Despite the vast evidence, dust and rock samples, television footage, and hundreds of thousands of people who made it happen, polls show that around 6 of Americans distrust the official version of events. In the US, opinion polls indicate that between 5-10 of Americans distrust the official version of events. In the UK, a YouGov poll in 2012 found that 12 of Britons believed in the moon landings.
Despite the huge amount of evidence, conspiracy theories surrounding the moon landings have proved worryingly persistent in the 50 years since Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin took their first small steps on the lunar surface. Conspiracy theories that the moon landing was actually a hoax that the U.S. government had staged to win the space race with the Soviets began to gain traction in the mid-1970s.
In the summer of 2009, the United States celebrated the fortieth anniversary of the first Moon landing, Apollo 11. A survey by the TRESCA EU research project details how scientific dis- and mis-information abounds and is working on tools to help manage this digital misinformation.
The reason why so many people still think the moon landings were faked is due to Bill Kaysing’s pamphlet about “America’s $30bn swindle”. On a nationwide US survey, around 10% of respondents agreed with conspiracy claims that the Earth is flat, NASA faked the moon landings, or COVID-19.
