To fix an Apple Magic Mouse not working issue, follow these steps:
- Turn the Magic Mouse off and on to fix minor issues.
- Turn Bluetooth off and on to refresh the connection.
- Unpair and re-pair your Magic Mouse to reset the connection.
If you can’t connect your Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, or Magic Trackpad to your Mac, try these steps to resolve issues with your Magic accessories.
If your Magic Mouse or Magic Mouse 2 isn’t tracking properly, there might be a hair or other debris on the sensor lens. Turn the mouse over and inspect the sensor.
If macOS doesn’t recognize the mouse, reset one side that’s not clicking or reset the mouse. After updating to Monterey, the Magic Mouse will stop scrolling after the MacBook goes to “sleep”. To keep your Magic Mouse tracking smoothly, clean the sensor and find it.
If your mouse doesn’t respond at all, try turning off Bluetooth, shutting down your Mac, disconnecting the mouse, waiting for a few seconds, and reconnecting the mouse.
If your Magic Mouse is stubborn and refuses to show up in the Bluetooth settings, reset the connection by pressing and holding down the Shift + Option. If it becomes erratic, it may be due to low battery charge or a piece of lint on the optic.
Implement a macOS update in System Preferences/Settings, delete any new apps that may be causing your mouse not to function properly, and restart.
If none of these solutions work, try turning Bluetooth off and on again, unpair your Magic Mouse, and re-enable the Bluetooth.

You are a LIFESAVER!! I was about to go and spend the money on a new mouse even though I’ve had this one for 2-3 years. I had problems with it not connecting and then when I tried to remove it and re-pair it, it wouldn’t pop up at all. Lone behold, this was the exact solution I needed. I knew the mouse had a full charge but nothing made sense until this article. Thank you so much!
2:46 “Wiggle it just a little bit.” Sorry but that song just came to mind. 1) Reboot. This is always step 1. Every cycle is important on a Mac much more so than on a PC, but remember this is still just a computer. 2) Turn off Bluetooth. This is how the Mouse connects, it can get wonky sometimes. If do this on all Mac products I do not want to AirDrop to as well. 3) In Bluetooth Settings click “Forgot the device” and add it back. You can rename it here as well. 4) Connect via a lightning cable. This hard connection is the only way to bypass the Bluetooth connection. 5) Leave it it connected using the lightning cable to your device and toggle the on off a few times. This worked for me while perusal this article. 6) If your device will not hold it’s on/off button status, then you device might need to be repaired/purchase another one. 7) If you are dependent on using a mouse, have an extra wired mouse available. A simple 2 button mouse with a wheel is all you need.
oh well, I thought my little one broke my magic mouse because I let him play with it and after few tries online just gave up for few days … just recently update my mac OS Catalina, my mouse still didn’t work until I have just accidentally came across this AMAZING article which saved my life, time, days and hours spending fixing this. Thank you so much for posting this article.
You rock Michelle! I had the same issue with my magic mouse 2 since few weeks ago, today I was looking for ways to fix it to save 80$ for a new one, your article popped up as first choice in the search results and with the trick you explained I was able to get the mouse back to working again! Thank you!
Surprising that such a simple thing could lead to Mouse issues and playing with the switch can resolve it:). I have used Apple Macs for 10 years and 2 different Mices. Never faced this issue until right now. And the mouse just wouldn’t work, and I searched and landed here. Played around with the switch and voila…the problem got resolved.
OMG! Thank you SOOO much, Michelle! My “magic mouse” connection disappeared a couple weeks ago. Even the bluetooth connection couldn’t find it! And, yes, it was 46% charged just before it disappeared. I’ve been using the trackpad since then, which I’m not very good at doing. I thought it was because I’d been perusal a lot of Penn & Teller’s “Fool Us” articles, and all of that magic somehow made my mouse disappear! I had to scroll down through about 15 articles before I FINALLY found one (yours) that actually addresses the words I entered into YouTube’s search: “macbook air can’t locate mouse”. I had to use my fingernail to BARELY move the on/off button from the off position towards the on position while keeping an eye on the screen. Sure enough, the mouse icon showed up showing it was “Connected”! Sending love and light to you from north Florida, sister. 💕
Hi Michelle, I hope/pray you found employment by now. Thank You for this article. I am actually on my 2nd mouse and of course it’s out of warranty. LOL. You gave some really good advice, but luckily I plugged it in and it started charging. Before that I was getting “”not connected” after charging for 5min. The only thing I can think of for this time is that the battery was extremely dead or something. I put it in for a little longer and it was at 1%,. Wohoo! I once brought it in to an electronic fix it store. He said he couldn’t pair it with anything (a PC maybe?), but he cleaned it and it worked on my Mac again. One other thing I always do is turn the lightning plug around. Sometimes it helps. Al the best to you!
Can’t believe it actually worked literally had the same problem with the mouse and keyboard combined then I switched the power button half way on both and they both worked again… Apple really charging 1600 for faulty equipment(only have had it for a couple months barely use) thank you!!! You’re a life saver
Initially this didn’t work for me, I had to read through comments for people who had no success. So thank you so much for your great help. I saw you suggesting to press on top of the switch. I pressed on top of the little button, positioned in the middle. I kept pressing till it magically connected. Suggestion to all those pairing up for the first time, make sure you unplug your Bluetooth devices. BIG THANK YOU
This didn’t work to solve my problem unfortunately (glad it did for so many!), but what did work is connecting the mouse directly to the computer. I was able to connect the apple mouse 2 using a USB cable to the computer through an adapter. This allowed me to see how much the mouse was charged and the computer connected to it and the mouse is now working with bluetooth. I have the switch all the way up with the green showing.
Hi, This is a great vid and you have made some great points or Apple Faults ha . my magic mouse very rarely dies on power! its happened twice in 2 years . when it happened last, i plugged a standard USB mouse in to carry on using my Imac + now my magic mouse is fully charged . i have no control over it at all . it has now got a mind of its own . i have detached the USB standard mouse, restarted my machine multiple times, now i am wondering is there a conflict in drivers . my system works great with the USB mouse but not the Magic 1 . (there is nothing Magic about these Mouses but when they’re good they’re great! has anyone else had this problem? any advice would be appreciated . Thanks.
Michelle thanks so much for taking the time to do what Apple Support did not ! Just when I had given up and tossed it aside and said forget it I’ll just use my old wired mouse; I then went on YT and quickly found your article. I tried a few times and could not fix it but decided to persist and try different spots. For me it was just a bit below halfway up. It’s good people like you who make a person’s day by sharing what they’ve learned when the manufacturer won’t. You are a blessing and sure shifted my day today !!
Michelle thanks so much for taking the time to do this – 4 years ago! I was about to buy new one, finally found your astute solution. Saved the day and (found) $70 for new mouse! Very grateful; wish you well in all your endeavors. Rev21:5: “Then He who sat on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” And He said to me, “Write, for these words are true and faithful.” You were His agent! I have like new mouse; hope it works a good while longer.
Hi Michelle. I was coming on to see what I could since I had the same problem. And it worked. Then I heard you ask fir a work from home. Which is what I do. If you want, I can share with you what our business does so people can work from home. I know its has been some tears since thus was posted but I thought I would check and see.
Thanks for this information. I would have never thought of this. Mine is doing the same thing. I’ll give it a try. As far as employment goes, I have a podcast designed to help people get ideas about job hunting. It’s called “Man I just need a Job”. If you happen to listen to it please send me some feedback. I’m looking for ideas for some future episodes.
honestly thank you, my mouse wasnt working until i saw ur genius idea of connecting it to the laptop, idk why i never thought of that. i knew my mouse was charged till 100% but for some reason it still wouldn’t show up on my settings and connect to it. made me think it was dead! even though i had charged it so much. as soon as i connected it to my laptop, it was able to recognize the mouse and after i unplugged it the bluetooth and mouse started working!! thank you so much!
Thank you heaps.. The thirds option worked for me. My mouse was connecting but disconnecting after a few seconds. Nothing was working for me. I connected it with the cable, the mouse was charged and working… After about 30 seconds I took the cable off to try the mouse and it just kept on working. Problem solved. Thanks again.
“The products we design are going to be ridden in, sat upon, looked at, talked into, activated, operated, or in some way used by people individually or en masse. If the point of contact between the product and the people becomes a point of friction, then the industrial designer has failed. If, on the other hand, people are made safer, more comfortable, more eager to purchase, more efficient or just plain happier–the industrial designer has succeeded.”
I am such a ding bat I have spent the last twenty minutes trying to figure out how to change the batteries, I’ve not charged it once since receiving imouse for Christmas….ugh! smart mouse, smart key pad, thought the keyboard required to be connected at all times…this is when I wish I had a 5 year old!!!
There is actually a 4th option when these 3 do not work and generally applies to using one bluetooth mouse or keyboard amongst more than device. First, make sure your mouse (or keyboard) is not connected to another computer. You may have to go into the bluetooth menu under System Preferences on the other device and select “forget this device” or click the ‘x’ next to it to remove it from the options. Second, if this still does not work, and you have used your mouse on the device you are currently trying to connect to, perform this same action: Go to your bluetooth menu and click “forget this device” or the ‘x’ to remove it as an option. Then begin pairing and it should connect.
