Gale, a wizard in Baldur’s Gate 3, is a picky eater who can consume any magic item, even complete garbage ones. To feed him, players must select the appropriate dialogue option in response to one of these dialogues and choose a magical item. Gale will only consume certain artifacts, which can be noted by the message “Gale can absorb this item’s magic, destroying it”.
In BG3, the items must be in the party’s inventory, not in the chest in the camp. The items must be given to Gale when he asks for them. He can consume any magical item not blessed specifically by a deity, such as Absolute-powered items or divine items.
To feed Gale, players should only give him an item (rarity doesn’t matter) the first time he asks and wait until he consumes three magic items during Act One. In the grand quest log, there is no option on items that say Gale can consume them for players to consume them. However, Gale only needs three items to move onto the next phase of his quest in Baldur’s Gate 3.
In summary, Gale is a picky eater who can consume any magic item, but he only consumes certain items marked with “Gale can consume this” or similar. Players should only feed Gale an item the first time he asks and wait until he consumes three items during Act One to progress to the next phase of his quest.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is a massive game with branching paths and consequences for your actions. This guide covers finding and recruiting Gale, what happens if you leave Gale, and what happens if you decide to raid the Grove. How to have gale absorb magic?
In Act 1, Gale needs to absorb a magical item to alleviate his symptoms. To do so, go to your campsite and choose the option to “give Gale a magic artifact”. This opens a menu of all the magical items in your or your party’s inventory. Select one to offer and close the menu to proceed with his treatment. If you try to offer more than one, you’ll be prompted to select a single item instead.
Act 1 is filled with magic items, but some may not be useful to your party. For example, a hat that enhances Bardic Inspiration is useless without a bard in the party. Gauntlets that make unarmed strikes more powerful are most beneficial when worn by a monk. These items are good candidates to donate to Gale, but if you lack a bard, these are easy choices.

However, Hotfix 17, which is now available, has made Gale more lenient about his addiction. Larian, in a Steam post, explained that if someone doesn’t offer Gale a magic item every time, it doesn’t mean they won’t, and he will be more likely to stay around. Gale will no longer permanently leave the party if no magic items are offered during conversation, unless it’s clear that they don’t plan to do so.
Can you become a god with Gale BG3?
Gale’s transformation into a god offers a unique advantage for those who choose to romance him, either as a custom character or another Origin. Gale promises to return and ascend them to godhood, a promise he keeps. The new player god doesn’t know which domain they become, but this ending provides some comfort, especially for those who played Baldur’s Gate 3 as the Dark Urge and turned away from Bhaal, becoming a god in their own right.
What is Gale’s greatest flaw in BG3?
In Act 3, Dryad’s most significant shortcoming is his conviction that the optimal state of affairs would be a state of nonexistence, which can be achieved through a specific occurrence.
What happens if you don’t give Gale magical items?
Refusing to give Gale items can make him a liability, leading to weakened rolls and potential desperation. He may even leave the party and resent you for forcing his hand. If you collect too many items during travels, hand them off to party members or Gale himself. Remember to save the best items for yourself and give Gale items you don’t need anymore. You won’t get any bonus for giving him your best gear, so it’s better to hand off any magical artifacts you won’t be using.
How often does Gale need magic items?
In the first act of Baldur’s Gate 3, Gale, a human wizard with an Icarian backstory, needs to consume three magic items to move onto the next phase of his quest. However, it can be difficult to choose whether to give them up. Gale is one of 10 companions in the party, and his insatiable hunger for power has led to an unfortunate romance with the goddess Mystra. He needs to put the big kaboom off as long as possible by consuming magic items. “Magic items” in Baldur’s Gate 3 mostly refer to accessories and armor pieces with special spell-infused effects.
Some outliers include magic weapons and necessary quest items. Gale can’t consume every item, but he can be demanding for a while. Once he consumes one, it’s forever destroyed. Balancing the party’s need for useful magic items with Gale’s insatiable hunger for magic is possible with planning.
How to donate items to Gale?
Upon Gale’s request for a magic item, an inventory box will be generated, displaying the items that have been accepted. To initiate the donation process, select the item in question and then click the “Donate” button. It should be noted that the game may contain content that is not appropriate for all age groups. This may include general mature content, nudity, or sexual content. To update content preferences on Steam, select the “X” icon located in the upper right corner.

Gale doing everything in his power to aggressively eat all of my stuff then trying to seduce me at every opportunity is so accurate. Whether it’s eating your shoes or catching a rebound by trying to play “put the sorting hat on the Slytherin” this wizard does not take no for an answer. Love this game.
I swear, Gale is absolutely the easiest party member to ACCIDENTALLY romance by just being a decent person. 😂 I literally tried to romance no one on my second run but, because I kept feeding Gale and let him show me some magic, he ended up wanting to spend the night with me after the goblin camp and, even after I refused and (ironically) ended up in another relationship, he STILL ended up confessing his feelings to me. 😅
Gale: Wanna learn a bit about magic? Me: Yeah sure, I’d like to learn some basics of magic with ya buddy. Gale: Sure thing, do what I’m doing, wave your hands like this, speak the words Eekum Bokum. Me: Eekum Bokum Gale: Aaaand Light Go Poof Me: Aaand Light G- accidentally steps on a round rock and has to catch my balance Gale: MOOD RUINED! I’VE BECOME FLACCID AS A WET RAG! YOU’LL NEVER FUCK ME NOW! Me: I’m sorry, what?
Bro the accidental romance with gale was so fucking relatable. Thing is I was actually planning on romancing him anyway because he just felt the most intresting of the group and then he says he wants to take it slow, I flirted a bit, but then bam! Apparently he lied about taking it slow. I mean I wasn’t complaining as I was already intrested but like… seriously dude pick a lane are you wanting to have me strip at breakneck speed or take it slow and steady. MAKE UP YOUR MIND YOU MAGIC NUKE MAN!
Glad I am not alone, I misinterpreted every companion except the really obvious ones (Lae’Zel) and had to reject them and felt horrible, all because I wanted Astarion, who still won’t even give me the time of day. I do have a history of being nice and not realizing it was all flirt options though (que my surprised pikachu face at the end of ME1 when Kaiden showed up at my door).
I romanced Karlach (because duh), went for a long rest and then Wyll wanted to dance with me. I thought “pretty strange to be dancing in the middle of the night but sure, why not?”, dropped a quicksave just in case and when i realised he was getting a little too handsy i qloaded and rejected him. His disappointed and sad “…oh…” was brutal tho, like i’m so sorry but i’m just not gay!
Gale is my favorite character by far. I knew immediately the first scene with him in the game that I was going to love this guy. But I thought he was secretly evil. Because usually the people I like end up betraying me and harming me or breaking my heart into a million pieces, not in article games, that’s just what dating is like when you’re an Autistic Wizard. Anyways after realizing that he’s not secretly evil he’s just got to consume magic to satiate the bomb in his chest, I actually respected him even more as a character. This was the first result on YouTube searching ‘Gale from Baldurs Gate 3’. Anyways. I just really appreciate Gale. I’m not usually a fan of Wizards in fictional media because I usually find them an offensive mockery and characature of my craft which I take very seriously. But I feel differently about Gale. I feel like I can relate a lot to him on a deeper level.
It was mostly annoying because it was at a part of the game where we didn’t realize how plentiful magic items would become, so they feel far more precious at that time than they become later. Also, yes, multiple accidental romance lines started, where I have to click something like “I changed my mind” to get out of them, when I never had my mind going down that path to begin with! Why do all of my companions want to pork me, even the ones that I was barely ever polite to and that mostly dislike my decisions?!
As hilarious and accurate as this is, in the 2 playthroughs ive had, and as thorough as ive been in looting, i’d say there’s always 5+ magical items you never actually need, not to mention the combo gold sale value from klepto level hoarding and the cost of crappy greens from stores. It’s like he has a 1k gold req per act, no big deal really.
Playing a high charisma warlock tiefling that’s constantly impressing party members made the whole “everyone wants you” thing completely believable. Plus, guys don’t give a shit if your dating or even married to a woman, they’re going to hit on you regardless and only take “no” for an answer after you’ve had to turn into an icy bitch to turn them away – an even that doesn’t always work. So yeah. Completely believable lol
Everyone talking about Gale thirsting; idk why, but for me I was SO taken aback by Lae’zel in my game lol. Basically insults me 24/7, then on like my FIRST CAMP she’s asking to bed me. Seriously, I got her romance SO fast compared to literally everyone else. We only had neutral approval too lmao. IIRC my order was: Lae’zel > Astarion > Karlach > Gale + will (from the party) > Shadowheart
