Don’T Know The Mascot Of My Own School?

This article provides a comprehensive guide on the importance of a school mascot, the process of selecting one that aligns with your school’s values, and the necessity of maintaining and evolving your mascot over time. It explores the layers of history, artistry, and emotion woven into the fabric of school mascots, revealing how they have become integral to a school’s story and its community.

Choosing a school mascot can be daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. A series of questions based on five different categories can help you choose a mascot. To make the best choice, look to those around you for mascot handler candidates, and if your mascot is part of a school, get to know the members of your school’s dance and cheer teams.

To decide on a mascot for your elementary school, follow these nine steps:

  1. WANT to be the mascot: Being the school mascot isn’t just about wearing a costume; it’s known in high school. The mascot’s identity is usually kept a secret.

  2. Choose the best school mascot names: High school was an Eagle, college was a Dragon, and wheat mascot from Kansas.

  3. Switch between the school’s mascot and name: It usually does not take a lot of effort to find any high school’s mascot.

  4. Consider the school’s name: While generic mascots are acceptable, the name is theirs and requires permission to use.

  5. Consider team sports icons: Public school names should always be in the public domain, and their logo/mascot may be copyrighted.

Female mascots serve as a powerful representation of female leaders, encouraging students to embrace and see their power. This can lead to increased confidence in leadership roles, as seen in group projects, class discussions, and student government. Male mascots without female counterparts can make males seem more dominant in society, as females are underrepresented in popular culture and movies. By incorporating both male and female strong figures, future generations may grow up with a more dominant female presence, reducing gender gaps.

  • What do you know about rolling in the deep when your mind spins like it’s in ice when everyone is talking Put shit slow yeah I feel like an astronaut in the sea What do you know about rolling in the deep when your mind spins like it’s in ice when everyone is talking Put shit slow yeah I feel like an astronaut in the sea

  • I’m a mix between the ‘hero’ and the ‘lost child’ in a weird way. I’m an only child but I’m very self-sufficient and tend to fly under the radar of my parents with what I do other than grades. I try my best to earn their approval but most times I’m shoved into the lost child role anyway. There’s no obvious/physical abuse in my households (my parents are divorced) but a lot goes on that nobody else in the family knows such as the emotional abuse, misogyny, and transphobic/homophobic tendencies and behaviors Edit: Not to be THAT person but WTFFFF 274 likes and a heart from the creator 😭 that’s the most I’ve ever gotten thank you so much ❤️

  • I wouldn’t say that my family is dysfunctional, but I did play the role of the lost child/scapegoat and a bit of the mascot. I was more outgoing and social in my younger years, but in recent years I’ve become more distant and isolated. I also have minor temper issues, although I only take out my frustrations by talking to my friends or building up my rage inside. I usually am the mascot in my friend group, being the more energetic and comedic one. I joke about a lot of things, but I often struggle to trust others completely, including myself sometimes.

  • i find myself being a a mix between the scapegoat and lost child, kind of the enabler. I used to be a follow rules and never get in trouble very much. as i grew up, my parents fought a lot and just made our home into a not comfortable living environment. it would feel like being at school was so much better than home because no matter what i did, i was never good enough. i would be blamed for the problems that werent my fault. they would tell me that they wished i would be more like my old self. i started being more quiet again and doing what was expected if me but it resulted in me being even more introverted and socially awkward and feeling very alone.

  • Sounds weird but Im a bit of a Hero and a lost child. Although I grew up in a mainly functional family with no substance abuse or physical abuse. The words hit harder. Being the oldest sibling I had a role to play as the cover up or the status holder of the family. Be it good grades or polite manners, because of this constant facade I kinda lost myself and my identity and mainly just adjusted myself to others needs. Making me an indecisive low self esteemed individual who had multiple complexes and internal battles. I understand I don’t have it that bad, but even I growing up in a somewhat ‘normal’ family was affected by the constant neglect, fights, pressure and blame that revolved within my life.

  • Never have I heard a better description of myself than when I heard the lost child. My family isn’t dysfunctional, but my brother has been a major bully since we were young. So, I grew up annoyed and constantly angry with him and before I started school that’s how I grew up. I love my parents but my dad’s always away and my mom has other things to do so I stay in my room. I became completely isolated in 4th grade to bullying and then made a few friends years later but 4th grade’s loneliness scarred me emotionally. My social anxiety had gotten worse after that. I make sure I follow the rules so that I don’t get in trouble but I feel so lonely doing it. I also make sure to be polite. I’ve learned to act respectful so that people love me and although I’m modest about it, I like compliments.

  • I’m a mix between ‘The Hero’ and ‘The Lost Child’. No physical abuse in my home and no addictions problems either, just lots of mental abuse. I tend to be the role model and put up the happy face. My parents tend to show me off as a prime example of how good their parenting was. But I also fly underneath their radar. If I’m not needed to boost their moral state, I’m ignored and uncared for.

  • My family isn’t what you would call dysfunctional, but I tend to be cast as either the scapegoat or the hero depending on the situation, particularly when my parents are arguing. That’s why I insisted on sharing a room with my siblings, as they see me more as a parental figure than an older sister. However, I’m forced to put on a happy face as I’m expected to be the family’s pride and joy, but also to ensure my siblings don’t worry about me.

  • I was (still am) more of a lost child. Growing up, I never asked for anything, was always just pushed to the side of everything and ignored most of the time. I was always hesitant asking about things I could or couldn’t do and had friends at school, but was also just on the side, while other people talked most of the time. I think the only reason they were my friends was because I subconsciously change my personality based on the people I’m with, in a way that would make them like me. By the time I was 10, I had a big identity crisis kinda thing with who I was inside.

  • I ended up as a mascot and a hero. I was helping my older, yes. Older siblings in anyway, but I was covering up my pain of my parents being separated. I was always sad, but I helped and tried too cheer everyone up. My mom wasn’t a alcoholic but she was going through boyfriends really fast.. I ended up comforting her and I got trauma from one of them, as this man was neglectful. He would only help and be nice when my mother asked, and he never showed love too her in-front of us. He was probably using her for money, as my mother told me things I, well kinda didn’t wanna hear. I ended up crying at recess around my “friends” but never wanted too talk about it so my “friends” ended up thinking I was lying. I never truly recovered from that trauma.

  • I’m probably a mix between the scapegoat, lost child and mascot. Due to anger and fighting in my family lots of the time I tend to act out even though I’m the one getting blamed for acting out and it’s said that “I’m just ungrateful” I also tend to follow most of the rules so that atleast a little bit of the fighting can hopefully be cleared, and then I tend to turn my problems into jokes as a coping technique.

  • im the youngest and when i asked my brother this question he said i was a mix of “the hero”, ” Lost Child ” and “Mascot” cause I’d always had to cook food for myself and sometimes also for my older brother cause he’d forget to eat lunch dinner and sometimes breakfast. He said id always try to get everyone’s attentions during an argument so they’d forget about it and that i follow the rules and never disturb any one even tho “i have no friends” ( that was a joke he said ) My family is a Cristian Asian family so we forbid ourselves from any substances or abuse or any of the nasty stuff but my siblings and I get ignored alot cause my parents work for 8 – 10 hours each day. I didn’t knew my brother had the balls to say that to me tbh cause his more of the “scapegoat” Lol

  • I had the mascot/class clown, except I was actually the oldest. The reason I joked around so much about anything I could, was somewhat because I was hiding the self-disappointment and guilt I had, since my parents got mad for every little mistake I made. I joked around about my depression mostly. But, most of my friends could relate to me, and laughed with me rather than at me when I made the jokes, because we were all laughing it off. And hearing their laughs and seeing their smile made me happy, I just wished it was for another reason. Later on though, we all found coping mechanisms, some of us struggling more than others, but we pushed through it, and we are feeling much better now and can talk about what we went through rather than keeping it all bottled up. We are living much happier now. -Doughnut Dreamer

  • I’d be the hero and lost child. Getting good grades was my way of blending in as to not be a problem, while I felt it was right to clean things up and take care of others in the family since they didn’t know what to do/needed guidance. Of course, I had a point where I was the scapegoat, but I didn’t want to be. I would act out as a way to get assistance from what was happening at home (abuse of all kinds). I didn’t like being the problem child though, so I went into a different household until things were settled enough that I felt safe going back. That’s enough about me though, I hope everyone who had any type of abuse in their household is doing alright and feels safe now <3

  • I don’t have a dysfunctional family, but I’m pretty sure I identify as the lost child, especially when I’m upset about something. When I was 9, my parents had just adopted who is now my 17 yr old brother, and in the time we were fostering him, I was told “you’ll only make arguments between you and him worse if you react” which I as an almost 13 yr old, I understand why I was told that bc my brother is one of those people who hates being proved wrong and it’s not his fault either why he’s like that, but as an 8 yr old, I didn’t really know how to properly do the “gray rock technique,” so I just ended up suppressing my emotions and now I just become this emotionless, speechless being whenever I’m upset. I want to open up about it to my family, but there’s still that little part of me that says “Ehh, but you hate confrontation, and what if they judge you? Just keep it to yourself for now” And I don’t know what to do

  • I’m sorta a mix of hero, lost child. My parents didn’t really know how to raise me and my dad specifically had a lot of trauma from his family he was accidentally repeating onto me. I have a very strong sense of justice so I argued a lot and I hadn’t been diagnosed with autism yet so a lot of the time I was mistaken for the scapegoat, when in truth my needs weren’t being met and it was causing meltdowns that everyone thought were attention seeking tantrums. When my needs were met, I was a perfect, gifted, obedient, respectful, and unproblematic child. Me and my family have gotten a lot better now. I am diagnosed with autism so my parents are more aware of my needs, they frequently say they feel stupid for how they didn’t notice sooner. It’s not their fault, I’m their only child after all. No one can prepare you to raise another human being, especially a disabled one.

  • I’m not fully the ‘hero’ role in my family, none of us had to raise each other. But I did raise my self and I’m successful and driven to stay that way. I wasn’t ever given the option to not be successful, just in a depressing term ‘perfect’ to my friends. I’m not close to being a scapegoat because I’ve never lashed out. I’m afraid of the consequences if I do. I’m definitely a big portion of ‘the lost child’. I’m always isolated, I prefer it that way. My family is mostly toxic, sad, or tight. That’s why I don’t interact or ask anything from/with them. They’ve done nothing but hurt me, only the eldest sibling (my oldest brother) has listened and cared for me. I’m only ‘the mascot’ when ever I’m near my family. Like I said they’re toxic, sad, and tight. They gave me trauma that I know can never be undone. I love them I truly do, but they’ve ruined me. I’m waiting till I can cut them off and finally be free. Only then is when I can start making myself better and happy. (Sorry if this was to much, just needed to get that off my chest.)

  • I’m the perfect mix of scapegoat & lost child. I act out a lot with my dad because he was probably one of the main reasons I come out as harsh towards him and my little sister but I’m also the lost child because I try to stay quiet, try to just do what I’m told unless I disagree with it, I don’t really ask for much (At least from my dad), and I sometimes feel isolated especially when I’m just starting to come out to people in my family about identifying as bisexual even though I’ve known for at least a year & a half.

  • For me, even though i grew up in a relatively stable family, it’s a mix between… actually, all of them. I’m frustrated at my family and act out sometimes, but I usually fly low under the radar and get praised because of my skills. What my family fails to mention is that they berate me for my Chinese. Because of all the arguing and fights in my family and trauma in my friendships I’ve grown to subconsciously isolate myself from others. I use my kindness and will to help hide or distract my pain, along with my brothers. But then again it depends on the situation.

  • I feel like Im a mix of all 4, mainly the lost child, despite being in a semi-fuctional family. I always try to fly low under the radar and ended up adjusting to my parents expectations, keeping stuff to myself and not asking for alot. I am always the one that gave my parents status because I was able to skip a level of math, hence, becoming successful and responsible at a young age, especially because I am expected to take care of my little brother. I always act out whenever my parents try to put unrealistic expectations on me because I am the opposite of what they Want me to be. I always use humor to cover up what im really feeling because im afraid what they’ll do if they ever know. Especially since im growing up in a homophobic, transphobic, strict Christian family, I always need to cover up what im feeling and who I am and how I feel about certain things cause if I even bother to try and say my opinion ill just get a lecture about “why im wrong” or “that im not going to heaven” and how I “need to change my opinion”.

  • I’m a mix of a lost child and a bit of a scapegoat child. I actually completely match the description of a lost child, following rules my parents give me,laying low in school and adjusting to everyone there I rarely ask for a lot of stuff and I often isolate myself but it isn’t that lonely at times. As for the scapegoat part I would often act out at my younger sibling due to the horrible things they called me or yelling at me for small things or absolutely no reason.I also view myself as the problem for most things when I am involved in it.

  • I’m the youngest, but all of these somewhat describe me, I use humour to cover my own problems up to help others, I adjust to everyone elses’ home living as to not bother them with my own problems, I’m always blamed for everything, I’m called the problem, but my sibling points out that I’m not the problem, the abuse was, every now and then. I take care of my siblings and I took the parent role on, because having a bunch of abused, unstable teenagers as parents was not a good idea, so I took the parent role, and helped all my siblings through their trauma, to be the better people they are today. I get the best grades, so sometimes I’m let off the hook, and I can skip the yelling for an hour. people think people like this don’t exist, they do. so help them. its the little signs that people ignore. change that. instead of being apart of their problem, observe them. be better. give help, because when you do, it will make it’s way back to you, in physical form, or mental. just like I did. I helped people get through their problems by just paying closer attention, to my siblings, friends and close cousins. you can do more help then what you think

  • I know I’m late but this fits my family pretty well. My older brother is the ‘hero’. Being the eldest he often looked after us as much as he could but as soon as he finished school and got a job, he got the hell out of our house. It was kind of like our shield was broken. My older sister is the ‘lost child’ mixed with ‘scapegoat’. Everything bad that happens to her is blamed on herself even when it is completely not her fault. She’s rebellious with the rules but also kind of blends into the background. My younger brother is definitely the ‘mascot’. He distracts us from a lot of our problems but he often gets pushed to the side in our family. He gets what he wants, annoys us but also brings us joy. Finally it’s me.I’m the ‘scapegoat’ and ‘hero’. I normally get blamed for everything and my parents take their anger out on me. When my older brother left I kinda became the centre of expectations. Im gonna bring success to the family, I have a wide range of options ect. I cut my hair short and my parents did not react well to that but it was my way of saying I have control over my own life. It’s hard to explain without spilling my whole life situation but this article described me and my siblings perfectly.

  • As someone who had an abusive household for over ten years and watched all my step parents see me being hit and did nothing whatsoever, i begged for him(my dad) to not kill me at one point, i saw abuse and lived through it. I will never forgive anyone for not helping me. I tried my hardest to be the hero, but i was really the scapegoat, im blamed for everything and get yelled at for my dad problems. My dad did substance abuse ever since i was 8 and he has been drunk most my life. There are moments he can be a dad, i try to be the one thats the lost child, to follow the rules by, getting his beer, holding his cigarette, and even lying to my sister for him, i always wanted attention from him, i died when i realized he wouldnt, hes a druggie and a alcoholic. I love him, but he ruins me. He sexualizes me at times, and even shames me about my weight, i try my hardest at school and ruin my mental health just to make him proud. To anyone out there whos suffering from parents with substance abuse and alcohol addiction, and if your being abused, please reach out. Maybe your like “its just discipline!” Do they constantly hit you for things that werent wrong? Did they ever hit you because something bad happened in their life? I blamed myself, i told myself and even convinced myself it was my fault. It was not. So please seek assistance if your suffering from these issues and problems i deal and dealed with, also if i say just dad for abusing me my mom left when i was 5 she was doing substance abuse and tried killing my sister for being tan.

  • i have a mix of all, “the hero” i take care of everyone in the family, the pets, myself, and sometimes about my mothers issues. “the scapegoat” some comments of my family towards me makes me feel that im the problem on the family, i dont get straight A’s and they compare me with my brother that is in university/college, and sometimes my family bullies me. “The lost child” i always keep the head low, trying to keep the standards of my family of my body and studies, i get easily adjusted to every environment, i dont ask anything never, im always alone. “The mascot” when i was little i was perfectly like it, i was a very happy kid, this is still going on, but now i use it to cover my very low self esteem and my pain.

  • Im definitely the scapegoat, i could never handle the abuse in my home so in times i acted out and did things i wasnt supposed to do, in result i became the problem. The center of attention. The reason our family was dysfunctional. I was blamed for most problems including things like “your the reason we act this way!” Or “your always the problem!” It always came from my parents, barely ever my siblings because they knew i was struggling too. I was always mentioned as the “bad child” or the “one who gave up” my parents seemed to think i was the only reason for their problems, at some point i could be..i could have broke a window by accident which made the whole family fight, but all i wanted was a functional family, a good home.

  • I was definitely a mix between the scapegoat and hero. I was always the first to be blamed for anything and had to witness most of the dysfunctionality in my family because my siblings would always hide from it. I was the one who took care of my parents when they couldn’t take care of themselves and i was the one who was always being ripped from side to side whenever I was one on one with either of my parents. it was always either “your mother is terrible, don’t listen to a thing she says.” or vice versa. considering I was the youngest at the time, middle now, it takes away from the whole ‘perfect youngest child’ stereotype. ever since we left my dad tho I was completely a scapegoat because our family remained disfunctional and I was a very rebellious kid when it came to authority. everyday we’d have arguments about things and I’d always end up the one being ganged up on and criticised for every little detail. being the youngest sucked, man. 😭

  • I can safely say that my childhood home was stable, albeit my parents fought sometimes. However, it sometimes felt like my siblings (and formerly me) we having a full on war against dad. As the eldest, some of the Hero traits were embedded into me, such as successful grades and accomplishments. However, most of the time I acted much like the Scapegoat role. I would always fight, be hateful and rash, and hide away from everyone. This is mostly due to my ADHD-C and Anxiety, though. My younger brothers each fit every other role well though. The oldest of the 3 was the Lost Child, the middle one acted EXACTLY like the scapegoat, and of course the youngest, most pure one (who has had the worst injuries, I may add) is the Mascot. My family is chaotic, and often arguments ensue, but we still love each other, even if we possess different veiws.

  • I’m a mix of the hero and the scapegoat. Pretty contradictory. I do act out a lot and argue with my parents alot and I rlly don’t like myself much because of it and because of what my parents would tell me. Being consistently called lazy and retarded and other negative names for a very long time along with the enforcement of discipline has caused me to assimilate/internalize those things and I ended up hating myself so much to the point where I used to outright abuse myself and put myself down in so many situations. My extremely low view of myself in turn caused me to put everybody else in my life on a pedestal, because I felt like I was a “bad person” and from my personal beliefs, “bad people deserve bad things”, which only enforced my self-punishment and my emotional instability that would lead to all the acting out. It also caused me to view my parents like that because I was actually aware of how unhappy I was because of them and would use that as the excuse to act out and fight with them. I had also assimilated/internalized all the extremely high expectations of me, and used the punishment I would inflict on myself to be the driving force that would cause me to push myself to meet my expectations (like how I used to be punished and use that fear of it as a way to avoid it). I’m considered very smart and very self sufficient (almost to my own detriment) but (as always with these kinds of situations) I never felt “good enough”. Sound familiar? All in all, a really fucked up and complicated situation that is too complex to go in depth here, but luckily I’ve managed to fully break out of that insanity and only worry abt myself and not focus on “being good enough” or being a “bad person”.

  • Im both the “hero,” and the “lost child,” I’ve always done as told and I’m a major people pleaser, i tend to stay quiet and try not to cause any issues, while also adjusting my personality based on the person im communicating with. I’ve honestly lost all sense of self and I’m unsure what my actual personality is besides this, but i have also always been so smart and have always helped my younger siblings through the tough situations. Im the eldest daughter/first born, so I’ve also went through the most trauma out of my siblings who were born years after most of the events happened. The abuse sadly started a year or so after my birth, but now I’m doing a lot better and so is my (heart patient, sober of 4 years,) mother. My (Bipolar, manipulative, and physically abus1ve + ex – airforce) father has sadly died, but i think he would’ve been proud of where i am now. Even though both of my parents have caused a lot of pain to our family, especially my dad and his side of the family, I’ve forgiven both and they are doing a lot better. My dad is in a better place, or so i hope <3

  • Definitely lost child and mascot. I have a lot of adhd symptoms(I haven’t gotten any diagnosis), which leads to getting blamed for not paying attention and not doing good in school because of how inattentive I am even though I used to do well when I was younger. Alongside that, I got the daddy issues so growing up with a dad that didn’t want me made me want more attention, resulting in me being more outgoing and loud, while still wanting to be independent and not rely on anyone in fear they might leave me.

  • I was 100% the lost child. I can’t remember a rule that I broke purposely, I never really got noticed, I was extremely isolated, and I barely had any friends. And I know this one wasn’t included, but I was also a peace keeper. I tired my hardest to keep the family together, and so far, I’m succeeding!!

  • I’m an only child but I realized recently that my parents are neglecting me and manipulating me. (I prefer not to use the word “abuse”, but it often feels like that.) I relate to the first role. An overachiever, constantly taking care of myself, not having my parents be parental figures, and when I have a flashback (I have undiagnosed or self diagnosed PTSD from a guy in my class, I don’t want to talk about it.) I have to take care of it myself, because I don’t have a diagnosis for PTSD, so it’s all in my head. Just like how my dad hitting me was all in my head and he actually did apologize every time. In fact, my parents didn’t even realize that I had symptoms for ADHD until we went to the psychiatrist and they said I have severe inattentive ADHD. Being a parent for myself and raising myself is so exhausting, but it’s fine, I’m okay with being an adult for my entire childhood. I just feel like being neglected, having to make my own meals, having to entertain myself, having to do everything myself is not the way childhood and teenhood should go. ❤Thanks for reading my vent❤

  • update #1 (2/20/24): im kind of the mix of the hero and the lost child. i am driven, responsible, though i stay under the radar and try not to ask for much at the same time. i do feel lonely at most times but being the “parent” of my siblings means to covers my inner feelings and enjoy life. update #2 (3/7/24): i’ve just turned 17 and i was kicked out recently. i have a job now and i’m living off my aunt for like $50 a month. my aunt is the only reason i wound be on the street so thanks to her.

  • man here we go, so as the oldest child, im a mix of the hero, lost child and the scapegoat. I feel like I’m the one responsible taking care of every little thing resulting from my younger siblings’ assignments to chores, and I have to take time to get done with my work without any explanation like im expected to do all this. 2020-2022 were the worst years of my life, I remember being so isolated that I didn’t even make friends anymore, or got anxious whenever I had to talk to someone, was kinda like in my own shell and no one paid attention to all the things I went through and how damaged I got. I never even asked for therapy. That’s not the worst part about this, the worst part is that despite doing all this, getting good grades to impress my parents, not asking them to pay for any sort of therapy because I know it’s expensive, helping my siblings out, listening to other’s problems, having to deal with the bs at my house, im still called useless and I don’t think anyone realises in my family that it’s fuckin hard to be me. I’ve gotten down bad anger issues because of it and I hate myself for it. I remember my severe sh from a few weeks back, I was just so upset and I couldn’t hold the urge back anymore. And then my siblings who get favoured even if they behave like shit is just so frustrating because I know I’m a responsible person but I need appreciation too yk? Anyone has time to yell at me but they don’t realise that I’m a human who’s just trying to survive and quit the urge to kms, doing all this to impress my parents and still receiving bullshit is just so embittering and painful to handle.

  • I’m defined a mix between the hero and the scapegoat. Having divorced parents really isn’t easy. I only have a younger sister since my older sister apparently died at birth. I had to take care of my mother most of the time since she was always sick because of the stress my father had caused her and to calm down and protect my sister whenever my father tried to do something bad to her. I didn’t have any friends at school but I wasn’t upset yet because I considered it as a “distraction” back then and I wasn’t sociable at all. It was a very hard time for me. However, if you wonder, yes, I’m alright now. I’m still dealing with my father’s sh¡t but it’s almost over. My mother has got over her depression and my sister helped me make some friends that have a lot in common with me. I’m just glad I never gave up.

  • I’m a mix between all of them, but the intensity of each role changed with time. When I first entered school, I was most likely a mix between the mascot and the hero, I never had problems with grades and was probably responsible, I was also popular, very well liked, most people could rely on me, I also had some traces of the lost child, but they were barely noticaeble. As I grew up, of course things started to change, my grades were still good and I still didn’t have problems with my family, or anyone at all, but I started to loose friends, I started to push people away and it happened so fast that it frustrated me, at least a little. During that time I had a big fight with my friends and what was a group of four got divided into 2 pairs, that wasn’t a problem for me, until the friend I had stayed with decided to take a break from me, of course that made me sad, and probably frustrated, but I still had other activities to cover up how lonely I felt(probably), I remember vividly complaining to my mother that she didn’t let me have any pets(I was an only child, I never left home and interacted mostly with adults when I was outside of school), other than the loneliness problem, me and my family could be considered “perfect”, except for the fact that my parents were divorced, my mom remarried and my father was dating my current step-mother. My father had adopted a dog(early 2017), due to mine’s and my step-mother’s incistance and that distracted me from my loneliness(I had already made up with that friend that wanted a break, but I wasn’t as popular).

  • i’m a mix between the ‘hero’ and the ‘scapegoat’. my family wasn’t so good as their parents thought it was. i appeared as a parent figure for the majority of my siblings lives since my father was either busy with work or drunk.. my mother–she didn’t like me much. so my sisters and baby brother were dependent upon me and it wasn’t the easiest lifestyle for a 10yo but what else could i do? besides just stay in my room and not really eat or come out. school was rough and up until middle school, life was hard. now, my ‘scapegoat’ part ended beginning my second year in middle school. and that’s it.

  • I can definitely see all of these traits within myself. “Scapegoat” & the “Mascot” are newer traits for me, but I’ve always played the “hero” or “lost child” role. I have a younger sister and my parents used to argue very frequently, so I would usually just hang out with her and stuff. I never really asked for much, and I usually follow everyone else’s moods. Lately I’ve seen myself getting a bit more rebellious, and disobeying my parents a bit more often than usual, I’ve also seen myself starting making jokes when someone brings up a sensitive topic or I would make jokes about my family issues.

  • I May not come from a dysfunctional family. But I am most likely mixed of the Scapegoat and the Mascot. I act out whenever i feel very frustrated or upset, but when it comes to problems in the family. I simply try to make the atmosphere Happy and Normal, i just try to make everyone distracted for a while just so they wouldn’t worry so much.

  • Im a mix of scapegoat, lost child, and hero honestly cause I listen to my parents but they always blame me everything because I’m the oldest and I that I need to take care of my siblings but I do take care of them. I make them food, clean my room, clean the living room, and sometimes even clean there room. I understand that a lot of people are venting in the comments and sorry for venting even more knowing that but I hope that your ok and your mental health is still healthy even tho a lot of people r venting

  • I’m probably a mix of the hero, scapegoat and lost child. My family isn’t abusive or anything, my parents are just barely around. I’m the 4ths of 6 children but i take care of my little brother and sisters, and my older brothers look after me. Since we don’t see our parents too often, it’s usually just me, my 2 sisters, 3 brothers and my dogs to look after eachother. Im grateful for my siblings because without them, I probably would’ve gone insane since I developed adhd and stage 2 depression at the age of 9.

  • I am a mix of “The Hero” and “The Scapegoat” because I often end up taking the parental role, ie; taking care of my siblings, making sure they’re fed, etc. yet my parents often blame me for several of the problems and tell me that I don’t do enough, or I should go back on medication just because I cried once. Or they threaten to send me to a psychiatric hospital as a punishment for doing something my siblings would’ve never been punished for. Which. Is unfortunate.

  • My brother was the hero at the beginning. He got good grades even though it was never enough for my dad, he basically thought me everything i know. I was a lost child. Now my brother is the scapegoat and I’m the mascot. While my mom is a good parent my dad grew up in a surrounding where violence was normal, he doesn’t drink or hurt us that bad but he hits us and hurt our feelings with harsh words. He is a good person but he genuinely didn’t know that what he did was wrong. But that was the past and I’m really happy to say that he is trying to control his anger nowadays.

  • I’m a mix of scapegoat and mascot; my dad never really liked me even when I tried to please him and my brother was always the favorite throughout my entire fathers side, however he didn’t notice, and he soon adopted our fathers abusive ways towards our mother’s and our family (not my mum’s side, ily you guys) hatred towards me, and started bullying me. At first it was just teasing, but over time it’s… escalated. And I’ve always tried to make jokes about life to cheer up my self and everyone else. I wish we hadn’t moved to England, if we had just stayed in China our life would be so different. The only downside would be I neve met Cleo, and I wouldn’t have a lot of traits I do now. Anyways, ty for everyone who actually fully read this, hope you have a good day, (insert name of person you worship in your religion) bless you.

  • I’m a mix between all of them somehow. But if I had to say I’m the hero . Being the oldest I took care of all the kids, kept them away from the adults and took care of them. Gave them orders, cooked, cleaned, distracted. Sometimes I’d even give some of my precious things to them knowing I might get in trouble if I lose the things or damage them but usually distract the elders by my grades or studies.

  • Growing up, my family wasn’t to bad. My father was always drunk but he wasn’t violent. We didn’t even notice until my mother found out. I might be the hero, because I always try to get my younger sister out of the room and out of the way when our parents argue. I try to shelter her from it. I could also be the lost child because I feel for asking for something. I try to be as much of a helper as I can. I stay in my room, to not get in the way. While writing this, I realised that there might be some slight trauma, despite the situation not being so bad.

  • I am somewhat the scapegoat, the lost child and the mascot. Reason is, is that both my parent’s side of the family didn’t take the way I behaved well, and It was already difficult enough for me to keep standards between the two, bc they were on a thin line when it came to accepting the other. Another reason is that both sides see me as this spoiled brat who never got any form of dicipline at all, when I literally used to get hit by my dad for the littlest of mistakes that I would make. And not only that, my grandma from my mom’s side even said to my face that I’m some sort of a monster, someone who just wants to hurt people. This was because of the constant accidents between my younger cousin and I, that often leave her sobbing, but wasn’t even my fault or in my control. My grandma always say that I did on purpose and I never did. I also always tried to stay under the radar, or just prefer to be far away from people whenever there’s opportunity. I never really ask for much because I don’t want to feel like a burden to anyone, but this in turn makes my family think that I’m just a rogue child who doesn’t want to get certain things straight. Although, I do end up making a lot of puns, dark or adult jokes often to atleast have a good atmosphere for once, just to have a reason to feel good about myself. So, yea.. I hate my childhood with all my soul

  • When I lived with my dad I was a mix between the scapegoat and the lost child. I would obey rules and try my best to be as respectful as possible, but my dad and little brother blamed every little thing on me, and every time I would just step just a bit out of line I was labeled “ungrateful”, “greedy”, “selfish”, things like that. I couldn’t catch a break or get any sort of privacy so I did everything I could to stay out of my dad’s house like going to the park, a friend’s house, the library, hell I would even go take out the people’s trash in the apartment complex near my house just to get away from him.

  • I’m not sure if my family is what you would actually call ‘dysfunctional’ but it’s just kind of chaotic. I kind of see myself as mostly ‘the hero’ and ‘the lost child’, but I do also have a bit of ‘the mascot’. I am very responsible (I think), I try really hard to get good grades and I’m independent. And with that I usually adjust to everyone, I don’t ask for much, and I do feel isolated and lonely many times. But then I’m also trying to make people laugh with ‘dark-ish’ humor/jokes, which do come from my home life. So idk… maybe I’m just a mix of them. 🙂

  • I grew up in a dysfunctional family and only lately has everything gotten good and become functional but I, the middle child, was a mix between the scapegoat and the hero, did everything, became the parent, got perfect grades, did my best in everything I could do and basically lied about my family so we would get good publicity in our small town but I did bad things behind peoples backs because i thought “if im going to be hurt and ignored anyways i might as well do whatever i want”. My older brother was the lost child and was seen as a disappointment because of academics and wanst taught to know how to do much. My younger sister is the mascot and made me and my brother happy during the hard times. Just know that if your in this kind for situation everything can and will get better. ❤

  • As a kid under 10, I was a lost child, but when I got older, I was more of the hero and would show my love only by doing things for others. My brother when I had to take care of him for a week becuz my mom had to work early, he would sometimes mess up and call me mom, and he still does sometimes. I would like to add that my household family was ok except that my parents would sometimes drink (not get drunk) and would vape all the time. It was the out side family that was the problem, lots of drama always.

  • I prolly didnt go through what a lot of the rest of you here did but I was kinda a mix of the hero, always good grades, the scape goat, I got blamed a lot for things I was never involved in, and the lost child, I still struggle to this day to ask for things and its been years. Im the therapist friend, Im the one who doesnt really ask for emotional support when I really need it, Im the one who got blamed for years in my early childhood. Know you’re never alone 💙 You got this!

  • I’d say I’m a mix between the hero and the lost child. I have a younger brother that always hated shouting and fighting. Anytime something happened I was there for him: I told him that everything was alright and it would end soon hugging him for reassurance. I’d also do chores around the house to keep it clean when messes were made. Then again, I never ask for anything. I fly low under the radar to not get me or my brother in trouble much. My alone times increased since I became a older, to not get in the middle of situations that don’t regard me or my brother. I follow the rules, adjust to others’ desires and ideas. I mainly try to avoid conflict as much as possible.

  • I’m kind of like a mix between 3 scapegoat, lost child, and mascot I am very isolated and don’t tend to ask for many things or be outgoing in some ways when I’m alone, but if I do act out in any small way or get bad grades, I will become the center of attention/ the center of the problem and then I act like a mascot after it all happened trying to cover up what I feel and stuff because I can’t deal with emotions in a proper way, or in any way at all.

  • The lost child and I was the oldest. I followed the rules, I went unnoticed, I adjusted to everyone else, I didn’t ask for anything, and ended up being very isolated. I didn’t have the worst family, but we were poor, my mom and stepdad fought all the time, my mom is extremely strict and always mad, my stepdad is arrogant, my brother is autistic and used to act out all the time (including beating me up), and my stepsister is a huge bully (physically, verbally, and emotionally). I never fought back or anything. I was just kinda there. I dealt with it all silently

  • I’m a mix of the last three, being an only child. My family has always been a little messed up. My mother and uncle who both live with me smoke both weed and normal cigarettes. My grandma who also lives with me has been more like a mother to me than my actual mother even though she is also toxic and I can’t escape because I struggle with a lot of issues that make it extremely hard for me to get a job and keep it. I have ODD, depression and anxiety and PTSD which causes frequent panic attacks. I have trouble getting out of bed everyday because every time I do I get yelled at or blamed for something that wasn’t even my fault most of the time. In other words, I’m an easy target. I know very little about my family since we keep to ourselves and since I’ve lived in this house with them all my life it’s like I’m transparent, they know everything about me so therefore they have way more leverage over me than I do them. This makes it extremely hard to argue my points in conversations about problems we have and many other things. I look forward to the day I will finally die because then I don’t have to deal with anything anymore. I don’t fear death because in my eyes it is peaceful, an escape. There is more but I don’t really feel like talking about it right now.

  • Oddly enough, I’m a mix between the mascot and the scapegoat. For my overall family I found myself making ( or trying to make ) people happy or smile but the second I go home or something bad happens I tend to be blamed for everything bad in which then I act out and get angry, then family hates me even more.

  • When this is very accurate to the roles you and your siblings have- My brother is the youngest and definitely the mascot. It’s not really the humor that holds a distraction, but it’s now needy and dependant on others he can be. He’s autistic but he’s not mentally challenged, we’ve taught him how to cook simple packet instructions or wash dishes, and he can function like a normal human. But without us involved in the first place, he’ll forget to eat or do important things all together so its kind of pointless. My sister, the middle, is definitely the scapegoat. My parents try to make things work for her but since a young age, she’s always been a struggle, and would make things harder than they needed to be. Too stubborn, always wanted to be right, could never figure herself out which lead to frusturation from everyone in the family, including herself. Then there’s me. Being the oldest, I’m usually the hero and the lost child, because making yourself how your family wants is what keeps everything under wraps. I’m the good child, the one kept together, the one that causes the least problems. But that’s a whole second personality ive developed to keep them satisfied. Babysitting my siblings (both older than 10 now) because they can hardly (choose to) take care of themselves, being blamed for not making sure they get chores done or eat, sometimes dealing with them because my parents don’t want to. When I’m with my friends, I’m completely different. I’m loud, I’m unruly, I curse a lot, I speak my thoughts openly.

  • The Hero, Scapegoat, Lost Child, and a bit of a the mascot. In my family, as the hero i would make sure my brothers were okay, helped my parents, a child who became a bit of a therapist, was successful in some aspects that were good, and I helped my siblings escape bad situations. As the scapegoat I would lash out at others, got angry at a lot of stuff because of the stuff I went through, and I would just run away from others. As the lost child I would adjust to others, listen to rules, do as asked of me, never ask for much that I wanted or needed, I would not get in trouble often, and i would isolate myself and was treated as i was invisible. As the mascot i would tell jokes, treat situations as not that serious, and i did stuff that i didn’t want to do because I got attention..

  • I am between the mascot and lost child. I was very well liked from friends to teachers all throughout elementary and the most sociable in my family. I was under the title of the favorite so i felt like I always needed to be the favorite. Being a friend of everyone meant everyone’s different personalities to me, i matched there energy and personality to the point I forgot what was my personality when I realized it was already to late. I’m not funny so i just smile pretend to be happy. I get scolded a lot so every time someone lashes out at me i hold my tears but even if i do cry it’s not enough to let all the tears i held in. I let my parents assume everything about me so every time they say something about me about what i did or how i’m like I never corrected them most children are taught to respect, teachers, parents, and relatives which is why i let them assume about me because if i correct them or say something back to me it’s like talking back which means more scolding. I never asked for help and when i did it was just for an advantage so I stopped asking for help to not show my weakness. When i’m low on radar the only thing i can do is space out imagine something better. And hopefully it will come true.

  • I’m a mix between the mascot and the scapegoat. My family isn’t toxic though, I just act out due to being mentally ill, and not being in control of myself. For anyone wondering what mental issue I have, I’m bipolar, I have ptsd from a near death experience, and I’m currently awaiting results to see if my bipolar upgraded to schizophoaffective disorder, which comes in two forms. Bipolar schizoaffective, and depression schizoaffective. Basically what it is, is bipolar and or depression combined with schizophrenia. So people with the condition will have depression, mania if they have the bipolar type, hallucinations, episodes of psychosis, suicidal ideation, reckless behavior, and a lot more. So, I don’t act out and play the clown bc my family is toxic. It’s more of a cry for help. Update: I got the results of my psychological evaluation back. It upgraded to schizoaffective disorder.

  • I’m a mix of the scapegoat and the Mascot. I grew up in a functional family with no substance abuse or physical abuse. I tend to get frustrated or get angered very easily and sometimes I tend to make people laugh a lot, leaving a thick mask over my face to hide my frustrations and pain. I have a lot of insecurities about my body and have very low self esteem.

  • I’m a scapegoat and lost child I act out about certain things but follow most rules, im normally found away from everyone and get blamed for my family problems, I’m not well in school apart from art I have anger issues and get yelled at for not being able to control my emotions, I just realised I’m the youngest and the one with most problems damn my family is messed up

  • I was the one not in this specific family setting, having a supportive and healthy family. I may not be able to empathize with you all who were in this sort of family, but I do sympathize for you. I hope you all were able to find health and happiness outside or in your family, and I hope it got/gets better for you. Take care, and I love you. ❤ ~Sincerely, Evie

  • It feels very sad to me that me and my sibling fit these 4 dynamic in order, despite living in a non-dysfunctional home. My eldest sister was a role model to all of me and my other siblings, we all loved being around her because she was always accepting, and she often took care of us when our parents were at work. She also has a son, and is successful. She had to go through raising all of us, and had the burden of the eldest sibling. My 2nd older sister is a “rebellious” child. She suffers from epilepsy, therefore making her think that she is different and sufferers more than us. She never had good or genuine friendships, but she was (is) also toxic in a way. Despite how much my parents cared and payed attention to her, she ended up spoiled and bitchy (threatened to kill herself because our parents couldn’t afford the money to let her join a dance team, they made it work anyway.) Always yelling, speaking out about things, advocating for herself, she hold a lot of anger and often takes it out on me or my mom. My mom and her clash often because she goes against what is right, or does what she believes is ok, so they fight sometimes over small things. My sister and I are very different, in every way. She a bit behind in her education, while I am one of those smarter kids. She often compares me and calls me the golden child because our parents “love” me more than her. Is it my fault that I wasn’t a pain in the ass growing up? Despite her confidence and sense of rightness, she often does mean things without knowing, because it’s just something she is used to.

  • I never thought someone could describe my childhood so well, and already. 3 of these roles fit me too well The scapegoat, the mascot and the lost child I always follow rules, and try my best not to get in any trouble. But I’m pretty much a mentally and physically emotional mess. I had always managed to get my older siblings to laugh through any pain everyone goes through. No matter how terrible the situation is, I’ll always be by your side. No matter what. Humor is infarct my way of hiding any pain or sorrow as well, which is why I call myself an emotional mess. I’ve never had any addictions but most of the time any blame goes towards me and I act out and yell all the time, which I’ve gotten so used to that it barely feels as painful as it used to anymore. I love my siblings more than anything, my self esteem is low and I have a hard time studying so my grades are always low. My siblings feel more like family than my actual parents.

  • I’m the “hero”. My mom calls me Matilda, she brags to people about my successes and failures. I am always doing everything myself. Doctors appointments, therapy appointments, school sports, after school activities, studying, her doctors appointments. I make dinner when my grandma can’t, I do dishes, I clean after dinner, I clean her room, make her bed, make her breakfast and her lunch. It’s so hard to take care of my mom and brother and myself and my sports and my school work. It’s hard being the parent but being treated like a five year old. I’m a sophomore and drowning in responsibilities and still being told that I need to prove I’m responsible.

  • I’m a mix between the hero and the lost child. (I’m always mostly the parent, and care for everyone the best I can) I do get. Good grades as well, and I’m usually always being the “parent” for my younger cousins and some close friends. My cousins have also called me mom before without even noticing and I’ve mostly the one who holds their hands when walking somewhere (their like 4 and 2), feeding them when their hungry, and playing with them. Its quite fun but sometimes stressful. But I try to give them the best childhood I wasn’t able to have:D

  • I’m mixed of lost child and scapegoat, I get blamed for everything that happens in my family and I follow rules trying to lay under radar but still get blamed for stuff that aren’t related to our real problems and I never ask for stuff and still get called “spoiled” and all, I do act out tho but after that I try to follow rules and stuff so it doesn’t happen but it always happens (I’m youngest)

  • Im the hero and scape goat since i always clean things and my sibling dosent really and makes just a worse and then i get blamed from it and since im the middle my older brother just stays on his ipad or shouts he doesn’t even know how to make his own bed after everone ewts breakfast i fix every rooms and sometimes never get dinner or breakfast wich is fine for me and little brother he justs crys he doesn’t eat anymore and its making him skinny my dad says hes still a “baby” when he is 6 years old and that hes young to help me with putting the dishes away and i love my parents but i hate my siblings.

  • The lost child.. Hello there, a too early matured 11 year old here. Growing up, my father had real bad anger issues (dw he’s better now), which caused me to be.. well, not giving into the things I want (not need). I’d usually ask for things, and not be stubborn like (most/the ones I know) children my age. I’d usually stay in my room, wasting time and then wonder why the hell am I not enjoying middle school like others (I just started middle school). Unlike (most/the ones I know) other children, id worry about my parents’ money and try to not at all buy stuff or maybe ones with little price. (My parents always forget to give me allowance and usually don’t allow me to pay for myself, I have only paid sometimes) Thank you, also please don’t hate if you think some of the things that bother me are a bit unreasonable or if I’m overreacting.

  • Sadly I’m still with my family, I used to be more of the scapegoat but now I’m definitely the class clown type (though I’m not well liked hehe…) and a little mix with the scapegoat type still. I always try and cheer people up, it worked so well apparently that my family was shocked when I got diagnosed with depression and the fact that I’ve hurt myself and attempted suicide multiple times. I’m like that with my friends too, I’m like a golden retriever type kinda boy so I’m very energetic and happy all the time but when it’s night or when my dad talks to me is usually if not always when I cry and want to attempt suicide again. And my dad may not hit me much (keyword, MUCH), I still don’t feel safe whenever he’s home. He yells and blames everything on me. Not to mention he “doesn’t believe” in mental illnesses like depression and adhd which I might have. I have an older brother, I wish I hated him too, but I don’t. He’s bad too but I don’t blame him much since we’re both still kids and he probably is hurting me to match our dad. I hope he doesn’t grow up like him, I really really hope. Oh and my mom does nothing abt it she’s a nice person, just not smart enough to help her youngest son apparently :3

  • a mix of the last 3 tbh reponsible achieves good grades and things acts out out of anger and frustration is the “center” of the familys problems they ALLLL stem from me and the mascot i always put on a mask act like im a good kid makes sure my siblings are happy and the crazy thing is im the youngest

  • lately I’ve been isolated a lot since I’m in the process of moving schools for private reasons and it’s been over a month, I’m so sick of being constantly cooped up inside and barely talking to anyone but family irl, i get i can call them but it’s not the same as hanging with them and since it’s the middle of the year idk if I’m gonna get in before i have to go this other school where I’ll have no friends at all if i get in the other school i will have a few friends like my best friend and a friend of my sisters, sorry abt ranting i just needed somewhere to put this

  • my sister is the first one she is basically the parent bc my mom is..kinda sick in the head she doesn’t think like other people but my dad is working a lot, but always has time for us! and I’m the lost child and the mascot I try to make people laugh but sometimes it doesn’t work. I start to get a little sad but I hide it.. and I every single rule even if my mom yells at us..:(

  • Hero, Scapegoat and a mix of that mascot. I acted out Takes responsibility, i wanted to Prove myself that Im not really useless so i focus more in school but yeah really i Take care so that I maybe become kinda tired from it, and being a scapegoat, im Frustated and I become one of the center of the Issue Become very Anger issued but yet keep it simple for myself, and mixing it up as a mascot really that i try to follow the rules in school Being nice and Going outgoing, but all of that is to Cover up My stress, Anger, and Depression, I’ve had it for my life, And I’ve really tried to Get 100+ or If its lower its fine, but Im egoistic And Broken Self That i had to turn And change around. im fine now im just the hero and Scapegoat still. Yeah i still get blamed, But its alright

  • I was the hero and the class clown I made everyone feel better I didn’t grow up in a abusive family but me and my siblings had father problems because we had different dads my dad lived in Maryland and barely spent anytime with me my little brother and sister dad lived in California and it was just my and siblings in Virginia I had a single mom who didn’t have much money but still cared for us so a lot of times I had keep my siblings happy by joking around I also had to take care of them like I made them dinner I had to learn how to cook when I was 5 by time I was 9 I could cook on the stove make dinner breakfast lunch everything

  • im a mix of the scapegoat and mascot I disobey when I am frustrated (most of time) and I love trying to make my siblings laugh when it gets hard (even if they hate me too much to listen) scapegoat cut my hair cut frustration hates obeying parents and younger 2 siblings (they hate me and the older ones already moved out) I act out I get blamed for everything in the house I am they problem mascot outgoing (to hide) I am a good distraction for siblings and rarely parents my humor covers up all my pain and I don’t cry unless I have an excuse / period or am sure im alone (in my room)

  • in my family its, oldest child: scapegoat, middle child: Hero, and youngest (me): Mascot, so we have everything except lost child bc i’m a little bit of lost child but since i’m extroverted fun to be around out going i stick out like a bright light bulb in a room thats full of dim light bulbs and no one is ever worried if i like them or not bc they can see it when i hangout with them, so i don’t really fall low under the radar 🤠🤠😭😭😭 (TY FOR READInG ALL OF THIS 💗💗💗)

  • As the youngest trans kid in the family. Im a mix of the scapegoat and lost child and the class clown I don’t ask for anything unless it’s my dad bc my sis or mom will go crazy and be really really mad. Also I’m the “problem” and my mom tells me “go back to your father” even as a joke which hurts And I’m a distraction and really had a lot of issues.
