Do Whales Inhabit Mystic Seaport?

Mystic Seaport in Connecticut has partnered with NOAA’s Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary to bring the Charles W. Morgan to sail among whales once again, raising awareness of the fragile state of our oceans and their importance in our ecosystem. The interactive exhibit, “Voyaging in the Wake of the Whalers”, tells the rich story of a culture shaped by these unique creatures, from whale hunting to whale watching. The exhibit pushes past the common perception and mechanics of whaling to show the richer and deeper stories of the peoples, places, ships, and whales that impacted and impacted the industry.

The aquarium at Mystic Seaport features over 300 species, including some that can be petted. The museum is open year-round and offers connections to the extraordinary maritime history of New England. The exhibit also features the only beluga whale exhibit in the Northeast, with over 300 species to explore.

On a day sail out of Provincetown, Mass., the ship encountered humpback whales on the sanctuary, including a 49-foot deceased female humpback whale on Block Island. The Center for Coastal Studies identified her as Binary, a 37-year-old whale.

In 2014, Mystic Seaport Museum took the last remaining wooden whaleship in the world back to sea, marking history. A beluga whale that came to Mystic Aquarium from Canada two years ago is now in critical condition, and two of five beluga whales transported to Mystic are in critical condition. No whale watching trips leave from the Mystic area, but seal watching trips are available in the winter.

What is Mystic Seaport famous for?

Mystic Seaport Museum, located on the banks of the Mystic River, has been a center of shipbuilding since the 1600s. Between 1784 and 1919, over 600 vessels were constructed along the river. However, with the advent of steam power and the decline of wooden shipbuilding after the Civil War, textile manufacturing became Mystic’s dominant industry. In 1929, three Mystic residents, Edward E. Bradley, Carl C. Cutler, and Dr. Charles K. Stillman, formed the Marine Historical Association to preserve America’s maritime culture and turn its achievements into an inspirational force for the future.

Despite the Great Depression, the museum grew rapidly, acquiring the Charles W. Morgan, the country’s last wooden whaleship, and transforming it into an authentic coastal village area. Over the next 50 years, the museum amassed the world’s largest collections of maritime photography, boats, and two million other maritime artifacts. In the 1970s, the museum expanded with the Henry B. duPont Preservation Shipyard, additional exhibition buildings, and several new accredited educational programs.
