations, and guidance you provide all of us. 🥺 May all beings have happiness and love. 🙏☸️

  • You can only hurt yourself, trying to negatively affect someone else only comes back to you, not understanding this gives one undesirable Karma, and this is happening constantly all over the planet, and it is just simple ignorance, they are trying to do something they cannot do, know what you are capable of and what is a dead end road, but like children, we keep testing the water to see what we can get away with, but essentially this is a waste of time

  • @Tsem Rinpoche Thank you for this article and information, HOWEVER, please don’t call it “BLACK Magic”, associating the color black with evil is wrong. No color is inherently bad or evil. Connotations with black and bad things needs to stop. I call it “Mal Magic” aka malevolent magic, and I call good magic “Ben Magic” benevolent magic.

  • I need help i keep thinking about a person and lusting over him we hung out a couple times and her lives rent free in my head time to time. • Some of the so called “signs” are more likley to be that the person has an emotional or mental problem .. religion is the crutch of those trying to find a meaning for their lives or something to blame when thigs go wrong .. My opinion is no more valid or invalid than any other..I still respect an individual’s right to believe and practice as they wish. However I think some of what is said may cause confusion for some when interacting with others .. not have been influenced by magic, just suffering from a mental issue .

  • Maybe not necessarily to harm others and tools are not needed, but it is good to eventually develop some form of consistent power release over time with training, as this signals the body has transformed. The ancient yogic texts which qi gong and buddhism stem from also all mention the forms of powers the body can develop over time with internal training. Simply clinging to the current state of your body and this world is not enough to truly be complete. In fact refuting power and not letting the body produce more, can show you value this world/timespace more than other realms which can become a weakpoint.

  • A very inetersting article. As a laymen I see your methods in three broad terms: Faith Ritual Invocation. On a side note, I understand that if someone approaches a Catholic Priest regarding possession it is standard practise to have them seek psychological help first. Is there the same process in Buddhism?

  • Dorje Shugdän doesn’t even get a cursory mention? Have you abandoned him? 😔 There is no inherely existent black OR white magic, there is only imputation by conception. Mind creates reality. One person views black magic while another simply the ripening of previous negative karma, a cause of rejoicing if one understands the nature of karma and emptiness of inherent existence. Reliance upon one’s Guru is an internal path, nothing outside the mind exists the way it appears. Only emptiness manifesting is ultimate truth, the non dependent relationship of cause and effect. Nagajuna taught this intention, Great King Dorje Shugdän wears a round hat to teach us this. There is great deception in samsara. Developing the view of Je Tsongkhapa’s secret, hidden, or personal practice by knowing his mind is the only way to protect your mind. Relying on an external Guru is relying on a samsaric being.
