A waxing moon is illuminated on the right side, while a waning moon is illuminated on the left side. The moon signifies our mind and provides insights through divine light from the Sun. The longitude difference between the Sun and Moon gives a certain amount of light to our inner being. There are eight moon phases in total, with the waxing and wanes occurring every 28-29 days.
The two most fundamental energies in our birth chart are the Sun and the Moon. The Sun is the most yang, projective, giving us a sense of individual self and purpose, while the Moon is the dreamer. Those born during the Waxing Crescent phase are dreamers at heart, driven by a waxing and waning moon.
The waxing and waning phases of the moon hold significant meaning in astrology. The waxing moon increases in light from the New Moon to the Full Moon phase, or in its first and second quarters, while the waning moon decreases from full moon to the dark of the moon in its third and fourth quarters.
The Tithi or the Moon Phase is calculated based on the longitudinal difference between the Moon and the Sun. To know when the moon is in its waning period, locate its shadow.
To find your partner’s or crush’s/enemy’s Moon sign, simply put your birth date, time, and location into the birth chart calculator. A waxing moon at birth suggests a life marked by growth, learning, and accumulation, mirroring the increasing light.

I had this in a science test when I was a kid and couldn’t remember it. The teacher got us chanting “waxing right, waning left, waxing right, waning left” whilst stamping our feet and bashing our fists on the table. I’m sure it annoyed the teacher next door but we all seemed to remember it haha 35 years later
Harmen Westerhof commented with another great trick for knowing whether the moon is waxing or waning: ‘”p” for “premier” (French for “first”, i.e., first quarter), and “d” for “dernier” (French for “last”, i.e., last quarter). Fit the lit part of the moon in the closed part of the letter, so that the dark part of the moon is always behind the straight line of the letter.’ This lines up with my handed approach because you can imagine your right hand holding the curve of the lit side of the moon which matches the curve of the letter ‘p’ when it is ‘p’ for “first” or waxing, and then you can imagine your left hand holding the curve of the lit side of the moon which matches the letter ‘d’ when it is ‘d’ for “last” when it is waning. Premier and dernier are a bit classier than “bright/bereft” rhyming with right/left! 😂 Thanks, Harmen! And in the next month or so I’ll be updating my Etsy shop with the 2022 circle calendar!
