Freddie told the band he had AIDS in 1987 not during Live Aid in 1985. He continued to make albums until he could not do it anymore. Freddie made sure he had legacy in music not for having a deadly disease. After his death, Brian, John and Roger made sure to keep that legacy going along with Mary and his family.
I’ll be honest: I really like the way that Rami played this scene. On the one hand you can tell that Freddie, on some level, is scared about how much longer he has to live but on the other he’s all “I don’t care who hears me say that I’m scared, I’ve said it and from here on out the only thing I want to focus on is making music, not on how sick I am.”
I think at this moment the band had fully forgiven Freddie for his misdeeds, and that they realised that it wasn’t just about him performing alongside them but that he wanted to make amends before he passes away. I particularly liked Roger’s reaction at hearing the news and then compliments Freddie to a point that he has forgotten the past arguments between them: “You’re a Legend Fred” (love that line).
Freddie lived as he did, playing to the beat of his own drum. Yet while it is sad that when individuals with great talent are brought into this world, we have to appreciate the time, no matter how long or how short we have to spend with them, because no matter what way you want to look at it; mortality is the universal constant is what we all have in common; because it’s what we do with our short time in this world, the many individuals we encounter, or don’t encounter, the life or lives we help for better or worse is really what matters most; and people like Freddie made such an impact on the lives he knew personally, and the lives he inspired by the music he and his band mates made on millions around the world through the decades is a gift he left for us to cherish for years to come. God speed Freddie, and may you rock the Heavens from here to eternity.
The main issue I always had with this movie is the liberties they took to give a dramatic story. Freddie didn’t tell anybody about his having AIDS because he didn’t have it at this period. He contracted HIV in the mid 80’s and kept it a secret from everyone including his bandmates until his illness became too apparent to hide. While this telling of the story is amazing in it’s own right and gives the most satisfying ending, I really wish they hadn’t left out or altered their story for the sake of the movie.
They had a nurse address our high school about AIDS in the gym just before a pep rally for the Friday night game. Over a thousand kids sitting there and she says “…and finally, NO, you cannot get AIDS from a toilet seat…” the whole place was silent, then I blurted out “you can if the guy is still sitting there!” and the entire place lost it. I was voted the “class clown” for a reason.
Great scene. Instead of focusing on his plight and wallowing in self pity, which would certainly be understandable, he decided to focus on how he could best use the time he had left. Something that always impressed me about the real Freddie is, by all accounts, from what I’ve heard, he was gracious right to the end.
This is something that tends to separate people. How one sees their death. Some just lament the time they have left, others do things that they never done before. Then there are people like Freddie who say ‘fuck it’ and just continue on without a care in the world. He wanted to sing, he did not want sympathy, condolences or being a poster boy for anything. All he wanted to do was stand up on that stage, say fuck it to aids and sing because that’s how he wanted to go out. How he wanted to be remembered was on a bed dying, not spouting pleas for help. He wanted to be the one standing on the stage, singing for all. He is and always will be a legend.
A sequel would be sad as hell,but,there are some amazing stories about his tenacity and feverish work ethic. They could cover the Magic Tour,his work with Montserrat Caballe,The Great Pretender,The Miracle,recording Innuendo (at this point in the movie he would look really ill),and you could end the movie with the last thing he ever sang..Mother Love. When he said he couldn’t do any more work on it and would be back after a rest,and never came back. That’s why Brian sings the last verse of that song 🙁
Despite the film not (in my opinion) doing enough justice to Freddie Mercury’s and Queen’s stories, this scene was brilliantly done. Even though it’s historically inaccurate as Freddie first tested in late ‘85 and it came back negative, then tested positive in the Spring of ‘87, it’s still very realistic how Freddie could’ve caught HIV before Live Aid and revealed it to his bandmates. Had it actually happened like this, it’s true that they would’ve gone on to own Live Aid regardless.
Yes this was a good movie but this never happen Freddie didn’t find out he had Aids till 87 he didn’t tell the band till 89/90. The only thing that was wrong with Freddie during Live Aid was his voice was messed up and the doctors told him not to perform but he said fuck that. Queen would put out It’s a kinda Magic in 86 and go on the It’s a kinda Magic tour or Europe that same year.
Okay, I hate to be that guy but there are way too many misinformed people commenting on this article… You all know he wasn’t actually diagnosed with AIDS at this point in his life, right? He was perfectly healthy before, during and even for a brief period after the Live Aid concert lol, meaning there’s no way in hell this conversation took place in that particular context. Yes I’m sure it makes for good dramatic effect for the sake of a movie, but it seems like people are getting emotional over a very misleading scene 😂😂
Fact. This scene never happened. 1989 was when Freddie told his band mates. Also Freddie did not at any time split up the band or beg Bob Geldof to squeeze them into the Live Aid show. Queen had already been announced months earlier that they were on the bill. Jim Beach was furious as Geldof hadn’t yet asked the band which meant it was Geldof doing the begging. Not the other way around. Terrible movie with lies from the word go.
There is always something profoundly dishonest about biopics – directors/ writers choose to dramatize key points in the persons life for dramatic purposes which is invariably a dishonest practice. The general audience then go away with the notion that the story is inherently true when it isn’t. This scene is a case in point – Mercury didn’t tell the band until 1989 when having dinner in Montreux. There had been rumours before in the press and rather than confirm them, he chose to withdraw himself and shut out everyone but his closest confidants so it wasn’t a big heroic moment at all.
I don’t like Sasha Baron Cohens idea. The movie shouldn’t be about Freddie’s personal life such as his sexploits and sexcapades. They were a band, each contributed to their success and wrote popular songs. Freddie was a performer, not a poster boy for the lgbtq, but a legendary performer from a legendary band. If freddy’s solo career was as comparable to his time in queen, ok, make that movie. But he was a part of queen, so the movie should be about queen
I do love and hate this scene (hate because it just wrecks me emotionally) But I took professional singing lessons and they told me stress and stuff on your mind affects your performance, so when we sang for Funerals we had to be careful how much we cried……so when he says he sounds like shit, you can definitely tell how heavy this was for him. He’s sounding off his game because he was dreading having to tell them he was sick……I’m going to go cry in a bucket now.
