Edward Snowden, a former employee of the CIA and contractor for the National Security Agency, has left the US in late May after leaking classified NSA documents to the media. Snowden, an American citizen with a girlfriend and a house in Hawaii, has described himself as a trained spy specialising in electronic surveillance, dismissing claims he was a mere technical assistant. He used to work for the CIA as a technical assistant and later went to work for the private intelligence contractor Dell.
The documents Snowden stole have no connection to programs that could impact privacy or civil liberties but rather pertain to military, defense, and other sectors. Snowden is seeking a safe haven after leaving Hong Kong after being charged with Espionage Act violations by the U.S. government. He has also been a political dissident and has discussed democracy in an interview by Col. Lawrence Wilkerson of William and Mary.
In his memoir, Snowden chronicles his life game by game, from Nintendo to the U.S.A., Jill Lepore writes. The leaks by Snowden have led to the revelation of America’s extensive surveillance program, which has been a subject of interest for conspiracy theorists. Snowden’s actions have led to the release of unreleased documents and the NSA as “Big Brother”.
