Tempestuous Magic is a bonus action that allows Storm Sorcerers to cause whirling gusts of elemental air to briefly surround them, immediately before or after casting a spell of 1st level or higher. This feature encourages a hit-and-run playstyle, allowing the sorcerer to fly up to 10 feet in the air.
Level 1 Storm Sorcerers start off with the Tempestuous Magic passive, which allows them to gain Fly as a bonus action after casting a Level 1 spell. Tempestuous Magic: Flight allows a Storm Sorcery Sorcerer to disengage and fly away after casting a Level 1 spell or higher, without risk of being attacked by enemies.
When surrounded, the sorcerer can cast a spell, fly away, and use their movement to get some distance between themselves and the monster that was in their way. The trait has nearly identical wording to Tempestuous Magic, allowing the sorcerer to fly up to 10 feet.
In PnP, Tempestuous Magic is largely used to disengage from melee without getting an attack of opportunity. However, it can also be used to move 5 feet in one direction, then turn and fly 5 feet in another, or choose to move 5 feet in one direction.
In summary, Tempestuous Magic is a bonus action that allows Storm Sorcerers to fly up to 10 feet in the air, allowing them to disengage from melee without receiving an attack of opportunity. However, it is important to note that this feature may not always be effective in all situations and should be used with caution.

Welcome to article 1 of 52 for 2024! My target is one about every week for this entire year, so thank you for joining me for this first one. Fresh off of a brief week-long break at the beginning of this year, I’m geared up for a handful of articles about Baldur’s Gate 3. Would you prefer to see those mostly one after another, or with other topics in between? They’ll all have different focuses, of course, it’s not going to be three Gameplay Gems. Well actually if you would want three BG3 Gameplay Gems I probably could do that, I wouldn’t lack topics.. Let me know! Enjoy the article!
One thing I really like about features like these is that they give you a little bit more to do on your turn! Even if you can’t do it all the time, and the benefit is relatively minor (In the Tabletop I think it’s only 10 feet of flight or so?), you still get to do 2 things instead of one on your turn. That way you still get to do something, even if your spell fails to do anything useful. Most classes only do one thing on their turn at lower levels, so failing to do that one thing is really The freedom of movement you get by engaging or disengaging without opportunity attacks is also pretty nice too!
