NBA legend Magic Johnson announced his HIV diagnosis in 1991, which was considered an imminent death sentence. The 32-year-old NBA player had no idea how he would retire from the Lakers after the news reached him. In a press conference convened by Johnson and the Los Angeles Lakers, AIDS activist Elizabeth Glaser convinced him to go public with his diagnosis. Glaser contracted HIV during a blood transfusion while she was pregnant.
In 1991, Johnson announced his HIV diagnosis, which shocked the basketball community and the world. With the help of modern medicine, his wife’s support, and many doctor visits, Johnson was able to break the devastating news to his wife and change the world. The average period between infection with the human immunodeficiency virus and diagnosis of AIDS is now ten years, according to experts.

Wherever and whoever he gets his treatments from, it’s safe to say that there is one sure way that Earvin and other HIV positive people successfully deal with this virus that many underestimate. And that is by the reduction of stress. It’s impossible to be absolutely stress free in this world we live in, but yet too much stress has been shown to be a major enemy of the immune system. Extreme levels of stress produce excess levels of the adrenal hormone cortisol, which in high levels causes suppression of the immune system by inhibition of CD4 cell productivity, which is vital for a strong immune system and fighting that AIDS virus. HIV positive persons do well to eliminate anything in their lives that cause extreme stress, and that goes for healthy people too.
