How To Create A Foam Mascot Head?

This week, a DIY mascot head was created using EVA foam, felt, 3 wigs, and glue. The guide provides a step-by-step procedure for building a lightweight foam and fur school mascot head. The template is a PDF file that can be printed out on paper, cut out, and used to assemble the wearable mascot head using EVA foam sheets.

To make a fur suit head, you will need 1-inch thick foam, glue, plastic wrap, duct tape, and fur. Wrap the foam around and paint the eyes with white craft foam balls. For the pupil, use a blob of black polymer clay to cover the head of a screw. Make a hole in the bottom of a can.

The first step in creating an affordable mascot head design is creating a general form out of sturdy foam material. A mascot builder will use special adhesive to put this form in place. Gather materials, cut rough shapes, cut out room for the head, assemble the core, and finalize the assembly.

In this project, four people made the mascot head by cutting and stacking squares of upholstery foam, lightly sketching out the desired width and height, and using leftovers from the 1″ foam for the head base. Cut out four pieces of foam with at least 1 inch extra in each dimension to glue together.

In summary, this DIY mascot head project is a simple and affordable way to create a unique and affordable mascot head.

  • I came looking for a quick primer on EVA foam to see what all the fuss is about in case I wanted to invest in a new costume technique for my favorite holiday. Just wanted to say that this article is amazing! A blitz of great practical tips, clear instructions, safety advice, and creative ideas in an efficient package. Well done!

  • I was looking for answers on my very complex question, “what thickness should I buy”, and I learned so much that I hadn’t even thought about. I guess that all I can say is, thank you so much for making this. I honestly had no idea the different colours were different densities. The more you know, I guess

  • This is so helpful! Thank you! My son wants to be Odysseus and wants me to be Athena for Halloween this year. He’s going to be so excited to have a cooler costume than the basic costume/armor I’ve been finding ready-made online. I love what I’ve been finding on Etsy, but can’t afford it right now, so I’ll give it a try!

  • What’s the best kind of paint for painting foam? With and without primer? (I’ll be making feathers for wings so I’m not sure if I want to prime) I usually stay away from painting things because I don’t like the finish of acrylic paint, but my wings will be white so I will need to. Would chalk paint work and give a nice finish? Thanks so much in advance!

  • I’m sure this article has helped a ton of people, but to me personally I felt like, “Okay, so that’s the kind of foam I need. Okay, and I’ll get some glue. And a dremel. And paint. And primer for the paint. And maybe a heat gun. And probably some putty. And…” I didn’t realize cosplaying was such an expensive hobby.
