The concept of black magic in Islam is a well-established fact, mentioned in the Quran and Hadith. Ibn al-Nadim, a “bookish” pious Muslim, concedes the permissibility of white magic but condemns the practice of black magic. He traces licit magic back to the Prophet Muhammad and mentions signs of black magic or jinn possession.
Muslims believe in the existence of black magic due to references in the Holy Quran and Hadith. Some Quranic verses and duas mention that it is haram to do amaliyat (black magic) against someone, and yes, other people are affected by it. The Prophet Muhammad was affected by magic done by the daughters of Labid.
The presence of Jādū/Sihr (black magic) and Jinn is closely related to mental illness among contemporary British Muslims. A substantial number of Muslims continue to believe in the existence of witchcraft, while very few Muslims believe the use of sorcery is an acceptable practice under Islam. Both the Quran and hadith make reference to witchcraft and the evil eye, as well as supernatural beings known in Arabic as jinn.
Black magic is condemned in Islam, but Muslim thinkers are not clear on how to deal with this superstitious holdover from an earlier age. Belief and practice in magic in Islam is widespread and pervasive, both historically and currently. This belief is manifested in the belief in witchcraft, sorcery, magic, ghosts, and demons among global Muslim communities.
The modern study of magic in Islam is intimately connected to the history of Orientalism, which developed during the nineteenth century.

They ˹instead˺ followed the magic promoted by the devils during the reign of Solomon. Never did Solomon disbelieve, rather the devils disbelieved. They taught magic to the people, along with what had been revealed to the two angels, Hârût and Mârût, in Babylon.1 The two angels never taught anyone without saying, “We are only a test ˹for you˺, so do not abandon ˹your˺ faith.” Yet people learned ˹magic˺ that caused a rift ˹even˺ between husband and wife; although their magic could not harm anyone except by Allah’s Will. They learned what harmed them and did not benefit them—although they already knew that whoever buys into magic would have no share in the Hereafter. Miserable indeed was the price for which they sold their souls, if only they knew! Quran 2:102
What an amazing explanation mashallah. That’s always been my thoughts, Muslims are giving so much more power to these things than what they have, and I think it’s from their own traditions unrelated to Islam. If Allah is the Most Powerful how can he possibly allow these things to have effect on a Muslim who prays and spiritually protects himself/herself?? The only power it has is the power you give it. Allah has power over all things…
I have to say that in this matter you are wrong Dr. Shabir. science is a method, not all methods are science. and as you mentioned, in surat al-baqara 102, a relationship between shayatin (evil jinns) and sihr (magic) is clearly mentioned. not everything is science, because if we base everything scientifically, then we would have to scientifically prove the existence of jinns and that is not possible and that is not why we are going to say that jinns do not exist. it is even impossible to scientifically base morality. the scientific method is limited to the observable.
“Blowing on the knots”: It most probably referes to jinn “blowing” or “whispering” to the knots, i.e. the nerve knots in the brain, – that is the suggestions jinns (devils, evil jinns) can bring to the human. They themselves cannot physically force you to do anything, but they can “whisper” suggestions to you – i.e. “blow on knots”, interfere with brain nerves which then in turn manifest into “thoughts”. An example I always take about this is the following: Imagine you walk down the road, and you, being a good person, see an apple tree with apples hanging out of the garden of some person. Then, in one millisecond, a thought comes to your mind to pick one apple and eat it. You of course don’t do that, because it is haram, it would be stealing – but the real question is: where did that thought come from, seeing as you are a believer and a good person and not a thief?` My idea is that this is what is described above – as the devil (who is a jinn, an energy being) influences your mind by “blowing at the knots” in order to create to you this suggestion to steal the apple.
Black Magic is true, read surah baqarah, chapter 2, ayah: 102. only this one single ayah is enough to proof the reality of black magic & what can be done by Black Magic. There are so many hadith about black magic, which are sahih; so how many hadith you are going to reject? are you in the path of hadith rejectors?!
Magic: to trick the eye or the senses and make the person believe something that isn’t there. 1-If magic was a dark and mysterious force, God wouldn’t have said the magicians of Pharaoh tricked the eyes of the people and intimidated them: “He said, “You throw!” And when they threw, they beguiled the eyes of the people, and intimidated them, and produced a mighty magic”.7.116 So will you not reason? 2-If magic was a dark and mysterious force, and you can turn a rope into a snake by this force, then God wouldn’t have said Moses “Imagined” the ropes and the sticks to be moving, and instead simply said the ropes were made into snakes and were factually moving: “He said “Rather, you throw.” And suddenly their ropes and staffs imagined he from their magic to be moving”.20.66 Did God make a mistake? or God isn’t that precise with his wording? So will you not reason? 3-If magic was a dark and mysterious force, why would God call it the “Hidden Plan” of the magicians or “Kayd” in arabic?: “Now throw down what is in your right hand—it will swallow what they have crafted. What they have crafted is only a magician’s plan. But the magician will not succeed, no matter what he does”.20.69 Shouldn’t God call it the work or the dark creation of magicians? Or is God pointing to the fact that magic is nothing but a trickery, a hidden plan to fool the eyes and senses of people? Is God just bad with words? or you are the one bad with understanding? So will you not reason? 4-If magic was a dark and mysterious force, and you can turn a stick into a snake by this force, God from the start wouldn’t have sent to Pharaoh a miracle in the form of a stick turning into a snake!
So black magic does not exists? I find this scholar’s interpretation at odds with the Quran and Hadith. Black magic does exists as does the evil – even today there are still cultures who dabble in these practices. To be fair it doesnt mean that as muslims we go around blaming black magic for everything wrong – this is not how the prophet behaved.
Dear Teacher, I think you didn’t give fair importance about about harut and Marut and the knowledge separating between the man and his spouse ? And also about the numerous experiences of the ra9is and the personal experiences of people, be it Muslims or non Muslims . Also, believing in dark magic doesn’t mean we are not believing in science. It is in fact a form of evil science, very complicated science or علم as Allah refers to it . Please reconsider your stance or at least cover the subject with all the available informations from the Quran . You could also cover the subject of evil eye . Thank you
Very WEAK grip on this topic by dr shb. QURAN clearly talks about Magic in Hazrat Suleman(AS) era when people blamed him of practicing magic however QURAN states in SURAH BAQARAH AYAT 102 ‘ It was not Suleman who disbelieved but the devils disbelieved who taught mankind magic ‘ so clearly devils were teaching people magic….Dr shb kindly have grip on a certain topic and then talk about it
I agree on many of your points, but it becomes very “western” in the sense that seeing is believing. Black Magic is a practice, and even Mufti’s that have higher knowledge acknowledge the practice exists and that muslims should in general protect themselves. This does not mean that Allah is not in Power, if Allah swt allows it, then Allah swt also send us the cure for it (via ruqya). But to say that Muslims shouldn’t believe in the practice of black magic sihr, and its existence, and its effects, is a bit controversial in my humble oppinion. Why did we receive the guidance of Ruqya then?
Your assertion on this subject is simply wrong. Are you aware of the following verse? Instead of God, they only invoke female gods and they ˹actually˺ invoke none but a rebellious Satan— cursed by God—who said, “I will surely take hold of a certain number of Your servants. I will certainly mislead them and delude them with empty hopes. Also, I will order them and they will slit the ears of cattle and alter God’s creation.” And whoever takes Satan as a guardian instead of God has certainly suffered a tremendous loss. Satan only makes them ˹false˺ promises and deludes them with ˹empty˺ hopes. Truly Satan promises them nothing but delusion. It is they who will have Hell as their home, and they will find no escape from it! (Quran 4.117-121)
Now I actually have a question here. What’s Dr. Ali’s view on the supernatural entities like The Jinns and of their abilities? If they exist, say on a different dimension from where they can see us but we can’t, can there be any actions of them in particular which can effect a person? I look forward to and will be pleased to have answer on this topic please. Stay blessed.
if people wana know more about this topic such Black magic, jin posses, i recommended to look to south Est country … like Malaysia or Indonesia… our ancestor are closed to the race of the jin in the past…. its look like the knowledge about this aspect are lost among the Est side of the world…. Allah know better
Sister humble request, please say “peace be upon him” while taking the name of RASOOLALLAH(ṣallā llāhu ʿalayhī wa-ʾālihī wa-sallama). I have been perusal your website for so long and I have observed that you never say peace be upon him like Dr Shabbir does. I hope you understand my request .Ramadan kareem, Asalaam walekum!,
It’s so sad listening to the fanatic materialistic approche of Dr Shabir on the question! His conception of “reality” and his epistemology ! A man of such merit It’s so sad and terribly unfortunate! Dr Shabir, with this extreme materialistic approche, we’ll end up negating Allah, Angels, shayateen, hell and jannah ! For the “isra wal miraaj”, I assume your position is at the opposite side of Abubakr when he heard it for the first time from the kufar!
I became a good magician I was told by cop magician when I was only 13 years old I was so good at it sometimes I have to tell my mother the tricks because she thought I was doing something evil. And one of my mother so how I did the trick she used to tell me all that’s all you did and I used to laugh. What I never did black magic or those crazy stuff Voodoo thank God I never got involved with nothing like that
You just admitted that illusion of the eyes is found in the Quran and you agree with that and the problem with this is the prophet Muhammad s.a.w had the same magic done to him. The magic was he had the ILLUSION that he(s.a.w) had relations with his wives and he wasn’t aware until 1 of his wives said something. This was not explained in an honest matter.
The same thing that happened to Moses (PBUH) also happened to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) The Qur’an and the hadith used the same exact word, so why would you doubt only the hadith if you were honest with yourself also questioned the Qur’an? Every time the hadith of the Prophet (PBUH) contradicts their belief, they resort to the easiest solution, which is to question the hadith, not in a scientific and systematic way, but only because it does not correspond to what they want to hear and the society in which they live!
His bewitch is that he just forgot if he have intercourse with his wife or not thats all. Like he ate poisonous meat by a jewish women… nothing got to do with what Allah tell him to convey… just to show he is human and his life an example of how to deal with all this. Just that even if this magic exist it is not like the movie exaggerated that ppl should be fearful of.
Moses and Pharaoh’s Wizards was matching wits . it wasn’t magic . Staff represents Authority, the Wizards wisdom represents the Serpent,( humble as a Dove, and wise as a Serpent ) They were matching wisdom, knowledge. and understanding . It was the battle of wits . No stick no snakes ! Its all symbolic .
I’m astonished when he said to have scientific mind to explore these hadiths; Science would change itself, if another finding is discovered or portrayed. If we put physical reality (Science) in front of believing concepts of Islam, then everything will be questioned (believing in Sihr, Jinn, Angels, Tajjaal, Ya’juj Ma’juj, etc.) And He forgot to mention about “Evil Eye” Ahadiths. We should believe in Aqeedah how companions of the prophets believed in Islam. When you want to learn about Aqeedah in Islam it’s better to stick around the views of companions of the prophet and Rightful scholars rather than these kind of new Ideas.
Note: And there are many things science has not discovered & is yet to be discovered- but in due time InShaAllah it will be. but to assume something is “black magic” is extraordinary. extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence to substantiate it’s validity. As always love your articles Dr SA & Dr SA jnr 😍MAShaAllah
That man is amaaaazing! Always has a bent answer, quoting The Bible, Science, Hadith, Quran and other commentators at will. He is the real magician. We are a few who still hope for a clear and direct answer to one of the questions. We hope one day he will let the Quran speak without his own mad interpretation…
When i was in early age, i thought Allah taala will give wealth and easy luxury life to Prophet. But when i listened to Sirah of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) i cried..because there was lot of test was given to our beloved Prophet since he was in his mother womb. His father passed away when he was in his mother’s womb. His mother passed away when he was 7, then his grandfather, he was isolated and his people ate grass to stay alive, they make blackmgic and wanted to kill him, they throwing stone until he was bleeding, he lost 6 of his child..subhanallah if u find the right preacher who telling u about the life of our prophet u will cry. So much test 2xmore than Allah azza wa jalla test us. U will realized why Allah taala love our prophet and muslim make shalawat to him. The best creation ever created. The more test the more our prophet submit to his creator, the more u curse the more love prophet give.
In the Quran, Allah promises that “Surely, as regards My servants, you (Satan) have NO authority over them except those who follow you of the deviators.” (S. 15:42 Shakir) This means Muhammad was following Satan. “O you who believe! take care of your souls; he who errs cannot hurt you when you are on the right way; to Allah is your return, of all (of you), so He will inform you of what you did.” (S. 5:105 Shakir) Muhammad was not on the right way. “When thou recitest the Koran, seek refuge in God from the accursed Satan; he has NO authority over those who believe and trust in their Lord; his authority is over those who take him for their friend and ascribe associates to God.” (S. 16:98-100) Muhammad took Satan for his friend and committed shirk. “Save unto EVERY messenger whom He hath chosen, and then He maketh a guard to go before him and a guard behind him That He may know that they have indeed conveyed the messages of their Lord. He surroundeth all their doings, and He keepeth count of all things.” (S. 72:27-28 Pickthall) Allah did not guard Muhammad. This shows that Muhammad was not a true prophet.

{ نَّحۡنُ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَا يَسۡتَمِعُونَ بِهِۦٓ إِذۡ يَسۡتَمِعُونَ إِلَيۡكَ وَإِذۡ هُمۡ نَجۡوَىٰٓ إِذۡ يَقُولُ ٱلظَّٰلِمُونَ إِن تَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا رَجُلٗا مَّسۡحُورًا } (Surah Al-Isrâ’: 47) We are most knowing of how they listen to it when they listen to you and (of) when they are in private conversation, when the wrongdoers say, “You follow not but a man affected by magic.”
Quran 17:47 We are Best Aware of what they wish to hear when they give ear to thee and when they take secret counsel, when the evil-doers say: “Ye follow but a man bewitched.” Narrated `Aisha: that Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) was affected by magic, so much that he used to think that he had done something which in fact, he did not do, and he invoked his Lord (for a remedy). Then (one day) he said, “O `Aisha!) Do you know that Allah has advised me as to the problem I consulted Him about?” `Aisha said, “O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)! What’s that?” He said, “Two men came to me and one of them sat at my head and the other at my feet, and one of them asked his companion, ‘What is wrong with this man?’ The latter replied, ‘He is under the effect of magic.’ People in the early age of Islam did not believe in blasphemous hadith that contradict the Quran. Abu Bakr al-Jassas al-Razi al-Hanafi was a prominent Hanafi jurist from the fourth century, one of the most respected scholars in the field of Uŝūl (epistemic principles), and the grand-teacher of Abul Hasan al Quduri, who wrote the most famous and most commonly used primer in Hanafi jurisprudence, ‘Mukhtasar al-Quduri’. He not only rejected this hadith but stated “the ignorant of the Hashawis (anthropomorphists, those who believe that God is a form or body bound by space) narrated this hadith without knowing it was fabricated.”
My prophet Muhammad (s) is not effected by sihr, I dont know what u people believes First thing is “our prophet is prophet of Allah swt”, you know what I mean, right😊 Secondly, our prophet is one who is effected by sihr, this is the claim of makkah mushriks, Allah refutes this in quran, and claim of prophet effects sihr will go against quran, إِذْ يَقُولُ ٱلظَّٰلِمُونَ إِن تَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا رَجُلًا مَّسْحُورًا (Quran 17:47) May Allah protects us from this, now some will say: so what about the hadeeth, it is saheeh right, check next point about the hadeeth Thirdly, the hadees reported that prophet is effected by sihr is reported by hisham bin urwa from his father urwa, hisham from his father he used to say which is not heared, (search if you have maktab shamila), and lot of contradictions, big to say the people who claim prophet is effected by sihr and makkah mushriks have no difference, Learn, dont judge too quickly, dont label, dont be biased, May Allah swt guide us to the correct path Ameen
I’m confused, we learn all the good and bad we recieve are from Allah and Allah alone. It’s is the basic pillar of belief we follow. And then there is this evil eye and black magic talks, an incident about the prophet (pbuh) hair knots. If someone can do black magic and affect my life and bring bad into it, how can I believe in the basic pillar. It wouldn’t be from Allah. Please help me clear this contradiction I have been facing.
And they followed what recite(d) the devils over (the) kingdom (of) Sulaiman. And not disbelieved Sulaiman (and) but the devils disbelieved, they teach the people (the) magic and what was sent down to the two angels in Babylon, Harut and Marut. And not they both teach any one unless they (both) say, “Only we (are) a trial, so (do) not disbelieve.” But they learn from those what (they) causes separation with it between the man and his spouse. And not they (could) at all (be those who) harm with it any one except by permission (of) Allah. And they learn what harms them and not profits them. And indeed they knew that whoever buys it, not for him in the Hereafter any share. And surely evil (is) what they sold with it themselves, if they were (to) know. Surah Al Baqarah

Astagfirullah, how can you believe the holy prophet(saw),was affected by black magic or evil, when Allah(swt) in surah al-imran verse 82-85 and are you going to follow a man as if he’s possessed or mad? If anyone believes this, they are believers of something that contradicts the holy Quran and is unacceptable to believe anything that goes against anything in the holy Quran, and what would be the state of the ummah if the prophets(pbu),specifically the holy prophet(saw),the greatest of all the prophets(pbu)
While Jesus was healing the sick, forgiving sin, and making the blind see Muhammad was worried about a child in his bed and was even bewitched by black magic, kissing black stones and doing pagan rituals that is still going on in Mecca today, he was clearly a false prophet. (Narrated by al-Bukhaari 4987). Touching the Stone is one of the things by means of which Allah expiates for sins. It was narrated that Ibn ‘Umar said: I heard the Messenger of Allah say: “Touching them both (the Black Stone and al-Rukn al-Yamani) is an expiation for sins.” (Sunan an-Nasa’i 3255) “It was narrated from Aisha that the Messenger of Allah married her when she was six years old, and consummated the marriage with her when she was nine.” Sahih al-Bukhari 5080 (Book 67 Hadith 18) “When I got married, Allah’s Messenger said to me, “What type of lady have you married?” I replied, “I have married a matron He said, “Why, don’t you have a liking for the virgins and for fondling them?” Jabir also said: Allah’s Messenger said, “Why didn’t you marry a young girl so that you might play with her and she with you?” Sahih al-Bukhari 5765 (Book 76, Hadith 79) Narrated Aisha: Magic was worked on Allah’s Messenger so that he used to think that he had sexual relations with his wives while he actually had not. Sahih al-Bukhari 3175 Narrated Aisha: Once the Prophet was bewitched so that he began to imagine that he had done a thing which in fact he had not done.
