To use a Vaal skill, its gem must be charged by collecting souls. Souls can be obtained by killing enemies, granting 1 souls per kill, or by damaging Rare or Unique enemies (1 or 6 souls, respectively, per 2 life lost with a 1 second cooldown). Once you have enough, the skill can be used from the skill bar. Using a Vaal Orb on a gem only gives it.
Vaal skills provide a strategic advantage by adding versatility to your character’s abilities. They can be used to unleash powerful attacks or alter the course of a battle. To make a 20/20 vaal gem, level several gems that way, then use the gemcutter recipe, relevel them, and when the gem is lv20/20, you vaal it. Vaal Skill Gems can now only be obtained from specific methods such as Corrupting Gems, Vaal Side Areas, and Divination Cards.
The Vaal Arc is a vaal spell that launches a chaining lightning arc at the target that lasts until no valid target remains or all chains are used up. When using a Vaal gem, the player gains the use of both the base skill gem and the empowered Vaal ability. For example, if Reave was your main ability, you could use the Vaal Reave gem instead, still being able to use the Vaal Reave gem.
A corrupted gem is a much more powerful version of a regular gem, but can only be activated once it is filled up with souls. Vaal skills do not trigger, so it won’t trigger. However, if the base skill can validly trigger then it will.
There are several active skill gems that grant vaal skills, such as Vaal Detonate Dead, which has a Spell, AoE, and Fire Level of (1-20).

How do you use the Vaal Orb in Poe?
Vaal Orbs are a form of currency used in Path of Exile to corrupt items, causing uncertainty and potentially high profits. They can alter an item’s properties, with a 25-percent chance of doing nothing or adding white sockets. Once corrupted, an item becomes unchangeable, making it difficult to change. Vaal skills can be obtained by socketing a regular gem with its vaal one, allowing access to both versions.
Soul collection is also possible with vaal gems, which typically pack more punch. Vaal Orb recipes can change items into unique items, but once corrupted, an item cannot be modified. Some unique jewels, like Self-Flagellation, can only be obtained with Vaal orbs, so be cautious.
How do vaal auras work?
Vaal aura skill gems cast a temporary aura that increases movement speed, attack speed, and cast speed for the player and allies. It reduces fire damage, provides ignite immunity, and ignores fire resistance in nearby enemies. Auras are a type of buff that applies effects to nearby allies and enemies within the aura’s area of effect. They inherit all characteristics from buffs and can be temporary, permanent, positive, or negative. Auras update their affected targets every 250ms.
All allies within a player’s aura skill area receive an aura’s buff. Both the player and allies benefit from increased effects of non-curse auras from skills, but only the player benefits from auras from skills. Aura effects from items or passive skills are not affected by these stats. Skill tooltips only show base aura stats and do not reflect increases to aura effect.
How do you use the Vaal skill?
To use a Vaal skill, its gem must be charged by collecting souls. Souls can be obtained by killing enemies, damaging Rare or Unique enemies, or by gaining 1 soul per kill. Each soul gained charges a random Vaal skill equipped on the character, and they cannot be stored in the character’s secondary weapon set. Souls are tracked per skill, not per gem, and cannot be transferred between zones. Each instance maintains its own soul counter for each gem, and once a Vaal skill collects enough souls, it is charged with one use.
Some Vaal skill gems can store enough souls for multiple uses. Once a gem’s maximum soul capacity is reached, it can’t collect additional souls until they are spent by using the skill. Once used, the Vaal skill is unable to gain souls for a few seconds, and the duration of soul gain prevention time varies between skills. The soul gain prevention is global, meaning you cannot gain souls for any Vaal skill at all.

How to turn a gem into a vaal gem?
Vaal skill gems can be created by using a Vaal Orb or Lapidary Lens on a normal skill gem or by obtaining them from gem rewards. These gems grant both the base and Vaal versions of the skill, and any supported skills will apply to both. To use a Vaal skill, its gem must be charged by collecting souls, which can be obtained by killing enemies or damaging Rare or Unique enemies. Each soul gained charges a random Vaal skill equipped on the character, and souls are tracked per skill, not per gem.
Collected souls cannot be transferred between zone instances, as each instance maintains its own soul counter for each gem. Entering a new instance starts a new counter for each gem, while returning to a previously visited instance restores each counter to its previous value.
How do you use auras?
Auras are effects that can be purchased as part of the Members Loyalty Programme and can be purely cosmetic, offer a combat bonus, or activate a special effect. They can be activated using the “Activate” option in the Aura Management interface, and can be found at Xuan, Dilwyn, or Solomon’s General Store. Berserker, Reckless, and Maniacal auras offer temporary effects, while deactivating them will stop the effect and reduce the remaining time to zero. All aura effects persist after a player dies, and active auras can only be paused by logging out, except for Greenfingers, Dwarven Instinct, and some cosmetic auras that may not be paused.

Thanks for the nice tips! Some additions that wasnt mention in the article but matter and ppl maybe unaware of it: Quality and enchants. You cant use Blacksmith’s Whetstone and Armourer’s Scrap afterwards, not like coloring and socketing with bench for extra vaal orbs, cuz no such recipes in bench for quality. In case some lowlvl items not really matter cuz the additional +% pretty low, like corrupting Facebrakers for nice curse on hits, but you dont care the extra +6 evasion. But high lvl items with 600-800+ armor/evasion or 200+ energy shield the +20% definietly needed. Not to mention phys weaps where base dmg matter much! Havnt tried to enchant corrupted items with the new lab rework, but before you couldnt, I think its still not possible to enchant corrupt items. And pretty sure after harvest nerf/rework the body/weap enchants still wont go on a corrupted item. And these enchants interact with quality! 🙂 Anyway thanks for the nice article!
hey I’m kind of new and I coruppted a body armour using a vaal orb just to see what it does, and it got a implicit. To be exact: “48% increased damage” is what it got. Not 48% increased spell damage or 48% increased damage taken or something like that it just states: “48% increased damage” can someone explain?
