Mystic Gohan is a form that allows Gohan to reach 100 of his potential, making him stronger as he grows. Initially, Gohan was about the level of Super Saiyan 2/3, but in Dragon Ball Super, he becomes the strength of Super Saiyan Blue. The official name is Ultimate Gohan, and Mystic Gohan is an unofficial fan name for this form. Gohan’s power increases dramatically when the full potential of his dormant power is unlocked during the Buu Saga.
In the 2022 film, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, Gohan reached an even more powerful transformation, the Gohan Beast Form. After the ritual was completed, Gohan obtained power stronger than his Super Saiyan 2, without changing his appearance. Later, Piccolo retrained Gohan to peak condition, allowing him to access dormant power again. However, his continued lack of warrior spirit persists.
Dragon Ball has debuted a new power-up transformation for Gohan in the latest Dragon Ball Super movie, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. This new form seems to make Gohan the most powerful Saiyan yet. Despite his massive strength, Gohan no longer goes Super Saiyan, and his Ultimate form blows away his previous power levels. His power increases dramatically, reaching the point of being stronger than his father Goku as a Super Saiyan.
Mystic Gohan is stronger than SSJ3 Goku at the end of Z and Super Buu, who is almost at the same level as SSJ3 Goku and SSJ3 Gotenks. Ultimate Gohan is the character’s most powerful form, dramatically stronger than other established Saiyan transformations including Super Saiyan 3 and Super Saiyan Blue.

What is Gohan’s strongest form?
Gohan Beast is an evolved form of Gohan’s Ultimate state, resulting from his awakenings since childhood. It is currently his strongest transformation in recent media. Piccolo believed Gohan would be the strongest in the world before achieving the form, and in promotion for the film, Toriyama referred to him as being stronger than anyone. 📹 Ultimate Gohan Explained
Mystic Gohan Explained IS HERE! After Dragon Ball Super Episode 88, we finally found out the TRUE NATURE of Gohan. On this …
I feel like the retcon is entirely because they wanted to have their cake and eat it too to justify explaining why Gohan can use Super Saiyan. But also it was Toriyama who decided Gohan would be using Super Saiyan in the first place in RoF, and there was zero explanation for why that was the case. Really, it’s the most elegant solution I can think of to RoF. That’s kind of what I feel refers to a lot in Super Hero. It is cool that the ‘battle instincts’ idea does seem to be the same thing as in the Super anime. There does feel like there’s consistency there.
Ultimate in Z was Gohan websiteing his full power after his hidden potential drawn out . He didn’t need to turn SSJ to use more power Now in Super, it is treated like a form when he goes through the SSJ forms until reaching ultimate. I think Beast is an evolution of his hidden power awoken with rage after he trained for a while.
It’s funny that this jarring (and unnecessary) change has never really been addressed before. Gohan’s Ultimate Form (or “Mystic Form”) from the beginning (meaning the Manga) was presented as an overall upgrade to Gohan rather than a form he has to transform into, but I will say that it’s easily explainable that rather than Super turning into a form per-say but that Gohan due to years of not training had to invest himself to the point where he could tap into that power again. The Beast Form that Gohan has now serves as the “Super Saiyan” Form of his Ultimate Form, Gohan has in no better terms ascended beyond a Saiyan altogether similar to Ichigo becoming a transcendent being in his training to fight Hogyoku Aizen.
In the original manga (and the Dragon Ball Z TV series, by extension), Gohan’s Ultimate form was indicated to be a permanent transformation, but in Dragon Ball Z movie 13 and the Dragon Ball Super series (including the Super Hero movie), Gohan’s Ultimate form is a temporary transformation (as in a form that can be switched on and off like Super Saiyan). In Dragon Ball GT, it just disappears or was retconned to be similar to the power-up from the Great Elder of Namek. A couple of the Daizenshuu also refer to Ultimate Gohan as a transformation. In the Dragon Ball Super manga, Gohan said to Kafla that he wasn’t going to use Super Saiyan because he doesn’t do that anymore since he doesn’t need to. We should already know that Gohan’s Ultimate form unlocks the entirety of his potential and then some, while his Super Saiyan forms only unlock portions of it, so of course there is no need to transform into a Super Saiyan. That’s why we didn’t see Ultimate Gohan as a Super Saiyan in fights such as Gohan vs. Gotenks-absorbed Buu, Gohan vs. Hirudegarn, Gohan vs. Beerus, Ultimate Gohan’s fights throughout the Tournament of Power, etc. Likewise, that is why his Ultimate form allows him to evolve as his own person and not as a Saiyan, and Gohan chose this path all the way back during the battle with Buu. Just like in Resurrection ‘F’, Gohan in the Super Hero arc can’t access his Ultimate form and has to go back to relying on Super Saiyan, but this time, Piccolo “awakens” Gohan through Pan and causes him to transform into Ultimate Gohan.
Its obvious that they’ve decided to turn the potential unleashed states into tranformations because of what they did with ‘Power Awakening Piccolo’. Piccolo clearly transforms physically and its pretty much the exact same power up as Ultimate Gohan, it works the exact same way. The ‘Potential Unleashed’ power up is just a transformed state now.
Ultimate form also works to me as a great way to train like I imagined if a fusion got a zenkai both fighters will benefit permanently as a result multiplying while having access to and unlocking there potential potentially because power is multiplied on top of that, ur right ultimate Gohan is what powers he will have at his prime but if u are using a form like ultimate with zenkai wouldn’t that make your latent potential even more vass this making no limit to Gohan potential wich he already has. even as a kid i was like wait a minute what is this crazy oura there might be more here, old kai is one of my favorite charters becouse of this described his magical powers he gained from tht witch as kinda like the ability to turn a cat into a lion, to me that is the beast form wich is the ancestors of cats in real life, so I originally thought gohan would be some kind of human great ape, something like goku in the anime when he was going ssj3 and they had him looking like ssj4 a bit with the great ape furr indicating the ouzaru and there ancestors dna the ouzaru to me was the lion of the Saiyan race but then gohan didn’t look any different but the new movie makes so much sense now cus he isn’t just normal in appearance we finally see this lion equivalent to the saying hybrids, his beast form kinda kave man ish, maybe if goku had gotten elder kai ability then he too could have a beast maybe it would look more like a ouzaru man, i also hope they dont give beast to the original cast unless its a human or somthing else maybe broly could use it to show us a pure beast vs a hybrid
I really hope that when these chapters go to print they have Gohan doing some off screen training on that page at the end of chapter. Just ☝🏾friggin page mannn. Even if it’s image training at his desk, I’d be satisfied knowing how tf he learned the special beam canon. That could explain why he always has work to catch up on. 🤔🤔
The Ultimate State was always something Gohan had to tap into. To quote the old Kai, “Fire it up like that Super Saiyan thing ” It functions passively in terms of energy utilization, but it’s still a special mental/spiritual state that must be engaged. You will never see someone ‘knock Gohan out of Ultimate’ the way someone can be knocked out of Super Saiyan {unless he’s completely knocked the fuck out}
1) Never trust 100% in VIZ translations, errors such as Gohan and Kefla dialogue in manga are an example that creates confusion that then must be read between lines to solve the holes left by them 2) Actually since Super was introduced, the Ultimate State was always reimaginated or presented to be indicated by being a certain power of the need not only of good physical conditioning and training, but Gohan needs its present fighting instincts, which is the constant problem in his character in present times to solve. In DBSSH, did not lose as much power as in Resurrection F (for something he was training to use the Makkankosoppo in secret) but he must awaken his battles instincts to be in his better condition. In other ways, to use the full extent of his dormant inmense capabilities, he needs to have the warrior mentality, the “battle instincs” and makes sense for his character in modern times. He has his powers unleashed thanks to Old Kaioshin, but not only has to train his body, also he must have the mentality of a warrior. In fact, to obtain a power so massive and great that he obtained as Gohan Beast, he didn’t lose so much power as Resurrection F, so that form makes reason that right in the time of the SH movie events Gohan has his inmense potential in top condition with no loss of efficiency but again it needs his battle instincts and desire to fight awaken to be his most powerful self.
I believe that Ultimate originally was his base. When he got resurrected in the Buu Saga, he was still in his Ultimate form, including the end of Z. Also, why didn’t he power down to his normal state, after Buutenks badly beat him up, before Dende healed him? The Super manga stuck to Ultimate being his base and not a transformation, like in TOP and Moro, up until this arc was adapted. Mixing this arc in with the manga has made Ultimate in the manga continuity confusing.
Idk I’ve always watched sub not dub but even going back to reread the chapters, they clearly say, he doesn’t need to transform anymore cause it wastes ki. That pretty much says transforming at all is a waste of time cause he’s unlocked all the potential you’ll ever have indefinitely cause this dude is the definition of a god.what boosts could a transformation give you that mystic/ultimate can’t absorb into itself?
To me, it always seemed like the Super writers didn’t really understand how Gohan’s Hidden Power worked, and just treated it like a form the way the games do. But the games have always treated different states as forms a character can just power up into. Like the way Piccolo can power up into his Merged states, and Cell can power up into his absorptions. Those are just articlegame mechanics though, in actuality, it’s a bit more complex – Especially with Gohan. As for GT, I’m not sure what was going on there. There was no mention that I can recall of why Gohan was back to using SSJ. The way I always conceptualized the Ultimate state (I thought the name “Zenith” would suit it) is that it completely invalidates transformations – maybe as an effect of the powers of the Kaioshin. It had the benefit of giving Gohan his peak power at all times, without costing stamina the way a transformation would. Basically imagine a bird that gained the power of levitation. It would no longer have to use it’s wings – that would just be needlessly tiresome. That’s Gohan’s Ultimate state – Or so I thought… I have some more theories and ideas about how the power could have been expanded and improved, but now that it’s just treated as another form, and an obsolete one at that – that’s all out the window…
I dont think its as complex as people thing. thinking of gohans power as a meter from 1-100, 100 being his maximum potential at any given moment, his ultimate form allows him to go straight to 100, while his super Saiyan forms may only bring up to 50-60. When gohan doesnt train, and becomes lax his ability to tap into his full potential becomes more difficult.
Tbh iam glad that gohan’s ultimate form is treated more like a super saiyan transformation it would’ve sucked if he completely lost the ability to turn super saiyan also it would have made no sense for super saiyan to work as a multiplier over his ultimate cause if it did he would have simply transformed against buu in DBZ.
Earthling emotions are more intense than that of Saiyans. They’re also more benevolent than the average Saiyan. All the mixed Saiyans seem to have greater potential as a result. 🤔 But they’re also less likely to realize that potential because they dont have the same battle lust as full blooded Saiyans. Thats the way I look at characters like Gohan and Trunks personally
Id like if the established “beast mode” as a “super” form basically “super human” instead of “super saiyan” so they can establish that every species has a super transformation but saiyan since they are a warrior race can activate them easier and gohans half saiyan nature allows him to tap into his super human powers easier but since its harder to achieve you need to be alot stronger to activate super human. Mystic form could basically be a half form of super human. This would give human charachers something in which to strive.
Lol that English line is absolutely correct and makes complete sense transforming has always came from a need, Piccolo needed to get stronger so he WISHED to have his potential unlocked and that Piccolo orange transformation only happened when his body realized his current state is still not strong enough lmao man yall find any reason to shyt on the English dub it’s getting old now
I get what yall saying. Not sure if i like it that way for gohan. It makes me wonder if elder kai unlocked one of the humans potential then how would it truely work if gohan uses his rage/batttle instincts to go into state. Does that mean it be same for other people as well just not as powerful as gohan. I wonder this because if you a good nature person thats that mean unlocked potential would be weaker? Or was it simply a special case for gohan rage/battle instincts to activate the form.
I have a question. I don’t know if it’s a dumb question or not but I’m gonna ask anyway So we always say that Gohan would’ve been unstoppable if he had trained for those 7 years right? But if his ultimate state is supposed to draw out all the potential power he could ever have up til that point, then wouldn’t that mean he would’ve only been as strong as he was in his ultimate form even if he had trained for those 7 years? Or am I just reaching on this one?😅
What the old Kai said was for gohan to do what he did to transform. And that transformations are just for show. What came out instead of transforming was all his powers Because he didn’t need to transform to get it out. But yes its a retcon. But it can fit the show since he lost that ability due to neglect. So he had to relearn to tap into it.
Ultimate gohan has always confused me. Im trying to figure out multiple things from dragon ball, since i am using it in the future. It’s just as you said, his latent potential pulled out for him to use. At first i though it was potential from his base form which meant stacking with super saiyan was possible. Then elder kai said you have to transform like a super saiyan to use it. I always thought it was more of a power up rather than a transformation, more similar to kaioken. The most confusing part is how does the ultimate form potential unlock work. Does super saiyan play into it? Is the boost always the same? Does the transformation ever get stronger? If so then how? Does it technically mean that you can’t get any stronger than the limit ultimate gives you? What factors depends how much of an increase ultimate gives you? Does the multiplier of ultimate decrease as your base strength gets stronger? Its all so damn confusing. I wish they would explain shit maybe similar to how jjk does it.
I have tried in the past to share this small detail with you about how the Ultimate Gohan transformation works, I left a long message on your fb page after I had watched your article ultimate Gohan explained. It’s when elder Kai is performing the ritual he states that there is a 20hr. Power raising section now this statement becomes important later in my evidence and a little while after he says this Gohan trys to call his bluff bc he doesn’t believe that elder Kai is actually doing anything to increase his strength, now keep in mind that the ritual was not finished yet the “power raising” section of the ritual was stopped short. So elder Kai says go ahead fire it up just like that super saiyan thing you do, after he powers up it shows gohans face and his eyes are eyes are green like ss form but his hair is black like ultimate/base and elder Kai says see its working sit back down so I can finish. You might be aware of this and think that this doesn’t hold water but to me it would seem elder kais ability works on anyone bc there is an actually strength increasing element to the ritual. Gohan is just going to have bigger gains bc of his latent abilities but elder Kai said “i can take a person from a cat, to a lion” not just those who have strength lying dormant, he literally makes them stronger within the ritual. So when Gohan stops elder Kai early his power isn’t full raised yet so he’s stuck in the middle of ss form and ultimate form he doesn’t completely shatter that glass ceiling until elder Kai finishes the ritual.
In the android saga Vegeta explains that he became a super Saiyan through pure will and desire. the advantage here is that he knew it was possible because Goku had achieved the transformation prior. Vegeta just needed to figure out how. However when Goku first transformed he barely even knew it was a legend let alone possible. Thus in his battle with Frieza he transformed through anger driven by his need for revenge for the death of his friends. so when he explains to Gohan in the HTC about the power coming from need he’s talking through personal experience. Us, the audience, have so much more understanding of the lore than the characters because we see everything that happens to everyone from a third person perspective. I realise that Geekdom doesn’t like this dubbed line but i do think it’s correct because it’s personal to Goku and he isn’t about to teach his son how to do things Vegetas way.
Hm, I guess it’s easier to see Ultimate as a transformation if you recognize that the difference between that and the Super Saiyan forms is that the Super Saiyan forms are a path of power that is just what he has as being a Saiyan blooded individual, what Gohan manifests in Ultimate and maybe even Beast is the raw potential of his anger and other dormant power and having mastery and control over that. However the key to both Super Saiyan and the Ultimate form for Gohan is that he constantly looses the mindset to be battle ready which makes him have trouble because of the complacency he has durring peace times.
Never understood why they never took krillin, tien and even yamcha to elder kia to get their full potential unlocked it might have kept krillin and yamcha from given up on martial arts, if their potential ended up being a lot, which i think krillin’s would be, after all he is concidered to be the strongest human in the universe. lol
It seems like Geekdom hates a lot of things from the old English dub. “Power comes in response to a need, not a desire. You have to create that need.” – Goku (I’m sure he was just talking about unlocking Super Saiyan for the first time too…not every time you need to go to the form) No one had a problem with it until new Dragon Ball content come out and now the line is being spat at😞
Gohan could potentially be the best villain ever. A tragic supervillain to be exact. Like another version of Lord Drakkon. Jealousy of his father, being looked down by many that makes him drastically changed to a cold and heartless person. Gonna be like Batman VS Arkham Knight kinda thing. If they bringing Turles to the DBS/canon universe in the future, he could be use as a major supporting antagonist. As you can see, in Turles movie, he sparked an interest in having Gohan to join him as he recognizes the boy’s potential. By using that point of story, he could brainwashed Gohan’s mind and turning him into a tragic supervillain. Making Gohan as the new emperor of Saiyan race, thus calling him Lord Gohan and creating his new Saiyan army.
To me It feels like they turned “ultimate gohan” into a trasformation insted of it just being his regular state like how it was in z, which in my opinion is worse. It was way cooler in z, they did not need to make it a damn transformation. They probably did it to sell more products or something idk.
