Trait schizotypy, characterized by perceptual, cognitive, and affective abnormalities, has been found to be a strong, positive predictor of beliefs in conspiracy theories. Conspiracy theorists believe plots are behind many situations, such as the Apollo moon landing being faked or the White House forcing Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy to resign. While perception of conspiracy is a common feature of paranoia, belief in conspiracy theories cannot be classified as paranoia in a general sense. There is little to no evidence that conspiracy theory beliefs are associated with mental illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depression.
The aim of this study was to explore the utility of the odd beliefs/magical thinking subtype of schizotypy, Machiavellianism, grandiose narcissism, and other conspiracy theories. Humans seem drawn to dark conspiracy theories, often in favor of the simple truth. Conspiracy theories are commonly defined as explanatory beliefs about a group of actors colluded in secret to reach malevolent goals. Interpersonal mistrust and trust in social sources of information were associated significantly with conspiracy, but their association with paranoid beliefs was stronger.
Schizotypy is a personality organization that can be seen as a risk factor for schizophrenia-spectrum disorders. Hallucinations are common symptoms in schizophrenia, dementia, amnesia, and delusional disorders, and can also be experienced as part of depression. A “conspiracy theorist” is merely a person who believes in something that does not exist.

📹 How psychosis bends your reality – BBC
At 23 years old, David Harewood had a psychotic breakdown and was sectioned. As he puts it, he ‘lost his mind’. On World Mental …
Since 2020 lockdowns I had some psychotic attacks, it is either manifestation of toxic guilt or depression. I don’t know how to live with myself. I didn’t have almost any mental illnesses, maybe except mild depression due not seeing my favorite band Rush in Poland, but since lockdowns everything in my life got worse. On top of that I don’t accept being from Poland, because I became a feminist since JK Rowling’s cancellation and other reasons for a while I won’t say. Maybe tough history Poland faced makes me even more refusing to accept this fact, eh? I might be autistic, even though undiagnosed, so that is why I get sensory overload.
I’ce only really had one brief encounter with psychosis around two years ago, at least I think it was psychosis. It lasted maybe about two weeks. The TV and the radio seemed like it was talking to me and telling me things like if I left my house I would die in some horrific manner, and that I was worthless and stupid. I’d hear people on TV talking about each other but be convinced they were talking about me? I don’t know. It was very scary, I didn’t leave my house the entire time. My mum physically had to drag me to school and I hid in the toilet until about 3 hours after school ended before running home terrified because I thought I’d get killed. I’ve never really told anybody about it, I guess I’m sort of ashamed. I also remember seeing things when I was very young, maybe 5 or 6. I saw massive turtles, and the world seemed rather distorted for short periods of time. And I remember this one sensation which I could only liken to a massive marshmallow expanding in my bedroom and somewhat suffocating me. I remember it vividly and I found it really terrifying, like I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t stop crying. Now I think about it, it reminds me of when I’ve been very high on weed to the point I’ve had slight hallucinations. And before you mention it, my psychotic breakdown was before I’d ever started smoking weed, and I haven’t smoked it a good while now.
I had an experience of psychosis last year, when my delusions convinced me that my hasband was satan and he wanted to kill me, me the soul. that I was an angel who came down to earth in order to save him and change his mind. But it was ipossible to save him. So I had no choice but to flee, so I left him. I had called my parents and told them all about it, and they knew I lost my mind. they told my huband but he didn’t accept it at first. Then when I left him, I ran into some guy and my delusions told me that he was god’s chosen one for me. And so I went on to have a relationship with this guy. This guy realized that I wasn’t in my right mind and took me to the hospital and I started taking antipsychotics. the delusions stopped. My extended family broke contact with me. And when now it’s been a year and I really struggle a lot with accepted what I’ve done during psychosis. I have no self respect and I struggle to fogive myself and to let it go. I live in remorse and shame. a lot of shame.
I had a psychotic episode 14 months ago and lost 15 days of my life I can’t remember. However I woke up being discharged from porter health in Denver. My father called and told me he had visited me. I couldn’t remember the visit. However when he came to pick me up form the hospital he brought with him a Bible and several notebooks. He asked me if I remembered telling him to buy it for me. Of course I didn’t. He then opened the Bible’s case and showed me several pages of papers banded together with rubber bands. The title of the paper was acts from the book in the Bible. I had written over 15 pages front to back describing in such detail that book. However I can’t recite a single verse today. He then pulled out some drawings. He once again asked me if I remembered them. I told him no And he began trying to explain what they meant. I had described a depiction of a fourth dimension. On the paper was intricate art. Several physics equations and drawings of a worm hole and a dark hole. It was extremely pretty to look at. In the very center of the paper it was drawn over so much it had a hole in it. Apparently that was from me folding the paper in half and poking it. Unfortunately it still took about a month or so to really come out of the psychosis. What I experienced and saw, felt was unimaginable. From indescribable Beaty to this isolating cold numb feeling of darkness. This constant battle of good and evil.
Before psychosis make you crazy you should know it’s a gift, in my country people like me and you with psychosis are sufis mystics and great people only if you go all the way towards your own self actualizing the self and be selfless afterwards then you can experience the divine, or take magic mshrooms and hallucinate and see god 😅
Had very severe psychosis in 2017 until 2022. Still not totally normal and don’t think I’ll ever be. But through self awareness and meditation Ive always been able to tow the line and come back. Luckily never did anything too crazy while psychotic but did wholeheartedly believe aliens created humanity. Still do, because it’s obvious lol but who cares. Gotta live our lives.
This is exactly how I felt. March 15 2022❤ I was god, I woke up. I tried to wake everyone else up, but they were caught in the dream. That’s okay. At least I have a knowing now, instead of a belief/faith. Much love for sharing your experience. I feel less alone. Waking up is lonely. If you resonate with this, you are not alone. Very likely that many people you have ran into in daily life had the same experience, but no one talks about it. But I sure will. It’s all I comment about, and it’s been over a year since it happened.
Had an episodes… literally physical dejavu. Not the “I be here before” but “that literal that literally just happen before my face twice!” Type of dejavu. I had sleep paralysis. I heard voices on two occasions… one told me “life is frivolous ” the other one was two voices at the same time(my dad) and (my sister) I “woke up” feeling possessed turned on tv and it was like a paranormal experience, like symbols on the tv, dvd players still playing with nothing inside. Having these profound feelings like I was given knowledge or chosen for some purpose. And I haven’t done shit in my life but fail downwards ever since
Sorry about your traumatic experience, David. I hope time has healed you. Smoke weed if you want don’t be on the BBC naysaying it my man. I can understand your position but psychosis is a useful stick to bash people with, especially those with mixed heritage or atypical physiology. Doctos treat people as if they should all aspire to the same level of perfection. Most dont know how to get down & loosen up, they’re on a death drive of their own yet think they’re superheroes. From exoerience working with some awful people, don’t I repeat DON’T believe the hype.. How many doctors are desperately lonely and shut up people with support systems in horrible environments. Dr K what a tosser
Every religious and mystical beliving person fits this diagnosis the psychologists just don’t want to say it… But I do… Because it’s true. And ironically when you free yourself from this you still get driven mad by the fact your surrounded by people worldwide who are delusional but it’s just brushed aside and tiptoed around. Worlds mostly living in a fantasy land.
had psychosis when i quit adderal.. problem is the things i saw that would happen in the future.. did happen… im still trying to learn about time perception and psychosis/consciousness. i also now learn quantum physics and draw/dream again and have more a creative spark. been clean now for years. almost like the psychotic break made me better/smarter?
Its glitches in the matrix. If the matrix was a 4 dimensional puzzle board, a person in the matrix would be like a malfunctioning puzzle piece. Now the matrix itself becomes less functional. Synchronicity of the universe becomes upset. Unordinary things can happen. You could be lost in an episode and the upset of synchronicity will move energy in unseen and unexpected ways. A form of magic. Its energy. Moving.
Such a good article to scare old british people when they see their new immigrant neighbour and says “hello, good day” to them and people especially teenagers who have maybe questions or problems about their mental health and go on youtube to find something like this. Good job to my man over here but terrible article bbc sucks
Psychotic episodes are noooooo joke man…. I was living In a motel. I paid my rent one day…. And ran off. I could tell the front desk lady was setting me up… the parking lot was filled with actors (I thought) I walked for prolly 5 miles until I waved down a cop…. I told him I was scared for my life, I think people are trying to kill me, or take me to Mexico…. He put me in handcuffs, I told him I had weed on me, and he took me to jail…. In jail they tazed me, and fucked with me non stop, didn’t let me sleep, they’d come take my bed…. They thought I was a meth head. And they had a blast with me…
I had drug-induced psychosis last time I smoked weed. I had panic attacks, yelled at my friends who I thought were agents spying on me, then just lay there in bed listening to the voices in my head for the rest of the night. I was lucky that this only lasted the one night. Felt a little dazey for the next few days but beyond that I’ve been okay, and just learned that me and weed don’t mix well.
I have pretty bad PTSD and depression, on top of immense guilt, over a car crash that happened when I was 18 where one of my best friends was killed. Five years later, it was close to the time of year when the crash happened, I was out of a job, extremely lonely, depressed, stressed out, and anxious. I was a little tipsy at one of my only friend’s house and decided to try weed to calm me down. I took one hit from my friend’s bong. Just a small one. Just a little bit of weed. And it triggered my PTSD and I started panicking, which then led to a psychotic break. I remember bits and pieces of the real world during that time, but I remember almost all of the hallucinations and emotions. It was utterly horrifying. I thought it was all happening again. The terrible hallucinations and blackouts stopped after a few hours as the weed wore off, but the fear and distrust in reality lingered for about a week. I begged to be taken to the hospital because I was convinced the weed had been laced with something. I don’t think that was a delusion, I was just hoping it had been laced so that I could explain to myself what had happened. I was very worried that I was developing early symptoms of some severe mental health disorder like schizophrenia. I know that weed can trigger these symptoms early in people predisposed to conditions like schizophrenia. But now a year and lots of therapy later, I believe it was a one off incident caused by drug use compounded with PTSD.
Ma SHA Allah much love and respect so so interesting ❤ I noticed a few similarities with rain Man, I always thought he was Autistic however after googling it he had savant syndrome., When you check the brain scans it’s deeply incredible and interesting. We know humans can Unlock all areas of their brain such as the Shaolin and other tribes across the globe. Even in the Eygption days we used more of our brains even telapthicaly debating and conversing. Even today in China villages the women ‘know’ when the men folk for example fishing, the women know when they will be home and have the food freshly waiting. Subhan’Allah really great interviews and documentary thank you ❤❤❤❤
I recently got diagnosed with psychosis. It’s almost impossible to describe. It’s like being in two dimensions of reality. I know personalties that I can’t say for sure exist. I know, in some form they exist. It’s like falling in with the wrong group and having to deal with them. I often ask if they could just be nice once in a while, as i don’t want enemies. All i want is peace.
I think the worst part about my Psycosis in 2020 apart from how much it affected my family is the fact that I remember nearly everything I did or said…. i have been told many times its quite unusual to not black out. The memories of what I did stay with me but I don’t hold it against myself… in fact I just laugh because a lot of it was quite funny!
Weed did it for me too. This high potency THC they legalized here in California and so many other states is going to result in new psychotic episodes for tens of thousands of people. It’s especially scary for people with undiagnosed pre-existing disorders like BiPolar Disorder as was the case for me. Thankfully simply stopping the weed use resolved the issue, but I have never felt the same since.
I had bad health anxiety, i would scan my body religiously. I developed a horrible OCD out of nowhere, i would scan the floor for dirty needles constantly if i stud on something i would take my shoe off in public sock to and scan my feet for signs of puncher. Eventually i would only go out at night, socialising was a whole other issue id talk rapidly and be just all over the place. It left like it came. I dont understand why.
