To identify Magic cards, look for the set symbol in the middle-right area of the card and use the table to find the corresponding edition name. Most Yu-Gi-Oh! cards have a card number that identifies its set, region, and place in the set. The printing pattern varies between regular cards with a hexagon pattern and Alternate 4th Edition cards with an indiscernible pattern.
To determine the edition a card is from, check the symbol on the right side of the bar between the art and text box. In Magic the Gathering, cards can be broadly grouped into three separate sections: Cards with Set Markers, which have a symbol located on their middle-right side, and an expansion symbol in their center-right below the illustration. Starting around Magic 2015, the set’s 3 letter code appears in the extreme lower left corner of the card.
The set symbol in the middle right of most Magic cards has a rarity color, notating which set the card belongs to. Alpha cards have more rounded corners than other sets, while beta cards are normal-border (black-bordered) and unlimited cards are white-bordered. An expansion symbol and, more recently, a three-character abbreviation are printed on each card to identify the set it belongs to. The most recent released set is “WAR”.
