Saving throws are a crucial aspect of spellcasting, used to calculate the save difficulty of spells cast by a character. They are not set by the DM and are calculated by rolling a d20 and adding your ability modifier and proficiency bonus (if applicable). The spellcaster sets the DC for the saving throw, and if the total of your roll is equal to or higher, the spellcaster can work out their own spell.
Spells and traps can target your Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma saves. The DC for that saving throw is the spellcaster’s spell save DC. For character-specific DC’s, they would likely be talking about spells. A spell-caster can work out their own spell.
A saving throw represents an attempt to resist a spell, trap, poison, disease, or similar threat. The spell specifies the ability that the target uses for the save and what happens on a success or failure. The DC to resist one of your spells equals 8 + your spellcasting ability modifier + your proficiency bonus + any special modifiers. It is always 8 + proficiency bonus + spellcasting ability modifier.
All saving throws are made by rolling d20 + the appropriate ability modifier, versus a DC. If the target has proficiency in the appropriate save, they should be able to tell you. Saving throws are based off of each of the six Ability modifiers.
