In Magic: The Gathering (MTG), a spell is any type of card cast by a player. It is usually cast from the hand, but in special cases can be cast from other areas of the deck. A spell is a card that is on the stack, and it is played by either spending the mana required for it or using a spell/effect. Priority represents the opportunities you have to cast a spell for various purposes, such as friendship, employment, and wealth.
To cast a spell, take it from where it is (usually the hand), put it on the stack, and pay its costs. Priority represents the opportunities you have to cast a spell for various purposes, such as friendship, employment, and wealth. A spell is cast after its costs are paid, before anyone has a chance to respond to it, and before it resolves.
In MTG, a spell is a card that is on the stack. Cards in your hands are not spells, and permanents on the battlefield don’t count either. When you cast a spell, you take it from where it is (usually the hand), put it on the stack, and pay its costs, so that it will eventually resolve and have its effect.
In Magic: The Gathering, you can optimize your timing and sequencing of spells by exploiting priority and fleshing out your knowledge of Magic’s turn structure. You can learn when to cast combat tricks, removal, card drawing, and other spells for maximum effect and minimum risk.
In summary, casting a spell involves taking a card from the hand, placing it on the stack, and paying its costs to resolve and have its effect. Priority represents the opportunities you have to cast a spell for various purposes, such as friendship, employment, and wealth.

if a spell let me cast a card without paying mana cost, but that card is Ancestral Vision or Mox Tantalite(both cards don’t have mana cost but have suspend cost) will they resolve immediately? for Ancestral Vision i immediately draw 3 cards and Mox Tantalite come into play i can immediately tap to produce mana?
just a question, if you want to make a deck can you use card from any set? for example cards from magic 2010 and cards from magic origins. i’ve never played this game but looks like a lot of fun. I wass just wondering if i would buy card if i could buy some from older sets or do i just get the newest ones?
(So me and my buddy are new to Magic) While we played he declared his attackers during his combat phase, then I casted an instant that said something along the lines of “Deal 5 damage to attacking or blocking creatures.” I targeted one of his attackers and destroyed it but then he said the damage dealt by said attacker would still go through to me or my blockers. Is that true?
Very nicely explained 🙂 I recently started magic, but its kind of hard figuring out all the little detailes at once.. I also read/hear lots of stuff that just seems to be untrue in the end. Instants confuse me the most, especially when they stack.. If my opponent decides not to counter one, it resolves instantly, beginning with the top one right? I also read that you have to declare ‘regenerate a creature’ before combat phase and then it has a shield for ‘one extra life’, although f.eks. ‘Golgari charm’ is an instant. And creature abilities are instants too right?
Can you cast sorceries in combat phases or is that just during the main phases? My opponent declared an attacker, his commander (edh format btw) has emminence which is to add +3/+3 to his 2/3, so it becomes a 5/6, but adding +3/+3 is only beginning of combat step. Before I declared blockers and combat ever taking place, he casted a sorcery to search for lands based on biggest power for his creatures which is now 5. Is this valid? I initially thought sorceries are only for main phases (which you explained), and his +3/+3 is beginning of combat only.
