How To Arrange The Cards In A Tarot Reading?

To connect with your Tarot cards, follow these steps:

  1. Clean your deck with sacred smoke, crystals, moon, salt, or by shuffling.
  2. Set an intention by holding your cards in your hands and taking a few moments to breathe.
  3. Shuffle well to cleanse the energy within the deck.
  4. Do a connection spread to identify familiar friends vs. silent strangers.

A good Tarot reader should be able to recognize the cards’ messages and deliver them accordingly. To improve your Tarot readings, consider your connection to your deck.

To get clear, accurate guidance from the cards, read multiple cards together in a spread for detailed, meaningful insights. Metaphors can help make the links simpler to find.

Using an actual spread can help connect your cards into a story. Start by saying the keywords in your mind as you lay each card down, then go back to the first card and start talking.

Choose a reader you like and feel safe with. Take care of yourself first, whether you are hungry, angry, lonely, tired, ill, or physically. Be clear about the question or intention and keep the reading in context.

There are eight ways to connect with your Tarot cards:

  1. Connect to each card.
  2. Look for strong reactions.
  3. Sleep with a card.
  4. Perform a ritual.
  5. Meditate on the cards.

Tarot cards mirror each other in interesting ways, picking up narrative threads and connecting them in a way that helps you understand your Tarot readings.

How do tarot cards relate to one another?

Tarot cards are designed to tell stories, and they often mirror each other in interesting ways. The Major Arcana is an example of a card connection, where two similar scenes are depicted: Temperance and The Star. Temperance is about balance and structure, while The Star is about bringing down these structures. These similarities in the Major Arcana are stages on a journey, with Temperance focusing on balance and The Star on bringing down these structures.

The Tower, between Temperance and The Star, is a card that aims to bring down these structures, making them essentially before-and-after pictures. These connections in tarot can provide insight into the narrative threads and the meaning behind the cards.

Is it OK to pull tarot cards for yourself?

Tarot readings can be done by beginners, providing insight into current situations, honoring intuition, and forecasting potential outcomes. To begin, clean the energy of your space by burning herbs, ringing bells or chimes, taking a bath, or using crystals. A Selenite wand is a popular energy refresher that aids clarity.

Sit comfortably and close your eyes, focusing on the protective energy surrounding you. Take deep breaths, think about your question or needing guidance, and keep your mind and heart open to the answers that may come through the cards. Shuffle the deck, focusing on your desired query, and shuffle the cards in front of you. The pattern laid out is called a “spread”, and the meaning of each card in combinations builds up to the overall answer to your query.

Before beginning to shuffle, know which spread you will be working with. As answers come through, it’s important to draw additional cards for further clarity or start with a new question from a different perspective. Tarot readings can be a powerful tool for personal growth and understanding.

How many cards should be pulled in a Tarot reading?

Howe recommends two basic spreads for beginners: a three-card pull and the Celtic Cross. The former involves drawing three cards from the deck to represent the past, present, and future, while the Celtic Cross is a classic starting point with 10 cards each. However, there is no “right” spread; it’s more about the connections between the cards, as the cards around a certain card influence the meaning.

Dyan suggests focusing on the quality of each message instead of the quantity of cards pulled, as the connections between cards are influenced by each other and sometimes amplified by each other. The Celtic Cross spread is a classic starting point, but there is no one “right” spread.

  • There isn’t a wrong way to read the cards. Your intuition and your perspective in life in general will give you the meaning that best suits the situation you need at a given time. There are many many different way to interpret the cards above. what resonates with the the one who is being read is the proper way to read cards. This is a great article! Thanks for the great tips!!

  • In an intuitive reading, I would see a difference between the first two cards- in the first card the figure is walking away. It suggests that they are choosing and able to do so (despite the fact that walking is not easy for them – they hold a walking stick). It’s not necessarily a refusal to deal something. If you choose to walk away, you feel in the moment as if you are in control and that turning your back on the options and opportunities available is the right choice . The center card suggests that perhaps that choice did not work out so well for them, or that it caused a degree of strife. They appear weak and stressed under the weight of the swords above them. A bed is where we spend time if we are sick or depressed, and this figure appears less able to leave. The third card reveals that perhaps it was necessary to go through that experience, as the they have come out stronger. She looks pensive and thoughtful – life’s experiences have led to greater knowledge, maturity, confidence and personal growth. It has not been forgotten – she has learned from it.

  • The eight of cups are emotional attachments from the past and which no longer serve them. The decision to leave such attachments behind may be a worry at first, with the 9 swords its a completion of a particular stage in your emotional growth and the Queen of cups is basically indicating the decision was a positive outcome and progress,

  • I saw a significant emotional loss in the past that is causing emotional distress in the present but that the future sees you mastering your emotions and being in a much better place! We will of course interpret differently but your explanation of connecting the cards was very useful and it will definitely help me in the future. Thank you 🙏❤️

  • Someone made a hard decision based on intuition not knowing what would unfold ahead. Current, their is worry about decision made, hence sleepless nights and anxiety- but the card assures that the negative phase is almost complete. It is really not a big deal as what the person is making it out to be (self destructive thinking). Last card assures that the person will find balance and use experience to have a strong foundation going forward.

  • I took this as recently walking away from something / someone that no longer served you + the 9 of swords is needing to deal with the emotions, perhaps grief and potential regret of that decision. The Queen is moving into a stage of acceptance and regaining emotional stability once you’ve dealt with the feelings you need to that come with walking away / choosing a different path

  • Sometimes, depending on the reading, I read the 9 of Swords as “waking up from a nightmare”. So, not necessarily a “negative” card, but more of a “emerging from a bad situation”, but dealing with the fallout (sometimes I see it almost like “having a hangover”… waking from a bad dream and it kind of stays with you throughout the day). Then with the Queen of Cups, rising above the emotional turmoil of the situation.

  • New to this. First card I felt was walking away from addictions or something no longer serving them. The 2nd card reminded me of depression and late night tossing and turning. I felt it was because of the past hurt. The queen of cups made me think of a mother who is nurturing and very sensitive to the needs of others. Maybe they are going to get counseling and everything falls in place.

  • I agree with Niamh, your first comment, that it represents waking from a nightmare, waking from a bad situation which would make more sense from the first card that shows someone walking away from a bad situation. And the second card would be waking up from a bad situation. And the Queen of cups would represent her position afterward.

  • i interpret this as someone leaving a relationship yet it causes a lot of pain for them because they miss their old partner. they eventually step into their power and realize to be comfortable with their emotions and that its okay to feel heartbroken. they still keep their old partner in mind, but it doesn’t affect them as much.

  • Thanks for the great article:) I have been collecting a few tarot decks over the years, but have never really been serious about learning much about them until recently. I have been finding it hard to connect each card in a reading, and your explanation and example has really made it easier for me to conceptualize how the different cards can interact and speak to each other. Thanks again 🙂

  • For me, anxiety is always a fear of the future. The swords In the 9 of swords points towards the future (east) (queen of cups) yet the figure will not uncover their eyes to see. If they did, they could see the advice the Queen of Cups has to offer, as she sits calmy in the present moment appreciating her cup.

  • The first two wouldn’t talk. I’m not into their dialoging when they just wouldn’t. The Queen’s love and wisdom, however, would be felt by the other two if they were even slightly open to help. So the point is that the first two, if they are seeking release, seeking another way, they would receive it. Also, please do more of these vids. They help tons, reading the comments helps tons too

  • I read the eight of cups as someone who’s walking away from a thing place or situation that has served its purpose in your life I see it as moving on from things that no longer serve you or maybe walking towards something better in a positive aspect because as you see the cups are empty so to me that is revealing that they you have took what you needed from them and they have served their purpose the nine of swords I read as maybe someone being very stressed and having anxiety and being kept up by their thoughts or feelings about a situation maybe fears I don’t see it personally as refusing to see more like seeing but being stressed by what they see or feel

  • That’s really cool! Thanks for the explanation. My reading for these cards goes like this: There was a moment of scarcity or a feeling of lack despite the fact that you are actually surrounded with abundance. You dont see it nor realize it. Because of this, you feel alone and stuck and you think there’s no way out. However, the 10 of swords is reminding you that you are not alone and if you look inwards, you will find that you actually have it in you to rise through your current situations. Listen to your inner self and appreciate all the blessings around you, big or small. The queen of cups is encouraging you to reflect and she’s telling you that you will be guided throughout your emotional transitions. She’s reminding you to be gentle to yourself and to try and remember what truly brings you happiness.

  • Hello! I’m learning how to read tarot cards but im having trouble making connections between cards. For example I asked a question about someone’s feelings and I got the tower and the hierophant but i didn’t understand so i asked for a clarifier and got the justice. Then I asked if they would have a relationship and I got temperance. I think is a positive reading. Can you confirm that? Thank you!!

  • Hmm Im not sure if you have actually looked up the meanings of these cards, but the 8 of cups meaning is that the man is choosing to walk away from something….he is leaving behind the full cups behind him and crossing the river to the other side, the 9 of swords can indicate emotional turmoil and unrest….they are two very different cards, def not similar. (holy, I just noticed this vid is 10 years old so Im sure you have learned even more since then, sorry I had no idea it was that old lol).

  • I will be 65 on July 10th. I have had many ladies in my life that were self-described as “White Witches”. When I was 20 years old, I was taught to read The Tarot by a couple of them. Please give me your thoughts on this; ” The Fool on the Hill see’s the Sun going down, and the Eyes in his Head see the World going round “. I see the lay-out as ; first card, The Fool, second card, The Sun ( inverted) & third card, The World . I

  • I had a love spread for a friend where one card was about conflict and the next was about blissful love, only for the next to be about regret and the next about soulmates and vice versa. I was so confused about the mixed messages. Thank you for the article, I will try to connect the cards to one another. My main feeling was that the happiness is only superficial while deep down inside the couple (or at least one partner) is unhappy.

  • I have a question please. When I was viewing the spread I gotten something a little different, as you explained as if the Queen of Cups was a outside person in the future helping or advising. I was thinking of it as themselves facing the situation in order to find a solution and was able move on to a more positive outcome and stage of their life. Why did you decide it was an outside influence?

  • This spread looks like: in the past something made this person turn away from their feelings and “close their heart”, and then in the present, because feeling were neglected – mind took over and started controlling them, and so because mind is only for “thinking and analyzing”, it is now unable to “do the heart’s job” 😂, so that is the root cause of anxiety that is shown in the second card. But in the future “the balance is restored” by the queen of cups because that person gave “the emotional control” back to the heart. And the deference between 1 and the 3 cards is that person has learned a lesson (card 2) to progress in card 3. Sorry for the mess 😂 just my guesses.

  • I think this person has decided to walk away from past situations which no longer serve them. They are passionate about needing to leave these issues in the last. The way the cups are divided into 5, 2, and 1, I interpreted as this person experienced a loss (5 of cups). Frim the 2 cups, it was probably in love, and from the single cup, they decided to take the Divine’s offer of a new start. The 9 of words are doubts, worry, regret, about whether walking away was the right decision, but these are just thoughts. They are not necessarily true. In this present situation they can find comfort (represented by the comfortable bed and comforter, and having shelter). The 9 swords represent completion, so the worst is already over. The Queen of Cups represents that like the Queen, you will regain your emotional balance, prosperity, and strength. You will once again feel sure, loving, open, and contentment. 😋🙏🏽

  • I really like the idea of having the cards dialogue with one another. In the case of the 9 of Swords, I imagine a kind of anxious, fevered monologue — fears and concerns rolling off the tongue with little space to hear what someone else may be trying to tell them. The Queen of Cups listens to this diatribe patiently, knowingly, aware that the best tactic is to simply be present. Almost like letting a toddler wear him or herself down in a tantrum.

  • I clicked on this because I know nothing about tarot reading but did the simplest card pull of past, present, and future. For present I got the 9 or swords and the picture is exactly the same so we must have the same deck of cards. For past I drew the Ace of Swords and Future drew The Chariot. The present card definitely sounds like me. Anyone want to take a crack at interpreting my past and future cards?

  • I am a beginner, but for me in this reading I think of a relationship. I feel masculine energy from the 8 of cups.. we are almost to the end but walked away unexpectedly due to financial burdens.. the female energy is now left alone to deal with all the burdens herself, but she decides to overcome and prosper becoming the queen bad bitch she always was meant to be., without that loser to hold her down. She stands tall on her throne!

  • I enjoyed your teaching. We study what the cards mean, which is important, however, it really is our own intuition and messages received from Spirit during a reading. The cards are a tool and a great tool at that. So with that being said..I would have to disagree with jackson voase, she was giving a general meaning.

  • the fact that 3 random cards with no real energy behind (no querent) can generate so many meanings like people in the comment are able to bring out make me question whether tarot is valid or readers just make things up. as long as the cards connect and make sense you’re good to go? how do you know what you are saying is correct if even the querent can not tell themselves?

  • So the meaning of a card is according to what’s is drawn on them? Every brand have different illustrations, I’ve seen some with just cats, or other unrelated illustrations. Wouldn’t it be better to learn cards by their core meaning instead of giving them a meaning according to how the illustrator decided to represent them? I’m trying to learn that’s why I’m asking.

  • This is wild, so, I did a spread last night to see where I am locked up in my life and how to break free and the first card I pulled was the Queen of Cups. (In the booklet I like to reference the Queen of Cups talks about getting out of your head and into your heart.) This morning I decided to look up a article on how to interpret the cards in comparison to each other because I’d like to improve on that. Well, this article came up. What’s amazing is this PPF spread from 10 years ago accurately describes my past, and lines up perfectly with the spread I did last night!

  • Tarot cards are more accurate if read from right to left instead of left to right!! Here we have a lady or woman who is suffering a lot of sleepless nights which is effecting her sleep pattern these sleepless nights are concerning an issue that she is finding hard to turn her back on, going back to the 9 swords this is telling me that she is mentally tortured with the situation she has to face or has had to face….

  • Kate, firstly what a soothing voice, secondly I believe colours are vital, also the symbolism within would make the reading more personal, I feel that past position shows walking away from a difficult situation or issue, a positive one at that cups = emotion, rebirth etc …. almost taking the longer or hard road, present position still very defensive And hard to let go of your life decision, the flowers represent red – passion and love and new hope – the future positions shows that you made the right choice for you, more prosperous, the water is still but still you have stability, colour again is vital – also symbology is pretty vast with this card . IMO x blessings

  • Just some constructive criticism. Firstly, It would be better if you studied the meaning of all the cards and understood what they actually represent, instead of guessing. Not all the meanings of the cards are obvious when you look at them, sometimes they betray. Secondly, You did not pin point anything specific in terms of a story or a problem and you certainly didnt offered any resolution.
