How To Interpret Tarot Reversals?

Tarot card reversals offer insight into challenges or blocks in a situation and require a different approach compared to upright cards. These cards offer a deeper layer of complexity and meaning to tarot readings, which can be interpreted through symbolism, examining surrounding cards, and relying on intuition.

Reversed cards are the classic tarot cards in an upside-down position, which can be drawn and arranged in various ways depending on the context of the surrounding cards and the overall message. Some readers read reversed tarot cards with their upright meaning to simplify readings, but it is important to understand that Tarot is about intuition, skill, and understanding.

There are four simple yet powerful methods for interpreting reversed Tarot cards:

  1. Ignoring Reversed Tarot Cards: You do not have to read reversals. Instead, give the reversed card its opposite meaning, such as the 3 of Swords. A reversed card can be read multiple ways, either as the opposite of the card’s upright meaning or that the card’s upright meaning is reversed.

  2. Turning One Pile 180 degrees from top to toe, so that those upright cards will become reversed cards, and vice versa. Then put all the piles back.

  3. Reading Reversals: Reading reversals means reading the full spectrum of a tarot card when upright. This can be confusing, but it is essential for readers who feel confident in their ability to read reversals or worry that they bring negativity to a reading. By following these techniques, readers can go even deeper in their Tarot readings and gain a deeper understanding of the messages conveyed through the cards.

  • I agree about reversals being stressful for some reason. I guess because I’m learning to read and it’s hard enough learning the interpretations of like 78 cards without having to learn another reversed meaning. Plus the cards already have plenty of meaning with the number the zodiac the elements the image symbolism lol reversals are stupid to me

  • Hello nice and very informative article. But do you use reversals? . I was so surprised to read from Rachel pollacks book saying she personally does not use them most of the time and if she included reversed meanings in her books it was just because waite smith mentioned them and who was she to contradict him.
