How Do Gunas Connect To Astrology?

In astrology, the concept of gunas (Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas) is often associated with the three modes/modalities of the signs (rashis). These modes represent the four elements of fire, earth, air, and water expressed through twelve individual zodiac signs. The three modes of astrology are Cardinal (Chara), which is dynamic, action-oriented, initiating, and Conscious Mind (Rajas Guna) ~ Aries-Cancer-Libra-Capricorn. Rajas can be symbolized by an erupting sphere.

The three gunas are the most subtle qualities of nature that underlie matter, life, and mind. They are the energies through which not only the surface mind but our deeper consciousness functions. Learning the inherent qualities (Gunas) and characteristics (Lakshana) of each Vata, Pitta, and Kapha provides a good framework to grasp an understanding of the nature of these doshas, or bio-energies.

In Vedic astrology, the three gunas are essential concepts used to understand an individual’s personality, behavior, and life path. Gunas are marks obtained out of 36marks, and they play a role in determining a person’s nature and character. Rajas is connected to Vata and movement, indicating a constant desire for change. Sattva is connected to the planets in the houses, indicating a person’s character.

The three gunas and doshas are Shamkhya concepts embedded in the early astrology texts of Parasara (Brihat Parasara Hora Shastra) and the Yavana of Spujidhava. By comparing the horoscopes of the bride and groom to ascertain their compatibility, the three gunas and doshas provide a comprehensive understanding of the nature of various elements and their relationship to each other.

What is gunas according to Gita?

The material nature consists of three gunas: sattva (goodness), rajas (passion), and tamas (ignorance). The body, mind, and intellect also possess these gunas, which form the basis of one’s character. Goodness-oriented individuals exhibit virtues like peace, morality, and well-being, while passion-driven individuals pursue worldly enhancement. Ignorance-oriented individuals are characterized by laziness, excessive sleep, delusion, and intoxication.

A spiritual seeker must deal with these powerful forces of material nature to attain illumination. Shree Krishna reveals a simple solution to break free from these gunas by attaching one’s mind to God. This leads to a rise from the material to the divine level.

Shree Krishna explains that liberated souls remain equipped and unaffected by the gunas in the material world. They understand that everything is a manifestation of God’s energy and is under His control. They remain unaffected by worldly situations and remain situated in the self.

In conclusion, Shree Krishna emphasizes that devotion can help overcome the influence of the gunas or the three modes of material nature.

What are the planetary gunas?

The three gunas in Vedic astrology are sattva, rajas, and tamas, which represent various qualities or energies present in all aspects of life. Sattva, which represents purity, harmony, and balance, is associated with individuals who are peaceful, wise, and spiritual. They have a deep connection to their inner self and strive to live in harmony with the world around them. Planets associated with sattva guna include Jupiter, the Moon, and Venus, which are considered beneficial as they can bring auspicious results and blessings to the individual. These concepts are essential in understanding an individual’s personality, behavior, and life path.

These guṇas are translated as “quality, peculiarity, attribute, property” and are present in all things and beings in the world.

Marriage approval depends on the compatibility of the bride and groom’s horoscopes, which are influenced by various factors such as mental compatibility, Mangalik dosh, longevity, opposing tendencies, common attitude, children, overall health, and sexual compatibility. A good marriage requires 18 to 25 Gunas matches, while a best match occurs when 26 to 32 Gunas match. In rare cases, more than 32 Gunas may occur, ensuring the highest degree of compatibility between the couple.

Nadi refers to health and reproduction, while Bhakoot matches the 12 zodiac signs. Gana matches the propensities of individuals, classifying them as endowed with qualities of gods, humans, and demons. What is the Triguna theory of Bhagavad Gita?

In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna teaches Arjuna about three qualities: sattva, rajas, and tamas. If sattva is the dominant quality, rajas and tamas are suppressed. If rajas dominates, sattva and tamas remain subdued. All three qualities are present in prakrti, which experiences sorrow and joy. The dominant quality depends on a person’s karma and food consumption. Valayapet Ramachariar explained that observing a person’s behavior can help determine the guna, which is the most prominent quality.

A person with pure, unconfused knowledge can have sattva predominating. A person with rajas dominates may exhibit characteristics such as unwillingness to spend money, restlessness, and a desire for sense objects. On the other hand, a person with tamas lacks knowledge, excessive sleep, and concentration. They cannot distinguish between good and bad, right and wrong. The next birth experience is determined by the quality foremost in a person at the time of death.

How do I know which guna I have?

A sensation of heaviness following a meal is indicative of an increase in tamas guna, whereas restlessness and a lack of energy are indicative of rajas guna. A clear mind and positive energy are indicative of a high degree of sattva guna. These indications suggest a state of equilibrium.

Did Ram and Sita Kundali match?

Vedic astrology suggests that a match between a bride and groom with all 36 Gunas is considered auspicious. However, some believe that if all 36 Gunas match, the marriage may not be successful due to hardships and separation. The 36 Gunas in a Kundali are:

  1. Varan: Checks the work-life or spiritual compatibility of the prospective bride and groom, determining their ego.
  2. Vasya: Checks who will be the dominant one between the husband and the wife.
  3. Tara or Nakshatra: Determines the destiny or luck of the couple.
  4. Yoni: Determines the sexual compatibility of the couple.
  5. Grah Maitri: Checks the general compatibility between the couple.
  6. Gana: Checks the characteristics of the prospective bride and groom.
  7. Bhakoot: Determines the parameters of love and intimacy between the couple.
  8. Nadi: Determines the health and children or progeny of the bride and groom for their happy marriage.

Vijay Deverakonda has criticized marriage rumors with Rashmika Mandanna, calling them “fake”.

What are the Trigunas in Astrology?

The study explores the concept of Triguna in Indian psychology, which consists of three gunas: Sattva (Purity knowledge, anger, action), and Tamas (laziness, apathy). The emotions we experience are closely related to the dominant guna in us. State anger, a subjective emotion accompanied by muscle tension and stimulation of the autonomous nervous system, can vary in intensity. Trait anger, perceived as displeasing and frustrating, is often associated with frequent state anger.

The research aimed to examine the relationship between Sattva, Rajas, Tamas, and State and Trait anger, as well as the gender difference in these factors. A sample size of 100 was taken using incidental sampling techniques. The results showed a positive relationship between Triguna and Anger, with Sattva guna and State and Trait anger, Rajas guna and State and Trait anger, and Tamas guna and State and Trait anger. However, there was no significant difference between boys and girls on the basis of guna and anger. The study is an open access research distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution License.

  • manpreet, of course you are not able to understand how to apply this principle in every possible iteration.. It is a very deep principle. Do you really think it is possibble after a 10 minute article? LOL – Your question would require about 500-100 words to answer .. so again, as I said – you need to STUDY and LEARN principles .. not just believe that hearing me explain THAT principle to you somehow means you understand how to apply it.

  • Thanks Arti, no, you cannot be too simplistic about any one thing .. like exaltation. In fact, often it is disruptive – but the disruption leads to greater awareness. Hint: Vague language like “balances as well as supports the principle”, it very hard to quantify .. Notice my first response was more specific about actions. (Desires connected highest good),… Skills connected to serious issues).

  • Great question Diego. Exaltation points shows the highest expression of the planet .. in this case desires (Venus) must be connected to the highest, metaphysical good (Pisces). Details and skills (Mercury) must be connected to facing the serious issues in life (Virgo), not just used for our amusement and play (Mercury is rajasic).. does that make sense?

  • Good article Sam..Hope you make more such similar articles..I had a question though.Do these planets naturally bring in the energy of their Guna’s in their respective mahadasha’s eg In Venus MD,will the native experience Rajasic type qualities in his/her life ? Or put it the other way around- Should the individual changes his lifestyle to a more “rajasic” one in order to enjoy and reap the benefits of venus dasha (so on and so forth for other planets as well )

  • But i have a question, how we know what is the most strong planet or most strong planets in order to take advantage of his gunas ? I mean, for example if my Venus planet is exalted (Pisces) will i need to concern myself on Rajas guna (Venus) ? such as sharing my music with people, jam with people have a band instead of solo projects, just share my fantasies with my girlfriend etc ?

  • wow…you just unraveled years of therapy, seed of psychological problems people spend thousands of dollar to learn about and hundreds of hours…..and it is right there…easy explained in 10 mins…so easy to understand. Would love how you apply astrology for therapy for adults and children. Bravo. Beautiful.

  • I have a question .Correct me if I am wrong but does this mean that which ever bhava, signs these planets are placed in we must act accordingly?? For instance if Saturn is in the 10th Bhava and in Capricorn does this mean the tamasic nature unfolds there and we let it unfurl ?? Or if Mercury,Venus and Sun are conjunct in the third bhava in Gemini does it mean the sattvic nature of sun if practiced will make relationships with people much better ? (These are for an aries ascendent)
