Anti Magic, a powerful magic attribute, is used by Asta to nullify incoming spells and penetrate magical barriers. It can also deactivate magic. The magic system in Black Clover is straightforward, with various types and attributes such as Anti Magic, Barrier Magic, and Communication Magic.
Anti Magic allows users to create and manipulate keys at will, but specific spells are required to use it fully. The 25 strongest magic attributes in Black Clover include Cotton Magic, Time Magic, and Kotodama Magic. The power system of Black Clover consists of three main parts: mana, attribute, and spells. Mana is an important aspect of every mage, as it is their source of magic power, which is used to cast magic spells.
The power system of Black Clover includes Steel Magic, Lightning Magic, and Wing Magic. Steel Magic creates a projectile, Lightning Magic charges it with an energetic payload, and Wing Magic propels it in the world. Magic is the refinement and application of magic power to perform a specific function or spell.
In this world, magic is the ability of a user to manipulate themselves or some facet of the world around them using supernatural powers. Magi can develop the ability to sense Ki, which allows individuals to sense attacks by people and projectile objects. The ability to sense Ki is essential for achieving success in the world of Black Clover.

Who has the rarest grimoire in Black Clover?
In Black Clover, grimoires are spellbooks with unique properties and power levels based on their user. The most common type is the 3-leaf grimoire, but rare 5-leaf grimoires are introduced, which don’t disappear when the user dies. Asta’s 5-leaf grimoire, acquired early in the story, has a mysterious origin and power. The full extent of its power remains unknown, but it has a sordid history that has left fans wondering why it chose him. When a grimoire chooses a mage, it is usually blank or almost blank, and spells appear as the grimoire grows in knowledge and strength alongside its owner.
The connection between a grimoire and its master is so strong that no one can use a grimoire belonging to another mage. However, Asta wasn’t the first owner of this iconic five-leaf clover spellbook, suggesting there’s more to it than meets the eye.
Can Asta surpass Yuno?
Asta, a powerful Arcane mage, could defeat Yuno, a Stage 0 mage, using powerful techniques like Mana Zone and Spirit of Boreass. Despite Asta’s strength, Yuno would likely face consequences if he wins, as he would struggle to defeat him.

The more powerful a person is, the more respect, resources, and opportunities they gain. This system is a standard fare in fiction, as it is a common aspect of magic in fiction.

Why does Asta have 0 magic?
Asta, a rare Magic Knight, lacks any magic but has access to Anti Magic, which nullifies all forms. He has focused on physical improvement since childhood, making him a dangerous opponent. Asta has faced multiple high-ranking members from other Magic Knight Squads and even a Vice Captain from the Golden Dawn, the strongest squad in the Kingdom. His skill has been praised by even the current Wizard King Julius Novachrono. Asta initially has a rough style due to his unconventional sword and basic training from Fanzell Kruger.
Over time, he develops greater skills through battle experience, additional swords, and ki-sensing. Asta also has no magic power, making him undetectable to mana-sensors and immune to the life-draining substance of the underworld.
Who becomes Wizard King, Asta or Yuno?
After a lengthy and arduous conflict, Asta emerges triumphant. However, Yuno concedes defeat and assumes the role of the wizard king of the Clover kingdom, while Yuno becomes the wizard king of the Spade kingdom.
How does Asta’s magic work?
Asta is a fictional character in the manga series Black Clover, created by Yūki Tabata. As a peasant orphan left at a church, Asta aspires to become the next Wizard King. He overcomes his lack of magical power through intense physical training, enabling him to wield anti-magic swords from a five-leaf clover grimoire. Asta joins the Black Bulls squad to achieve his dream.
In the anime adaptation, Asta is voiced by Gakuto Kajiwara in Japanese and Dallas Reid in English. Initially criticized for his archetype characterization and tone, critics have received positive feedback for his determination and relationships with other characters. Asta was originally created as Asta Staria in the 2014 Jump NEXT! one-shot. His personality is inspired by Tabata’s, and his enthusiasm, strong will, and desire to never give up move people around him.
Kajiwara describes Asta as pulling people into his life with his enthusiasm, strong will, and desire to never give up. His determination and strong will bring hope and energy to readers of the manga, influencing their daily lives.
Is Asta royalty?
The series depicts the differences between Asta and Yuno, who are working towards becoming the next Wizard King. Asta, a commoner and peasant, is not royalty but will protect the Kingdom from disaster. The series highlights the differences between the two, with Asta working hard to prove himself and his reliability. Yuno, on the other hand, gains respect and authority from others more easily, despite facing classism from his peers in the Golden Dawn squad.
Yuno is consistently shown to have incredible magic abilities, such as powerful wind magic and a wind elemental spirit called Bell. He also receives a powerful Four-Leaf clover grimoire, which brings good luck, and an additional grimoire in the Spade Kingdom, which is originally his, as he uses Star Magic. This highlights the magic difference between Asta and Yuno, as they both strive to become the next Wizard King.
Can everyone in Black Clover use magic?
Mana is a vital element in magic, as it is the source of magic power and is naturally present in the environment and within everyone. People born with strong affinity for mana and exceptional magic power are considered “loved by mana”, while those without mana are rare and “hated by mana”. Excessive use of mana can cause severe exhaustion, unconsciousness, and even death.
The density of mana varies from place to place, with areas with strong mana having unusual climates like Raque, a warm beach resort, and areas with extremely high densities of mana, such as dungeons and Grand Magic Zones, having distorted and hazardous environments, making navigation difficult. Overall, mana is a crucial aspect of magic, influencing the way individuals use it and the potential consequences of overuse.
Who has the most powerful magic in Black Clover?
Asta, the number one blockhead in Black Clover, wields the powerful Anti-Magic power, given by the five-clover grimoire. Asta uses this power to stand against powerful mages within the Black Clover universe. The protagonist, Asta, aspires to become the “Wizard King” and the world revolves around magic. Royal society members have the strongest powers, and people are discriminated against based on their magic power. Commoners are looked down upon due to their negligible magic powers.
The strength of a person is not only determined by their birth power but also by the type of magic they possess. As fans continue to analyze the series’ unique power system, this list has been updated to include more information on the strongest magic types in Black Clover.
Is Asta the chosen one?
One Piece introduces elements suggesting that Luffy might have been destined for his journey, while Black Clover portrays Asta as someone who defies destiny. The series follows a pattern where the protagonist is given a seemingly weak ability or possesses a hidden power. Luffy’s initial ability was intriguing but not formidable. As the series progressed, Luffy’s hard work led to the development of new abilities.
However, the most powerful transformation was tied to destiny, as revealed when Luffy ate a devil fruit previously possessed by Joyboy, a legendary figure who passed his will down through the ages. This highlights the contrast between One Piece and Black Clover’s portrayal of characters.

The anime does a poor job of immersing us with these basic tenants. I’m 20 episodes deep and I’m confused as hell. They need to give very descriptive information of each ability, it’s limits and strengths. Also some sort of mana level scaling so we know the progression of the main cast. Other wise were stuck in a loop of expositions and events with no meaning.
I have gotta admit. didn’t understand the magic system going into this article… and I think i understand it less coming out of this article. (that is not a dig at your article or explanation, both where good.) I just simply have never been able to wrap my head around black clovers magic system. thanks fro the article though it was helpful in other ways.
I’d like to have burning chains magic. It allows me to manipulate burning chains but the heat level is only 100 degrees celcius so the burning isn’t that op Edit: and then he sees Sharingan magic 👀 Edit 2: wait a fuck if you want something faster than like… Then you must want F A S T magic!!! Aint I smart….
Asta was a terrifying existence prior to obtaining anti-magic because he defies natural order. Zaggred (the word devil) summoned that grime that absorbs both life and mana (because the two are directly connected) but the moment it touched Asta nothing happened to him. Much like how he survived 9 months in his mother’s womb, which would have been certain death for anyone else- considering the passive ability of his mother to drain life and mana.
You forgot to mention hidden magic That’s the OP magic that Zora and Magna use Hidden magic is using spells that aren’t in your grimoire. The way to do this is by the use of rune arrays and great understanding of mana. Basically when a strong mage uses the mana method, the runes they make are denser than the natural mana so the end up dissipating when used. However if the user has weak mana, the runes just stay floating around in the air. Using this technicality, Zora figured out that he can keep adding runes/commands to his magic circles into making a ridiculously complicated spell that it effects the fundamental aspects of mana. The 2 examples of these spells are: Zora counter trap- absorbs a enemy’s spell into the circle, it changes it’s attribute to match the spell fired and shoots it back twice as hard. Magmas soul death match- which creates a binding chain to the user and victim souls, which constantly equal there mana and it goes away when one is knocked out. The reason no one uses this method is because it’s derived by the mana method, which is a specialty of the heart kingdom, and they focus on increasing the magicians stage to better use mana method. So no ever thought of it, Zora just happened to self teach rune arrays and went nuts.
Here are all the errors I caught: 1. 2:58 Strong/Grand mana zones, instead of Magic Regions. 2. 4:16 Wizards, instead of mages. 3. 11:29 Wicked Heart, instead of wicked eye. 4. 13:15 Five elemental spirits, instead of four… But he corrected himself. 5. 14:17 Mimosa has no attack spells, Magic Cannon Flower… But I think he noticed. 6. 14:30 Charmy uses transformation/transmutation magic, instead of Grey. 7. 15:53 Devil hosts tap into anti-magic (this is exclusive to Asta), instead of negative magic. 8. 16:52 Smoke garden is the only weakening magic, ignoring world tree magic and food magic. But it was very entertaining because of how much I love black clover and Nick’s articles.
I don’t think running out of mana actually kills a person like chakra in Naruto, if that was the case, both Magna and Dante would’ve died since they both confirmed ran out of mana and had to bare knuckle box (showing they also still had stamina) Life force is also described as something separate from mana as Gaja, stated he would use all his life force to fuel his mana when he attacked the devil.
Can we get more Black Clover explained articles? I got into the series due to this article and a friend’s recommendation and I am HOOKED, I was thinking maybe a every element spirit explained or a kingdom explained? Do whatever you see fit ofcourse but I’d love to see something of the sort. Keep up the amazing work!!!
Yeah I love black clover too!! It’s so interesting, I’ve been following the magic system and I believe everything is correct, except that the magic stones can only be used by elves, that’s why the witch queen couldn’t use hers, and although a Diemond was sealed inside one of them, I don’t think she has attempted to release some of the magic trapped inside of the stones, aside from reviving the king But yeah I can imagine how difficult it is to not talk about the manga lmao, i’m getting introduced to the “new content” Though I am very curious and I hope it gets explained, but aside from genetics and cross species mingling, I want to say your soul can be a natural way to get other elements, I mean i’m going to have to look back on these two points (manga spoiler!!) but Yuno chat with his star magic and the wizard king’s origin both might be clues for if everyone can get more than 1 trick under there sleeve, I mean, sure you might need either a lot of mana or just prove your self in another kingdom to get their districts Grimoire 🤔
7:37 not really, the Magic stones Can store vast amounts of mana, meaning that After that, someone can use this huge amount of mana to enpower themselves. However, the stone had negative mana because Licht, that started to become a demon, stored as much negative mana as possible into it in order to weaken himself before becoming a demon
nick when you say release in the context of black clover you’re not far of because mana is like if not just energy when you release it’s moldable flexible mana and ki are pretty much the same under certain context that is plus magic is a broad genre so release makes more sense and some magic types are common
Well, Arcane Stage magic is a bit different. It’s not that it is the highest stage, but that it stands as another option for mages to fight against Devils. Things like Anti-Magic, or Sealing Magic, or Transmutation Magic. Those are magic types that are unique by themselves. And its those same properties that allow Arcane Stages to fight on the same level as Stage 0 and 1, the highest ones in terms of raw power.
Nick, Mercury magic comes from Hacier Silva’s steel type magic, which is a derivative of earth magic. There is a flashback where she is shown telling Nozel, “You are the only one of my children who has my steel attribute. Please use it to protect your siblings.” Other than that, great article as always.
this might be a hot take but if black clovers animation was maybe half as decent as demon slayers it would’ve been in the conversation for best new gen anime not saying it’s necessarily the best just saying if the animation was beter more people would get to appreciate an amazing storyline, good character progressions, some amazing fight scenes and great plot points
There are 3 different ways to reach Arcane stage, which is the level above Stage 0: become a devil host or weg, meaning you’ve encountered and websiteed negative mana before, reach the Saint Stage with your Elemental Spirit, or learn Ultimate magic. The main reason this ranks above Stage 0 has more to do with their affinity to combat high-rank devils. I really enjoyed this breakdown of the power system! I think it’s the first time I’ve ever heard it talked about so detailed!
asta n the new character at end of last season to anime watchers are able to use “dark magic” is because there devils are “weak” nd asta shares a connection with his while the lieutenant of black bulls made them submit to him and pls not i said there devils are “weaker” compared to others wen reading or watchin anything that comes out nd ur not caught up on
Fun fact yami mean darkness and yami can use dark magic Seeing pattern? Plus if you watch in detail yami is the only japenese with japenese name while others have crusidan theme wizard knight etc. So that mean the anime is not base on japenese. And yami is the only japenese in the kindom. Fact he the only one who use katana and he is the only one who wear japenese. And yami is the only one who use ki and he tought asta how to use ki because asta cant use magic and sense mana.
Interesting article but one small correction. Arcane magic is power inexplicable magic that can interferes with natural laws + possess the potential. It’s essentially magic that can manipulate intangible concepts our the foundation of reality. For example dark magic (darkness is not physical yet absorbs everything) anti-magic (erases magic) sealing magic (can unseal and seal soul, spaces, heal, can seal away power + so much more) Thread magic (can manipulate fate, overturn death and even bend gravity) time magic (again time is an intangible concept) and transmutation (the ability to transmute both physical and magical matter) Being affected by forbidden magic doesn’t make you arcane, though it can help you combat magic from the underworld. Arcane power can destroy devil hearts because they can interference with natural laws/logic. Licht and Lumiere arn’t arcane even though they were affected by forbidden magic, they were able to destroy Zagred’s body but not his heart. For example before Nero even used the magic stones her sealing magic was able to break the word-soul bindings Zagred had on Lumiere in the flashback while Lumiere’s magic couldn’t affect his magic at all. Patry was also effected by forbidden magic yet he still couldn’t do a thing to Zagred’s heart. Another is Vanessa and Grey are both arcane yet they do not use forbidden magic, so using forbidden magic or being effected by it doesn’t make you arcane. When Lolo said Nero was arcane, she stated that shas has ancient sealing magic and has used forbidden magic.
I could go into detail with how many Um Actually’s there are here, but here is the biggest four in order of which are important 1. First the tiers of Magic are this Level 5-1, Level 0, Saint Stage/Arcane Stage; Arcane and Saint stage are on the same level because they are both capable of killing devils, Asta kills devils because they are extreme manifistations of Mana, Noelle kills devils because her level of Mana when she’s united with Undyne override the amount of Mana Megicula had 2. Murcury magic is derived from Water and Steel Magic being mixed together, so it’s elemental COMPOUNDS that are the driving factor of what element you get, if your dad had Fire Magic and your mom had Water Magic, you might get either of those abilities depending on the strength of magic of either parent, the stronger force of Mana being the winner, OR a Combination of the two into either Mist Magic or Steam Magic depending on which parent’s magic was stronger Mist being Water winner and Steam being Fire. TLDR; Magic is Compounded and extremely dependent on which Parent Magic is stronger 3. The “Irregularities” you described ARE part of the NATRUAL cycle of Magic, they are NOT Irregularities but simply the PRIMAL Magics, Water, Fire, Earth, and Wind, are the most common of the Primal Magics because of the simple fact they are compoundable, Dark, Light, Time, Dream, Spatial, And all those other ones are PRIMAL magics, that cannot be compounded 4. It’s not Charmy who uses the Transformation Magic, it’s Grey, and her Magic is Transmutation Magic now cus she understands the properties of her magic a whole lot better now
The one bad thing of clovers magic system is (aside, that you are only can use, with what you are born, not, what you want to learn), that in most parts, all that matter is practicly, how much mana you have. The more you have, the stronger are your attacks. With exception of anti magic and and rune magic, is everyone in disadvangte,m when he has lower mana as the other. With enough mana, you can even cancle the element weakness. And, it isnt even mentioned, if it is possible to increase your mana pool over the time (each one with high mana is a noble, who are born with much mana). The chara became stronger with the time, by learning new ways to use the magic or learn new ability. But, it doesnt look like, that the mana increased. And there are even some skills, you can only learn with high mana.
chakra fuels ninjutsu mana fuels magic. I believe that Asta doesn’t have mana, but has magic. You know how characters run out of “energy” and can’t use their special powers anymore? Asta is in permanently in that state. Which means he essentially “can’t use magic”, but still HAS magic. And that magic is sword magic (or storing magic like his mom). This is under the assumption that storing and bringing out swords doesn’t cost any mana. But that also means that if Asta had sword magic, he can’t use sword techniques in the way Licht could, because Asta lacks the magic to use those techniques. He can only use his swords’ innate abilities.
I’m hard pressed to call Black Clover’s magic system the best when it doesn’t even properly explain its own fundamentals. You don’t even know what the contents of a grimoire look like or how someone actually goes about constructing a spell. Like how did someone like Magna come up with his flame rope and why doesn’t the fire burn? What’s even the point of an attribute like fire if it doesn’t even have a lasting burning effect? And a lot of the stuff that it is doing isn’t really all that different from the magic of other stories like Fairy Tail, or Seven Deadly Sins, or even Naruto, it just has its own mechanics and gimmicks like the others do.
